As a hairdresser myself, when doing a set, you really need to give the entire head a vigorous brushing first to blend the curls BEFORE back combing it and styling it. It just looks better and smoother and you don’t see holes.
Would it work to just smooth out each layer of rollers? Because working with each layer before moving on to the next feels much easier than backcombing the entire thing after having brushed out the entire wig
