The silly thing being that he could have put it down on the water, then flown it back out the way that he came in. What a tragedy. RIP to both men and condolences to their family, friends and colleagues.
yeah was thinking the same thing, although maybe it's just the animation and in real life the water wasn't there or landable.
Whats bad is the mark left on this aircraft. Even though it turned out to be pilot error.
The pilot didn’t need to turn in that blind canyon. He could have simply landed on water, turned his craft around, and took off in the opposite direction. It’s especially sad to the passenger who trusted the pilot.
Yeah, a pilot with thousands of hours of flight experience and who was familiar with this canyon should have listened to some clown on the internet.
@@veryslyfox His ‘experience’ killed him. I know the dangers of flying into a blind canyon. That pilot was clueless. Apparently so are you. If I was flying I would have lived. If you followed in that inept pilot’s footsteps you would have crashed. I wonder why you are defending a pilot that made a massive blunder.
@@veryslyfox He likely turned up this canyon by mistake. And he most certainly could and should have landed straight ahead on the water. It just goes to show that even experienced pilots are human and can make mistakes.
Its the first thing I thought about. Why risk it, land if it was that much of a problem.
I know this lake well. From the entrance to Portuguese canyon, a left turn takes you through a narrow passage into the main body of the lake. That is where they were planning to go. That narrow passage to the lake body looks very similar to where Portuguese canyon narrows then dead ends at the north. The pilot likely didn't know he was flying into the canyon until he saw the end of the water and the steep hills at which point it would have been too late to land, with the only option being to attempt a U-turn. Also, that left turn is easy to miss. It looks a lot like one of the many dead end canyons.
First off, I love the animation. It is sooooo easy to see how anyone could get complacent in this situation. Let me make some observations.
1) complacency is a big problem for people with lots of experience
2) this was obviously meant to be a joy ride, going low and slow to see the sights. Another addition to the complacency factor.
3) thousands of hours of flight time doesn't mean you are not going to encounter something new. Much flight time is at altitude in a straight line, not buzzing trees in a water filled canyon.
4) if you ever get a chance to do this, look the pilot in the eye before you take off and tell him/her that you want to stay in a highly safe flight envelope, not go down and buzz the trees.
I was in the USAF for 6 years and had a chance to fly the gun door on a Blackhawk chopper twice. They strapped me into the harness. Since I was not normally on flight duty they decided to try to make me puke. They left the side door open and the gun was not in place. So it was just me and the harness. And so they begin jerking the collective up and down trying to get me to yak. I was completely unafraid of the machine breaking down but I was worried that the pilots would go too far trying to get me to barf because I don't barf. It all turned out fine on both rides but it did teach me that my simple presence had changed the safety equation for that aircraft.
So today Jim the mission is to make *the captain* puke. Go and fill the tank of a blackhawk will you.

Finally! A flight simulator that at least somewhat matches the pure quality of TheFlightChannel's video-making skills. Another great one
The only problem is MFS has problems with realism. For bigger planes, I'm going to assume he'd have to use XPlane. I understand the graphics match it, so it would be a better experience for us viewers, but in terms of making the video, he'd struggle with the handling. Also, the fact that you can't replay with different angles might affect the time. Plus, MFS has lots of buttons inside bigger planes without functional properties. Not good for the first-person reconstruction like IFR details that he added in XPlane vids. So, there are pros and cons, but depending on how you look at it MFS doesn't exactly match TFC's video style (which I'm sure we all love).

That was the pilot's mistake, attempting to stay over the lake when the aircraft could have easily climbed to safety flying out the back of the canyon. As best I can tell from my Northern California DeLorme Atlas, although the _walls_ of the canyon are steep, the gradient of the creek only rises another 100 meters in the next 1.2 miles, well within the A5's published climb rate: doc8643.com/aircraft/A5

The Rotax engine is a very popular and successful aircraft power plant. Sadly this crash was caused by pilot error.
I really appreciate you recreating that accident. I can really understand the nature of the steep hills, the planes inability to climb, and it asks the question so well: “why did he fly up those canyons?”
judging by his experience, flight hours, and certification, it sounds like he maybe was trying to show off a bit to the new employee and wasn't paying attention to his map or GPS
Or became disoriented/incapacitated for some reason and the non-pilot was left to fend for himself.
Anyone can make a mistake, hours on type is no guarantee against that.
@@jamescaley9942 As a pilot, there are certain types of mistakes that I will NEVER make. Because those things are always at the front if my mind, a permanent part of my psyche. Because I make myself stay afraid of the fatal consequences. There are no excuses in aviation, just incident reports.
Timothy Campbell And yet- you can still make a mistake. MOST accidents in General Aviation are caused by pilot error. Even the most experience professional pilots sometimes make simple mistakes.
The attitude that it ‘won’t happen to me’ because I am more careful is a primary attribution error, and is the very mentality that causes pilot error mishaps.
This aircraft was flying the same route the company took nearly all customers on. Flying low to the water the way a hundred kit Fox and carbon cub pilots do every day. This day, the pilot took what he thought was the canyon that lead to the larger area of the lake where he was planning to land the aircraft on the water... instead he turned one canyon too soon and ended up in Portuguese cove- by the time he saw he was in the wrong cove, he did not have enough water in front of him to land so he tried to climb. Realizing he couldn’t clear the surrounding hills he tried a 180, but had to cut back on power to make the bank sharper and so lost altitude as he turned. Coming out of the turn he was descending and tried to gain enough airspeed to climb out of the descent... but ran out of altitude.
Sadly, had his first instinct not been to climb, he might have been able to set it down hard on the water and run her aground before running out of wet... certainly destroying the aircraft and likely being serious injured, but at least perhaps surviving. Much faster and easier to DROP 50 feet when you only have 56kts - than to climb 700 feet...
But then, MOSt pilots who get themselves killed were killed by their first instinct.

Again I'm seeing this in the comments a lot... I'm not sure most of you are familiar with flight sims but IFR antics are going to have to require XPlane. So I don't know if he will be using MFS for bigger planes or not.

The standard training routine for this plane certification teaches doing a higher altitude overflight of your proposed landing site; if he followed their own training he would have seen that this was the wrong canyon and flew on to the correct longer one.

Here's what we learned from this plane crash so far: "When we carry out flight plans for a small plane before take off, we must not forget to insert a flight path into the aircraft's computer because it's the most important thing that every pilot must do if they want to fly over mountainous terrains. You see, before the Icon A5 took off to fly over Lake Berryessa, no flight path was carried out which resulted in the pilot who is flying not even knowing if he is flying over the canyon he expected to fly over, he then realized that he was in the wrong canyon so attempted to escape the canyon but they crashed! The lesson of this accident is when we prepare a small plane for take off, we must carry out a flight path as it's the rules for every single aviation pilot!"

Sorry but you are incorrect here. There is no need to file a flight plan if you are on a local flight in VFR conditions. The mistake here was the low altitude. He could have flown the same route at a safe altitude and everything would have been fine.
This is the second Icon crash I’ve seen. It’s being marketed as a sports vehicle, rather than a plane, so I think there’s a false sense of reality going on there..that somehow the basic rules of aviation don’t apply.

@@virginiaviola5097 I heard from a case study by the youtube channel : AVweb (really great youtube channel) that he mentioned that the Icon A5 provided a false sense of security and "invincibility" due to the AOA indicator being expressed as a revolutionary indicator and that their commecials and videos even suggested you could fly off it alone. BIG mistake imo, As a pilot of even a smaller aircraft, PPL training should be a must since it shows people who dont respect/know the laws and physics of aviation how to understand why these accidents happen and how to avoid them.

During my 59 years of flying, this was one of my rules: Before you get 1500 hours, don't ever buzz; after you get 1500 hours, don't ever buzz. (One other thing for pilots: the sky is really a very safe place, but the edge of the sky can be very dangerous.)
As in many aircraft accidents, human error is the cause. In this case, pilot error caused two men their lives. Needlessly. RIP.

This was great! You should do more General Aviation accidents in the future! Tons of them out there, and lots of good lessons to be learned by people who are in training.
When the manufacturer itself wants to position the aircraft with a recreational focus as if airplanes were too complex or complicated, that's what you get. Flying is not a joke, or a game. In the end, the pilot did exactly what the CEO wanted: he got out there and interacted with his world.
Well, that's a deceiving marketing slogan (and a fatal too); for private leisure non-pro or commercial flight I get it they would simplify things but at least build the plane with enough power to climb a f'n canyon UNDER ALMOST PERFECT WEATHER; the pilot could have attempted a water landing giving the fact they advertise the plane as aquatic too

Oh, man, I'm sorry to learn that Jon Karkow was in this crash. I only met Jon once or twice in my decades in Mojave, but he also owned a set of four tiny houses on K st that were known as the "Karkowminiums" locally. I was so wrapped up in XCOR's final days that a lot of other news at the time didn't register with me.

The decision to land is done after he sees suddenly the end of the lake (2500 feet at best) while still being at 450 feet.
I was born and raised around Berryessa/Vacaville. I'm amazed at how physically accurate this video is.
Flying into unfamiliar and familiar box canyons with low powered planes at low altitudes have killed many pilots, and actually quite a few in the CA mountains.
Bruce Gellar ( Mission Impossible creator in a C337) , Frank Tallman(famous stuntman in an Piper Apache) to name a couple. Their were complicated with low ceilings and fog, but these familiar stories , the almost always fatal 180 turn or just flying into the side of mountains are hard lessons never learned. Always sad. Awesome vid.

I know nothing about flying other than what I've seen on this awesome channel. But - this is an amphibious plane. When the pilot appeared to realize he was in trouble, I wonder why he didn't attempt to land on that lake?

9/29/1979, the Nut Tree was the first stop of my and my late wifes honeymoon. We flew there in a Piper Comanche, stayed at the Brigadoon Inn (I think that's the name.....), rode the train a few times, really enjoyed ourselves.

One of the first things I learned from playing flight sim is when your in the center of the V of two hills you HAVE to have a very powerful engine to pull yourself out. Otherwise you get trapped in the canyon and won't make it out. I feel like in this case if he would have cranked the engine and just stayed going straight at a slight upward angle he could of eventually gained enough altitude but I only know that after 100 hours of flight sim experience. Idk how much aviation experience these guys had

Simply this, your in a seaplane, land in the water and taxi out.
He couldn't determine the direction of the area he spotted to land. The co-pilot should have assisted as a spotter . Overall the issue was pilot error. He just didn't have enough altitude to correct his heading due to distance. ..

It was a long easy it had been built with the throttle directly behind him, so he couldn't get to it fast enough and he ran out of fuel. Before he left the airport maintenance tried to get him to refill his tanks, but he refused. That seems so ridiculous that he would do that, but that's the main reason many pilots die, they don't ever think it can happen to me
Thanks for the help with the aircraft, my uncle, who is a flight instructor and also trained me, said that they are some of the most dangerous aircraft to fly. This is due to cramped cockpit, and its not faa certified.
I go to Lake Berryessa all the time and when I saw this I was shocked. I never knew there was a plane crash here. It's a weird feeling seeing a video made on my local area

I wonder why he didn't try to land on the water instead of trying to climb out. Seems like he could have landed on the water, turned around, and then take off again the opposite direction.

Yeah that seems like the obvious thing. Also he overshot the turn. He could could have lined up with the water right before the crash. At least that’s how it looks to a non pilot.

Thankyou for posting this. I have always been curious about the situation in which a top test pilot could go so wrong.
A sad experience that must be learned from. To me the Icon A5 is a true sea plan and also more of a flat flyer and is not a plane for fast maneuvers so plan ahead and know your terrain and your planes limitations. RIP.

World be great if that thing had some 10000ft/min climb performance... well, maybe not that much, but it seems to me that this a/c has inadequate climb performance for its designed to be used for.
Idk why when using msfs2020 flying smaller planes like they are so easy to maneuver and thats not realistic i mean yeah small planes can maneuver better than big planes but they are so fragile

An experienced pilot showing off, is the impression I'm left with. He over-estimated his own abilities and left investigators, and undoubtedly the loved one's of both pilot and passenger, as to WTF went wrong.
X X nonsense. Experience is merely a measure of the amount of flying a person has undergone coupled with the number of different situations and planes he’s been in. An experienced pilot could become reckless OR he could learn to be methodical, detail oriented and prone to planning his flights. Merging experience and danger is just stupid.

@@breeknow AOPA has a writer that made the very same point... the ICON A5 has a problem with killing experienced pilots, because the aircraft handles so well that they forget that it's bleeding close to it's limits while handling *that well*. Airspeed low, need just a little more power... whoops, you were already getting 95% and now you're f*cked because you boxed yourself in a corner with no exit.
Long story short, pilots used to trusting other airplanes in ways that you can't trust this one, finding themselves caught in their own trap.
Okay, I give up. It is now pretty much impossible for me to tell what is simulated and what isn't. Even the water looks real! Bravo TFC! Nice job!

Not sure why, but I really am fascinated by these videos, particularly how they are made. It would be great if you would produce a "making of...." video where you show the process that you go through to put one of these videos together.
Flight simulator programmes are freely available to buy... all you have to is get good at using it them simulate the characteristics of the various crashes using all available details.. Lol sounds easy but I'm guessing it's not.

Wow the new flight simulator makes the videos look insane. It gives a whole new feeling to the crashes.
The simulation showed where in the canyon the pilot initiated the left turn, but it didn't show his altitude at that point. A witness stated the plane had climbed to about 100 ft above ground in the canyon. If we took that to mean 100 ft above the lake water, that would place the pilot to be around 600 ft AMSL when he started the turn. If the pilot had just kept flying ahead (north) instead of turning, he would have about 1.5 miles to fly and climb, before reaching an east-west ridge of about 1200 ft. If he had cleared that ridge, he would have been in the clear. So, according to NTSB, an A5 with 2 adult male pilots onboard, could not climb 600 ft in 1.5 miles.
That's what I'm saying. It looked like he cleared it in the sim easy, is the actual performance of the plane that much lower in real life?
Pretty scary when their own chief pilot can’t fly the airplane. I have a seaplane rating and one of the first rules they teach you don’t go where you can’t get out.

My brother in law has flown as a bush pilot in Alaska and all over the western U.S. Years ago I started lessons with him but quit.
I still remember him saying, know where you are going and if you're not sure you can get out, don't go in.

I don't know who you are, but I can confidently say this pilot was more experienced than you, period. Sometimes highly experienced pilots make mistakes. Do you really think this pilot didn't know to avoid flying into canyons you can't fly out of? The mistake wasn't knowing that, it was making a wrong turn. Show some respect.

Basically, he got boxed in. It's not as unusual as it seems. You fly into a confined space you can't fly out of, be it a canyon, between buildings or even inside a meteor crater (in Arizona). This pilot might have had a better chance if he'd simply ditched.

I think by making a real impact on the world they literally meant it - make an impact into the world, by crashing into it.
Nokil Hotrun Well to be fair, that was my joke-the company founder didn’t actually say anything about having an “impact”. That was one of the parts I made up as a way to (darkly) parody what he said. But the fact my joke/parody version seems like something the company really might have said is mildly terrifying, in terms of how seriously they take aviation safety in creating their aircraft, marketing it, training people to fly it, etc.
I don't know how that has anything to do with the crash... it was pilot error, the vehicle itself was not at fault at all.
Shannon McCrary I’m not saying it does; at least not directly. I just thought that the founder’s quote (which he said when the aircraft was introduced) suggested a bit of apathy toward safe aviation. If you release an airplane to compete in the same market as ATVs and motorcycle, rather than with other airplanes, it shouldn’t come as a shock when people fly it like an ATV. (I believe the late Hall-of-Fame MLB pitcher Roy Halladay was also flying an Icon pretty recklessly in his fatal crash, although he was also under the influence of drugs at the time.)
They used the word “interact” with your world. As in impact at high enough speed to kill the occupants.

RIP they were talented designers / engineers / pilots. I really love that plane in the game. It looks so futuristic and can land in water. Can cruise slowly for scenic fly-bys.

was a weird story. those things cant fly at at that altitude nor at 300 mph. the only thing that can do that is the Dubai rocket man, and I doubt it was him.
He probably has to crash first....

Feel for the passenger, he would have realised they were in trouble some time before the crash. Relying on others to do their job can be a bitch sometimes. Oh and that aircraft needs more power.
First thing came to mind as an aviation engineer .... This type of A/C needs more then 150 hp at least in order to get out of troubles at lower altitudes.....

Yeah ..could use a bit more power but that had zero to do with these deaths .. purposely flying into a box canyon at low level that the plane can't climb out of is always avoidable ... also the rocket propelled chute can make a save at incredibly low altitude .. Numerous decisions not to die were not made

Icon pilots need to realize they're not flying an a high performance stunt plane. It may look sleek and quick but its just a basic LSA at heart.

@tinwoods You don't need to be flying at an extremely low altitude in order to show everything a plane can do. He could fly just a few meters higher and there would be no problem, the results would be the same. And by the way, I don't know about you, but I already have sat in a real plane's pilot seat.
@@capelli8275 This is a sports plane. Of course if you were doing a recognition flight on a 737 for example you wouldn't need to fly that low. However, this is a sports vehicle and it is quote "meant to connect you with the world", so the company wanted to show it was just that - a car that hovers.
@@nokilhot3550 Okay but there wasn't anything wrong with the plane. Can you fly that low? Of course, you can! Is it recommended to fly that low in a CANYON that you don't 100% know? Probably not, that's what I'm trying to say. If the pilot knew that he wasn't 100% sure that he was in the right canyon, he should have climbed just a little bit more, and everyone would be safe.
