Building a Large Garage Final: We are Done

  • In the final video for building a large garage, we install cedar 6x6 knee braces on our cedar porch. I sure hope we have the opportunity to come back when concrete is poured and show you all how it ended up. I am overly happy with how this project turned out for our client. Attic insulation to happen at a later date once electrical is completed, garage doors will be coming soon, and gutters to be installed shortly after.
I know everyone would love to see a lot more of the finishing details, but we don't typically contract that work. I will say however you should subscribe to the channel because we will be performing a bunch of finishing work this year on some awesome projects. I plan on coming back to this site at some point so stay tuned.
If you have an interest in purchasing a set of building plans for this project follow the link below. It is almost ready to go and I will send you an email as soon as possible. It covers a ton of details for this project, or if you are looking to build anything similar.

Kyle, just a thought, how about trying black coil stock above the doors. If it doesn't clean up the oil can effect then go back to the galvanized color. Have Greg hold up a piece on the short section for a test look. Love your buildings.

Can you glue that stuff down above the doors? Run OSB or something then run liquid nail across it with 1/8” square trowel similar to sheet vinyl? Maybe to press it put 3/4” OSB over it and screw it down until the adhesive is set up? Lay screw holes out nicely on OSB so you can put your regular screws in the holes that it leaves in the aluminum. That’s how I would do it. You’d still have screws showing but as long as you got the glue down super uniform it might take some wrinkles out. Just some thoughts from an monday morning arm chair master builder :-) as for the building in general, colors, the porch etc. I think it’s the best one you’ve done yet. Looks VERY good!

Kyle, Get you a seam roller the brake company makes so you can put a small seam ( several choices) in the flat coil stock above the garage doors. It would add some strength and take away alot of oil canning. But, you may have already thought of that.

    Personal preferences:
    1. I really like the outside colors, size, and proportions.
    2. Knee braces finished it off.
    3. The roof needs snow stoppers to prevent snow from falling where you do not want it to fall.
    4. The inside colors look bad from here, maybe not in person.
    5. If I was the customer, the oil canning would be absolutely unacceptable on a new building of that size, quality, and expense.
    6. If I was the builder, I would not walk away from that oil canning leaving that as my work quality.
    Best wishes.

Great idea. Also could add in some roll-formed striations, or stiffening ribs, to the panels to reduce the oil canning effect. This may also provide some forgiveness for material expansion. Of course the other thing to watch out for is over driving fasteners. Love this channel and the attention to detail on his builds!

Color choices are of course personal however, the interior colors are not all that wise. The "Galvanized" panels don't look good at all while the dark ceiling and wainscoting are too dark for interior lighting needs. Maybe when the concrete is in things may brighten up as long as they didn't choose a dark tinted concrete color. Love the design of it though. Nice work and detail finishing.
