Such a nice day, relaxing "couch walk" with some hot coffee. It's so nice seeing the blue skies and some greenery in the city meanwhile here in Finland it's been snow and gray skies for weeks, super lucky to get one or two days of sunshine every now and then.
I enjoyed this video. When my husband and I visited Tokyo, we took a walk one morning on our own. We discovered that without our son acting as "tour guide" we took the time to really see what was around us and notice what people were doing instead of blindly following. We walked through a park and saw dog walkers, kindergarten children, people headed to work, a group of very fit elderly people playing a sport I'm not familiar with, and the biggest black birds I've ever seen just to mention a few. I recommend taking time away from the touristy stuff to really see Japan.
So bummed I missed this one John. You know how much I love your walking tours. Especially when you're in Akihabara and touring with PVG. Glad I got to watch the replay. And great to hear you watched Game of Thrones. I watched the entire season... twice! Lol. Totally love it! Great livestream my friend!
What i like about your lives is : we walk together and and you talk and we can say something sometimes in the chat ... It feels like we are walking there too even if we feel it only about a 20% of the real feeling but it's anough to make us happy again. Thanks a lot.
1:17:50 - I remember walking here so fast as I was trying to complete my own itinerary. Quite a long walk. For that whole week, I lost about 5 kilos I think, ahahaha! I miss Tokyo, I miss Japan. Ughhh.. can't wait to get back.
Enjoyed your walk to Shinjuku partly with PvG. What a setup meeting at the bottom of the escalator. Both the raspberry and melon pan looked good and you walked it off all the way. Yasukuni is sacred for the living (many weddings) and the dead (many war veterans). I purchased a small size keg shaped can a few years ago as a kit you can make beer at home but the taste was more foam than beer. Fortunately or unfortunately, I don't remember the brand name. Great weather on your walk. Thanks for the stream John. Cheers to Kanae and Rio.
In 2019 I stayed my first ever week in Japan in Akebonobashi and what a great location to get accustomed to Japan, almost like a hidden secret right next to Shinjuku. It's very quiet, not a lot of people and you get that small local neighborhood vibe but you are still very close to most of the major (tourist) locations in western side of central Tokyo, with quick access to eastern side as well. So happy that at the last minute we decided not to go to one of the well-known Shinjuku hotels.
TYVM! while in Shinjuku next month i was originally thinking of taking the Chuo or Shinjuku line, or maybe go around the JR Yamanote to Akihabara. but now i want to walk it! what a cool and timely video you have created for us!
This was a really nice stream, beautiful day and I was surprised how much you can see in this walk. Looking forward to the next stream and have a great New Year JD!
Really nice Walk John, good that you show people that it is "easily" possible to walk around most places in Tokyo. I usually also do walks like Akihabara to Ueno to Asakusa or Harajuku to shibuya or nakano to mitaka also Ikebukuro to Shinjuku isn't to bad Sometimes its really fun. I often search Maps to find small parks and such and walk from park to park for hours sometimes.
Love to see the place where me& my husband stayed in shjinjuku in sanchome twice total of 6 weeks....thanks john ...Best regards from Copenhagen Danmark
Really loved this stream! I try to walk everywhere I go in Tokyo as much as possible if the weather allows 😊 you find so many things you wouldn’t find otherwise, its safe and easy, and I work up an appetite more frequently with all of the walking! Definitely want to eat as much as possible while in Tokyo haha!
One time, we've walked from Ikebukuro going to Shinjuku and back. Because it's our first time doing it, it took us 2hrs one way walking but it was FUN! If the pandemic is over and we can visit Tokyo we will do it again.
I've stayed in Shinjuku twice. On my first trip to Japan I stayed in the Washington Hotel. Nice place, good location. In 2018 I stayed in an AirBnB a few hundred meters north of the station. Very convenient.
GoT starts failing from season 6, but 7, 8 killed the franchise IMO. Your walking around tours are timeless and very appreciated by comparison 😋 thanks John and Peter. We stayed in Shinjuku in accommodation along the Shinjuku Goen fence near Tsukemen Gonokami Seisakusho つけ麺 五ノ神製作所, mornings smelt like we were staying in a forest.
Every time you spoke about your walking shoes, I kept singing to myself "these boots were made for walking, and that's just what I'll do. One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you" xD
Loved this stream! A walk I would definitely do, so much to see. Quite far though, I would schedule a few craft beer stops 😃 I stayed in an Airbnb in Nishi Shinjuku, and also in Shin Okubu. Easily walkable after last train, and close to the action.
John that was the best line you said. I don’t know’ I’m a east coast guy. I try to explain that all the time to the Aussies when they mention certain American food chains. New York City stand up!!! Hahahaha
It is plus 8 degrees Celsius in Tokyo currently as I watch this 3 hours after the live stream, and I laugh when Peter said his hand is cold because he had to hold his empty can. Well, hold my broth guys, the current temperature in Calgary is -33 C!!!!
This is a rather old post and I am reviewing posts that cover areas I will be visiting. 1) I believe in your assessment of your gift giving. In my opinion, it seems that giving a gift that is practical is well received by most in Japan. Specific to "bling" it's not a big thing. An acquaintance perhaps said it best when I mentioned how one of my girlfriends who lives in Hawaii and went to college in Japan dressed and adorned herself...she called it "simple elagance". Seems more simple and quality oriented than that being outlandish. I, myself am a third generation Japanese-American and upbringing was that of my nisei parents and the same held true. 2) Walking versus taking trains, subways or bus. I love to walk and believe that you miss so much by going simple from point "A" to point "B". When I travel I enjoy laying out Point A and B but then take side trips. Hence, I will probably do same as I revisit Japan. Spending the first part of the day visiting points of interest and the rest of day walking back to the hotel might be the best part of the day...then take a nap!😻
Thanks for sharing! Can you rent a bicycle anywhere in order to cover more ground? We will only have 4 days there, and I want to see as much as possible. Also, how is the weather in June? Thanks for any answers, and love from Florida USA 🇺🇸 ❤️ 💕
The leaf that you guys failed to identify was nothing other then the well known Plane Tree ! so typical of London,Paris, Vienna,. Amsterdam,.....and Saigon and Tokyo, for that matter. A self-reproducing hybrid of the Sycamore and the Asian Plane tree.
I've done some long distance walking in Spain, on the Camino-de-Santiago. I did 20-26 miles a day for 14 days (6-7 hours per day) . It obviously depends on your fitness to walk for 24 hours, you need the breaks so it's not like you can run like Forest and not stop :) I would say you could easily do 100km in 24 hours if you took a break every 3 hours and maybe a couple of power naps for 20-30mins. Tokyo is really quite nice and flat for walking. Sounds like great fun. I'm in! When do we start? :)
When I had my iPhone 15 Pro Max delivered recently Apple said signature required but my DHL delivery driver just signed it themself and left it in a box next to my back door, even after requesting depot pickup.
I don't get all that "Tokyo is not that big". Sure from Akiba to Shinjuku it's a "short" walk. But for example from Tokyo Station to the Ghibli Museum it's >20km. In that sense you could also say New York City is not that big, because you can walk from Downtown to Central Park in less than 2hrs.
I don’t think Manhattan is bigger than central Tokyo. For both, it depends on which direction you walk. For Manhattan. If you walk east to west, it is very narrow, but north to south it’s about 11 km. Central Tokyo is almost square.
Akihabara to Shinjuku is across the central part of the city. BATTERY PARK to APPOLO THEATER, roughly 8-9 miles might be for Tokyo - Asakusa to Shibuya - the best equivalent to that, roughly the same distance. You’re right in direction 🎶
Is it just me or was John interrupting the other guy when he was trying to talk about his podcast? Lol immediate dodge to some authentic Chinese thing 😅
John so sorry for you phone lost ... I do have a question .. why did they not activate the phone and them track it or the police could track it !!! ??? Seem simple !! If they cant activate it ... they will through it away .. Not good ... sorry !!
If you’re serious about walking, my friend Tyler walked Japan from south to north for a girl. Took him 6mo. Documentary about it is called Kintaro Walks Japan. After that he won the Amazing Race, in part by exploiting his Japanese skills in Shibuya as a bike messenger. You guys would definitely get along.
I am a Android person, and this video is an advert to why not to purchase Apple products, if they did the right thing and replaced it, people would think better of them.... I love my Moto G Stylus
Indeed! The worlds richest company has the worlds worst customer service and post-sales care. Apple Japan just wants to take your money. Once they got it, they ship it with the cheapest option without insurance if any kind. That is so wrong on so many levels.
You really need to try the kumamon vanilla milk from that one special vending mashine at the tracks, its very rare and super delicious Also that 720p stuff ... if I didn't missunderstood you could use the mobile version of OBS to do an HD livestream. On Discord you said you need extra Harware which I could understand you wouldn't want to carry around but maybe this is "new" or I got it wrong because it didn't sound like you need more then your phone and the OBS App

Nice to see such "special friends" hanging out
Brilliant live stream John ( and PVG). All the best to you, Kanae and Leo for 2022 !!
Aloha John & Peter! Beautiful day! Thank you for taking us along! Akemashite Omedeto!
Did this walk a few times when I stayed in Shin-Okubo, north Shinjuku. Really nice walk through the City. Thanks for the memories JD & PvG :)
i like how trying to make the light before it turns red is like a game and gives you a reason to jog during this long walk!!!
1:17:50 - I remember walking here so fast as I was trying to complete my own itinerary. Quite a long walk. For that whole week, I lost about 5 kilos I think, ahahaha! I miss Tokyo, I miss Japan. Ughhh.. can't wait to get back.
Of all the people you shoot with PVG is the best. I enjoy your interactions...much fun.
Oh, tap the bottom of your container before you open them.
I’ve known him the longest 😂 so it’s easy to know what it’s probably thinking or how he may respond hehehe

Happy new year .it was nice traveling with you again.
Great day for a walk, we did some nice walks when we were in Tokyo, Akihabara to Asakusa certainly cleared out the cob webs.
It's a fantastic format! I love it! 😍Do more walks like this 😃
TYVM! while in Shinjuku next month i was originally thinking of taking the Chuo or Shinjuku line, or maybe go around the JR Yamanote to Akihabara. but now i want to walk it! what a cool and timely video you have created for us!
Love this! Thank you John!!!
This was a really nice stream, beautiful day and I was surprised how much you can see in this walk. Looking forward to the next stream and have a great New Year JD!
Visited Fukuyama in 2019 on one of my musha shugyo. Visited Musashi's Meiso Ishi down behind the castle.
Merry Christmas John and PVG. and to your families as well

I will walk this trip next month, maybe to Ginza also. But the 24 hour walking..maybe, but for a cause.
Thank you for this show, it help me to familiar with JR station and the department store, Shinjuku station is quite over whelming,
Love your work 👍

The skater haircut you remember at 1:17:20 was called the "McSqeeb" - think Tony Hawk in The Search for Animal Chin movie lol
