I’ve used the GoldFaber line for a couple of years now and I have loved them. I have not noticed any breaking or crumbling (although I’m not a reviewer of pencils!), and open stock is handy. I would gladly buy a larger set if they offered it, but I sometimes appreciate the fewer options and less space requirements of the 48. I have the bigger sets in other lines so this is a nice complement. Thank you for your thoughtful review.

I have both sets. Both are fabulous. Gold Faber feels like a creamier Prismacolor! Faber Castell needs to make a 120 set of Gold Faber.

On another note: I really don't have an issue picking my colors when coloring a picture, occasionally I will use my color wheel, but I mostly just pick my colors to match what I'm coloring. I don't use any color pickers or color guides. They are cool, don't get me wrong, but I don't stress when picking colors, that's just me.

Me too! I don't have much trouble remembering color complements, so I've never felt the need to keep a color wheel.

I'm happy that I'm not the only one who has trouble reading the Polychromos! I thought it was just that I have a very bright overhead fluorescent lamp over my work area.

I have both, the difference the polychromos are for professionals and the Goldfabre are for serious students. I have used the Goldfaber more often. Simply because I am more interested at this time. Also even though there are only 48 of them they are a serious pencil and a lot cheaper than the polychromos.

147 Light Blue and 139 Light Violet were both discontinued from the Polychromos. If you are lucky, once in a blue moon, you can find them on Ebay for anywhere from $8 to $16 a pencil. That is not including shipping.

I own both Faber Castel Gold Fabers and their oil pastels. In both cases all that is on the pencil/pastel label is the number. The color name is listed in the brochure included in the tin/box

  • @danajordan8774
    @danajordan8774 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Not having color names isn't really a deal breaker for me, but I must say that I prefer colored pencils to have color names along with numbers. I have both sets (full sets, yes I have FSS as well!) I love Polychromos, the Goldfabers are ok. I'm also a Prismacolor girl, I always go back to Prismas, but my second favorite is the Polychromos.

I think Goldfaber are awesome pencils. I wish they had more neutrals in the line, but since they do really well combined with Polychromos, I just add the neutrals I need that way. The only thing that bothers me about the Goldfaber is that they are fairly skinny, I am not a fan of that. But other than that, wow, amazing pencils for the price, definitely one of my favorites. And I also enever had this issue with the tips crumbling. Now I must say though that I am very light handed, so maybe that's why. But overall, I love them, I have all their colors (not a hard thing to do when there are only 48...), and I will defnitely buy them again once they are used up.

A much safer but more costly alternative to turpentine and OMS for blending colored pencils is Oil of Spike Lavender.
It has the distinct advantage of having a pleasant lavender scent, and works just as well, if not better, as turpentine (which itself is superior to OMS, at least for thinning oil paint) without the chronic health effects.

The German Faber - Castell homepage offers colour charts for download (the international one might as well) and there's colour names in that for anyone who needs a name to go with their pencils ;). They just don't put them on the pencils, German words are too long for that anyway 😂

I have a question...arent oil base polychromos use for layering and the goldfaber are wax base and used for blending? Wouldnt be better to have goldfaber vs prisma? Since they are both wax base?

Hi first I would like to tell you that I am a cosmologists by trade. One of the things we had to learn was law of color. When coloring hair. When you mix complimentary colors they make a neutral color brown. The complimentary colors compliment when they are side by side. Have you ever noticed school colors a lot of times a complimentary colors. LSU is purple and gold. UF is orange and blue. Christmas red and green. And so on. I hope this helps you.

Actually...i had just started my polychromos collection and they did pack them in bubble wrap. The second installment was not, and half the leads were cracked, broken, or simply sheared off. I was kind of upset but figured i should suck it up. That didn't fly, so I trusted my gut and called customer service. Well...shout out to db!! I did what they asked, lined them up and sent them pictures. They replaced the entire order. That blew my mind as i was on a budget, and at $2 a pop, I was piece-mealing my stash. Took a couple of months, and no fancy tin, but the are all in place. I totally get ocd-frantic when I 'lose' one. One i actually assumed I had but nope, so I drove to Texas Art Supply in Houston where I buy them bespoke, (but none of the Albrecht Durer. Those too are the bomb! They're this year's Christmas indulgence....).

Faber Castell pencils would be cousins in different lines. All Polychromos would be in one family, all Goldfabers would be in another family. But the are related because they are all Faber Castells.
I would not buy a pencil set if the names were not on the pencil. That is the down side of my Markarts.

It is spelled F-A-B-E-R because it is a german name and we do not use the english spelling so NEVER say FAEBER when it is called FABER!
