Owned one new back in 2000 and had loads since then, including hatches, coupés, Scenics and cabriolets. They’re great cars and are reliable cars. Coil packs can cause problems, but have been improved over the years. Generally, if changing a coil pack, they should all be replaced, as should plugs. Uneven idle will be throttle body. Although the same engine, the 1.4 16v is more likely to snap the timing belt than the 1.6 16v. Other issues are non-starting due to crank sensors giving up but easy to change and driveshaft outer boots failing for fun. The oil leak from the top end is probably due to poorly fitted cam seals after a belt change -or even worse, someone has reused the ones they prised out to lock the cams during the belt change. On the Fidji (pronounced as in the country) that part leather is real leather! I’ve had every mark of the the Megane and these 1999-2002 models and the Mk3 diesel Coupes are by far the best.

Had 3 years of cheap trouble free motoring and it was still going strong when I sold it and bought another cavalier for £275 which I also had for 2 years before it was stolen. With an Mot and any simple stuff done its £995 all day long anyone wanting a banger will try get a couple of years out if it.
Had one as a short term replacement after my golf was stolen sourced from a family member who was trading it in, it was OK but suspension parts needed plenty of maintenance to keep it running.

The part with the tape on under the bonnet isn’t an injector it’s a pencil coil pack. They are notorious on those engines for causing running problems.

Most common thing on these is the clutch.....they are the same as the 1.4 and not strong enough. Otherwise they are nippy and reliable cars.

Have one of these with 193k miles on it, same 1.6 16v engine. Off the road for now but i bet it'll do another 193k given proper maintenance. Good cars from my experience, as long as rust doesn't get them. Fidji is the top of the line model

Coil packs are probably playing up. i had a silver one same model same engine similar miles except much better paint. They suffer coils and its coil per cylinder. Any vibration could be from a worn gearbox mount they suffer them badly but once its done its like a new car. When replacing coils replace all sparks too. However fuel consumption is 40mpg easily, drives ok but really other than coils they are reliable cars.

Yep, I concur with all this. They get a bit shabby with age, but coil packs and I’ve had to change a few crank sensors. We still have one of these in the family, it’s bullet proof and simple to work on

I imagine the 1.6 is less gutless than the 1.4, which in Renault 11 and 19 had a horrible flat spot just when you needed more power!
I forgot they gave them those daft moustaches on the grille! Why!
How many Meganes are left! You"ll have to vlog the journey (to Rustival ) if you do!

MOT it, these are the last of the DIY maintain generation Renaults. enough electronics to run and be safe, not enough to be complicated. These are GEMS. if you say it drives beautifully, can there really be that much wrong with it? if i wasnt based in essex, id come and look and probably buy it!

As you mentioned Rustival and it being the kind of car Hubnut would run ... I'd suggest getting it through an mot and offering it to little miss Hubnut as a learner car (so Chemmy is not put at risk - Carly would be horrified if her daughter damaged her car!)
Isn't it worth more than £95 as scrap?

mk1 meganes like going through coil packs if left sitting, the recirc valve behind the dash likes making a racket on startup and they suffer with tdc sensors causing no starts (cheap on ebay sub £10 and about 10 mins to fit - i replaced them for peace on mind when i bought mine). i have had 3 of them including 2 convertibles

I sold 2 of these in the last year. £1495 and £1595. Sold one on Monday coincidently. But had 56k and no advisories.
Also mine needed a parcel shelf. Only one i could find was £100 on eBay.
Think the cats might be worth something on those aswell.
