Considering the book was finished before the sequel...I cant help but wonder how much this novelization had on the story of Mother 2 / Earthbound?
Lloyd having a father kind of translating to Doctor Andonuts seems like it could have been inspiration from the book!
Woah, that's a really good point! Not only is Dr. Andonuts a brilliant scientist/engineer who eventually gets roped into working for the enemy, but he's also estranged from and has awkward/poor interactions with his genious son when they reunite! In particular, Dr. Distorto thinking Lloyd is a coward reminds me of Andonuts calling Jeff a "wuss" if you say no to his question about being ready to travel back to the past. Thanks for that!
I found out about Mother through this channel, I live in Zimbabwe and Earthbound wasn't released here so thank you my brother

I love the Mother Novel for shedding light on the characters' personalities!
I agree, everything is elaborated on in this novel in creative ways (including the main characters' backgrounds and backstories)! Ninten/Ken is not at all what I pictured he'd be like, but it makes for a more interesting read--especially since it sets him further apart from Ness and his more "expected" portrayal in the second book 😁
Idk I think the “Mother Encyclopedia” did a better job.

While I wasn't the biggest fan of the Novel's interpretations on some characters (ok, ok, I didn't really like Ken) the Mother 1 novel was an amazing read, everyone who played the game should read it and see it's interesting interpretations on the game's plot (even it's deviations are pretty interesting)... 2's novel is just as much a required read IMO, it has probably my favorite interpretation of Porky, sadly a Mother 3 novel never happened, it would be interesting to see how it would explain stuff considering that the Mother 2 novel ending is pretty much completely different
I'm with you there, I think every fan of the game should at least try to read these books, and see if it's for them! I didn't like Ken's personality much here either, but it made for some interesting scenarios and he does have some good moments. I suppose it's nice how different he is from Ness as well. As for the second book, I really love novel Porky's character too! I have a theory about the ending (which I'll talk about in the next part of course) that could make MOTHER 3 possible in that universe...
It is sad Kumi never wrote a third book, but she has said before that if it ever existed, she would've really focused in on Claus' side of the story, which is a great idea.

After decades of only having a vague idea of MOTHER/Earthbound, not having any exposure to it other than its presence in Smash Bros., your essays on the series pretty much got me hooked. The story, the characters-- no wonder it's so beloved. Only downside is understanding the pain and suffering MOTHER fans go through in never getting new games/reboots/even a localization for the third game, LOL

I did not have any other exposure to this series either until I was nearly an adult, and became hooked instantly--enough to make these video essays, of course 😅--so it means a lot to hear that they themselves inspired you to become a fan! I hear you lol, MOTHER enthusiasts have had to learn to live with the drought (from MOTHER 64 finally releasing as MOTHER 3 but not in the west, to EarthBound Beginnings coming out 25 years later haha). It is a great time to be a fan nowadays, though! I will keep it up, thanks so much again.
Oh my friend, you should look into playing Earthbound and Mother 3 in some way, they are 100% worth your time.
@@Infindox I don't know where I'd be today if I hadn't played these games! Even though I experienced them for the first time more than a decade after their initial release, they clicked with me more than anything else ever had 😅 after I finished EarthBound, I definitely had the thought of "well this is my life now". Anyway, my point is yes I agree--go play these games for yourself if you haven't!
Oh it's not at all painful, I love the hell out of 2 and 3 but I'm actually very glad they've been left in the past and not milked to death with each sequel being more soulless and empty

That'd be really cool. The sprite changes should be easy enough to implement, and there wouldn't really need to be any new locations (just tweaked existing ones)! To save space as well, areas left unexplored in the novel could be cut, like the underground section of Magicant.

I just finished the book and yes Lloyd is the best character. Smart, kind, and comic relief all in one. He is best boy hands down.

It wasn't available in English until just this past December! Nyaasu Nekoban did a fan-translation for both MOTHER 1 & 2. I recommend both, but I've heard that some fans dislike the author's take on the games' events 😅

The novel is such a trip. One of the most bizarre things I have read yet it's so fun and has had me laughing really hard at some point
Just finished the mother 1 novel and I thought it was interesting how characters are kinda hard set with what psi they have as a way to limit the characters. Imagine how off the rails it would go if Noel just taught them how to teleport like in game
That's a great point--I think I like that for the novel, it gives PSI more mystique and helps keep everything in check, as you mentioned!
The heroes unleashing their powers only when they have to (since they're so mentally & physically taxing) was a good call, too.

read the whole novel and it was really good might prefer it over the mother 2 novel
anyways here are my thoughts
i really liked ken(ninten) he was annoying but the good kind off annoying the type you laught at especially when he started getting really angry this might be my bias but i seeing the same happy go lucky nice boy gets kind off old so i really liked how different he was from ness and to be honest if i were to be in his position i prabably act the same way he does so it was easy for me to put myself in his shoes
and the charecter develoment while minor was nice
ana was also really good being able to see her thoughts kept me invested same thing for Lloyd he was an interesting and a good relief charecter when ken started to take the spotlight i dont have much to say for these 2 same thing goes for teddy they are just realy good
noel was also a nice addition and good excuss on why they couldnt just teleport to the mt itoi
seeing giugue get a happy ending was also nice the poor guy had the worst luck imaginable in the game and i like how they added giugue actual mother in the novel it was a nice suprise and in general i liked how they gave george an actual good reason to study for psi and not just for himself ,maria doesnt change from what i remember but i dont mind
the lake scene or whatever you wanna call it in mount itoi was a highlight and i vastly prefer it over the dance scene cause that one just came out off nowhere and the lake scene also showed some off kens reediming gualitys
i say it again but i am glad itoi let saori kumi put her own vision in the mother universe it just adds a lot off variety and the more mother content the better and also my thanks to nyaasu for the effort of translating this i doubt it was a fun experience lol

Dark aspects of the Earthbound manual
I read this novel during my commute to college and it was a lot of fun! Now that I think about it, maybe the last lines refer to Ana hitting puberty? The cherry blossoms blooming at the foot of the mountain could either be a metaphor for pubic hair or menstruation. In any case, that is indeed a weird way to the end the story.
I'm also saddened by the problematic (omitted) line about Ana shuddering at the sight of a trans woman, I know it's not unexpected for a deeply religious anti-rock&roll girl to react this way, but it left a sour taste in my mouth after a really wonderful journey. Hopefully I'm not reading too much into that.
Now onto the next Mother novelization! Gotta prepare for your next video.
I think that's a good way to have interpereted the last line, with the blooming cherry blossoms symbolizing menstration (reminds me of Disney/Pixar's "Turning Red"). Apparently cherry blossoms have many meanings and can be a symbol of birth in Japan, though I would like to ask someone who actually lives there what they think 😅 I'm with you there on that problematic line, I'm very glad Nyaasu removed it! I think you're right about her reacting that way, having grown up in a deeply religious household. She has also been incredibly sheltered her entire life, so I'm sure it was just a surprsing new thing for her. Being at the Live House made her realize that Rock and Roll isn't at all what she thought it was, and she even began liking it so I don't doubt that in time she'll come around and accept all types of people.

@@alwaysangry2232 Oh, I also know that, it could very well be a product of its time with no other nuance. Doesn't change the fact that it's a sad reminder of such a way of thinking that still exists to this day.
Mother 1 actually has my favorite atmosphere and vibe in the series, so I'm a little meh on some changes here. But they're super interesting changes regardless

That's a good point, so maybe! She could wind up with Ken, but I think it'd be a while after the book ends. The three of them go on another adventure by themselves, so there's plenty of time for them to bond, and for Ken to grow up 😅

I didn’t know there was a novel. Interesting.
It is a very interesting, unexpected read. I'd recommend it as a companion to the original--it's a mostly faithful adaptation with some wild deviations and twists.
I know literally nothing about these novels so this is gonna be sick
Get ready for a wild ride 😅 I've read this book twice now--it's surprisingly more faithful to the game than I expected (in that it chronologically follows the original plot), but when it eleborates/deviates it gets crazy lol
Things ive liked:
-giegue's mother saving the planet from a comet (may explain the hate for humanity)
-giegue stealling all mothers because maria was lost
-ana getting pregnant
... I really should've had something like this when I was doing what I'm doing now.

@@ThaneGaming I've been... developing? Writing? A Mother animated series for about the past 2 years, development starting about 4 years ago.
I remember finding out about the book, and so the series is a pseudo adaptation of the book. I will say that it was a smart idea for the author to start at Ana since that's about the point any semblance of a story starts gamewise.
I have a problem reading fiction, and I don't believe I was picking up on things that well.
Though, honestly, I think it's fun that it's more a pseudo adaptation over a straight one since the whole Rosewater Mansion bit got a mysterious and ambiguous backstory alongside a mouse and a ghost that Lloyd interacts with. I did still retain the marriage moment, even if some things got lost with my interpretations of how everything played out.
I think the fun thing is that it's becoming more of Lloyd's story since I'm playing with Ninten differently.
Very strange how Ninten (or Ken in this novel) is depicted as rude and abrasive, considering how official media describes Ninten's personality as being similar to Luke Skywalker. Even then, I can't argue that it's an interesting interpretation of the character.

Hello! Translator here! Not much was censored, but anything that was is explained at the end of the doc! I didn't want to hide or change anything completely. Most of the story (99.9%) is completely intact! ❤️
There's only a handful of censored lines in the entire book, and I think every modification was for the best (you'll see when you read them, usually it's a single word that's replaced). Then there's one omitted bit from the original that was offensive/outdated. You can scroll all the way down to the "Edit/Censor/Localization Log" to see them

Why do I think the story in the novel is surprisingly better than the original? Because the original story is really lacking and simple, the novel helped extending it with small details here and there, and making it more mature like earthbound's and Mother 3's plots. If Mother 1 wasn't so limited and was on the SNES, then a story similar or even identical to the novel's should have been chosen for it. Mother 1 always felt like the odd one out. It is like a normal story, with few weird features to make the player laugh, and personality is completely missing from anything. Compare that to Earthbound (mostly), but also mother 3. Interesting RPGs, with Unique story, (I know EB's story is practically the same as Mother 1's, but is told much better than the latter) very weird stuff that give the games personality, funny-lookin' enemies, diversity, personal moments depicted by cutscenes etc. Mother 1 is on a way too limited software to do these, but IF, if we got a remake someday, I want the novel's storyline present. For the most part, it would like a 10+ game, but I would even try and tell some with less detail or differently, like the possessed mass of people scene and the following (not remove it, it is too cool to remove, but less of that disturbing detail), or flat out remove some things like thr baby warping everyone to Lloyd's town or the mice tearing Ana apart or the last words of the novel

That's LIVE A LIVE, it just came out on Switch this past month! It's an HD-2D remake of what was a Japan-only RPG from 1994. It stars lots of characters from different time periods you can name, so of course I went with Flint for the cowboy 😅

Physically, they changed his hair from black to blonde and gave him blue eyes. Personality-wise, I know he's a supposed to be a blank slate character, but I always interpereted him as being humble & kind. He's exactly the opposite in the book: overbearing, loud, and (mostly) rude to Ana & Lloyd.
