  • Kramzer and Joe look at one of the most iconic bands of all time in this week's Listography. Today they're ranking the nine studio albums of The Doors.
    ****
The Doors were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They were among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s, mostly because of Morrison's lyrics and voice along with his erratic stage persona, and the group was widely regarded as an important part of the era's counterculture.
The band took its name from the title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception, itself a reference to a quote by William Blake. After signing with Elektra Records, the Doors with Morrison released six albums in five years, some of which are considered among the greatest of all time, including The Doors (1967), Strange Days (1967), and L.A. Woman (1971). They were one of the most successful bands during that time and by 1972 the Doors had sold over 4 million albums domestically and nearly 8 million singles.
Morrison died in uncertain circumstances in 1971. The band continued as a trio until disbanding in 1973. They released three more albums in the 1970s, two of which featured earlier recordings by Morrison, and over the decades reunited on stage in various configurations. In 2002, Manzarek, Krieger and Ian Astbury of the Cult on vocals started performing as the Doors of the 21st Century. Densmore and the Morrison estate successfully sued them over the use of the band's name. After a short time as Riders on the Storm, they settled on the name Manzarek-Krieger and toured until Manzarek's death in 2013.
The Doors were the first American band to accumulate eight consecutive gold LPs. According to the RIAA, they have sold 33 million records in the US and over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. The Doors have been listed as one of the greatest artists of all time by magazines including Rolling Stone, which ranked them 41st on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". In 1993, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I absolutely love The Doors. They are a Top 10 band for me. The bluesy psychedelic sound, Morrison's hypnotic yet equally lush and menacing voice, his fascinating lyrics. But I get why people don't like them.

Strange days is not a popular album, and usually not so well ranked as the debut or Morrison Hotel, but to me it is the most consistent one, with an overall dark moody psychedelic feel. It lack hits like the other ones, but all songs seems to go very well together. I feel the other albums are somehow a little disjointed, and this is the only one that really feels like a real album.

Hi guys. Working my way a bit haphazardly through your listographies - really enjoying them.
In regard to The Doors' influence, you might want to check out The Stranglers, an English band from Surrey whose original line-up was very popular in the UK and also did pretty well in Australia and parts of Europe.
Having denied it initially, they later admitted that they were quite heavily influenced by The Doors, most evident through the work of their keyboard player, Dave Greenfield (who, sadly, died of Covid-19 last summer).
Although they broke through as part of the UK punk scene, they were a bit older and more musically adept than their peers, and the original four-piece line-up (10 studio albums of rankable quality) remain one of my favourite bands - easily in my top 30.
Thank you for the lists. Looking forward to seeing what you tackle in the future while I continue to catch up.

The Doors have been my favorite since about 12 when I bought the 2CD Best Of, so it was a little tough to hear some of your opinions and rankings on this, but appreciate them nonetheless. I have always deeply connected with them, and later in life came to appreciate each member's contributions. They were/are so unique, and very American - for whatever that means, not sure how to articulate it.
Morrison Hotel and Soft Parade are my two favorites atm.

    • @crowfeedreactions
      @crowfeedreactions 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I also bought that 2 CD "Best of" as my first introduction to The Doors and it was great! But then when I delved deeper into their catalogue, there was so much gold to find. It's not often that happens for me. Usually, when a band puts out a "greatest hits" album, the songs they didn't include are decidedly mid (ahem... looking at you, Eagles!). Not so for The Doors!

I definitely rate Soft Parade higher and LA Woman. Off the top of my head, a top 5:
    1. The Doors (Classic with amazing songs throughout)
    2. LA Woman (title track, Riders on the Storm, Love Her Madly, good stuff)
    3. Strange Days (title track, Love Me Two Times, When the Music's Over)
    4. Soft Parade (title track, Touch Me, Tell All The People, solid album IMO)
    5. Morrison Hotel (ROADHOUSE BLUES!, Waiting for the Sun, Indian Summer, amazing 1-2 opener)
Honorable mention for Five to One, GREAT TRACK! I just rediscovered these guys after many years and they rule. They were doing stuff in the late 60's that reminds me of Deep Purple. Their music was really diverse and a lot of it rocked. I would not call them a "proto metal band" but some of their stuff scorches. Great band that I encourage anybody to discover today, in 2024.

Stay in the moment. Be whole. That's exactly what makes The Soft Parade so great. The album runs like a soldier, as if conducted by Sir Eliot Gardiner. Of course there are the bigger songs on the Doors' other LPs. Hardly any of their other albums are so well rounded.

My DOORS top 10 is a bit predicatble. On top is the debut album THE DOORS followed closely by LA WOMAN and STRANGE DAYS. All 3 absolute classics! Almost as good is MORRISON HOTEL with WAITING FOR THE SUN and SOFT PAARADE being a bit lesser albums but still crying to be heard.

Not To Touch the Earth was definitely a great Heavy song ( though it does seem like it's incomplete ) , I love Unhappy Girl from Strange Days . My least favorite is easily the Soft Parade , it comes across as a bit experimental , and alienated from the other albums. I lean towards their weird music , more than the pop and blues . Fortunately I have never heard the post Jim Morrison material . This video certainly didn't inspire me to go out and buy them. I do however enjoy American Prayer , as it is equivalent to a whole album of the song The End ( always wanted that song to last another 25 minutes ) . That along with Pink Floyd - Ummagumma are both brilliant when you want to get in that strange place hid within your mind . I love the Celebration of the Lizard the long song that includes the incomplete Not to Touch the Earth . I would have liked to see Hello I Love You replaced by Waiting For the Sun , and Celebration of the Lizard included to make Waiting For the Sun the album it should have been . Hello I Love You would fit the mood of Soft Parade much better than Waiting For the Sun . As it is I believe the Doors debut , Strange Days , and Morrison Motel to be the best albums ( LA Woman just has too much Blues for my tastes ) . I would put the 3 I mentioned as all equal to each other as the Doors most consistent , and engaging body of work

Nice list, as always. For me, a very good band, though probably not in my top 20. I know using the word "interesting" is typically not a great thing in rock music, but they really were. For my list, I did not include An American Prayer. For me, this should've been called An American Cash Grab. Just pretentious and unnecessary.
    Other than that:
    8. Other Voices. Wretched. I was too young to remember when this came out, but I can only imagine the universal shrugging of shoulders and shaking of heads when it did.
    7. Full Circle. Slightly better. But slightly better than #8 isn't saying much.
    6. Strange Days. Hard to repeat their classic debut. In hard rock/metal terms, this would be like Van Halen II compared to Van Halen I. But that's just me.
5.The Soft Parade. Wishful Sinful is great. Touch Me, even better. Overall a pretty polarizing record, but holds up well.
4.Morrison Hotel. Very confident record. Peace Frog still one of my favorites.
    3. Waiting For The Sun. I wanted to rank this higher. I should be terribly sick of Hello, I Love You, but nope. Still great. Love Street, same.
    2. The Doors debut. I'm so torn between this and my number one. It will never get old.
    1. LA Woman. I can't think of a band with better bookend albums (obviously not counting the post-Morrison debacle). Just fantastic.

For me, the first 2 albums are the best by a lot, with both making my 1967 top 5 and Strange Days edging out the debut (I think “When The Music’s Over” works a bit better than “The End” and the darkness overall feels more convincing). “Light My Fire” is my favorite song of theirs, though. At the bottom, Other Voices may be the most consistently mediocre album I’ve ever heard, but I think the lows are worse on Full Circle, and An American Prayer seems to suggest that Jim Morrison’s poetry outside the context of actual songs is mostly just stupid.
    1. Strange Days
    2. The Doors
    3. L.A. Woman (this was my #4 for awhile, but I like the title track more than I used to)
    4. Morrison Hotel
    5. Waiting For The Sun
    6. The Soft Parade
    7. Other Voices
    8. Full Circle
    9. An American Prayer

Crazy how music is so subjective. I've known musicians who only like The Doors when they're at their most bluesy. They're not fans of stuff like "Light My Fire" because to them it sounds like circus music. Personally, I enjoy the bluesy and the baroque side of The Doors. If they didn't have both dimensions I probably wouldn't think as highly of them.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Hey Whammy - Yeah. It's not that i'm a blues-hater just don't find the genre that interesting. I love the carnivelesque sound which I suppose is a combo of the keyboards, no bass, and the songs thenselves. Nothhing in the world like Jim's voice of course.

@@NaughtyVampireGod To me, Jim pretty much *was* the band- all due respect to the other guys. I can't fathom people who say they don't like his voice. He was otherworldly. The proof of how important he was is in how bad their music got once he wasn't around anymore.

    • @NaughtyVampireGod
      @NaughtyVampireGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Well yeah, all about Jim. For sure. They were a great band - just not without Morrison as history has shown. I kind of agree the statements that the other band members don't get enough credit. Yet it was such a BAD decision to try to continue on without Jim. At the very least The Doors name should have been retired. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the Morrison-less band was actually going to call themselves "Other Voices" but ultimately decided to call the album Other Voices and keep the Doors name.

    • @mck7646

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Very true. Jim was the key, the perfect voice to put in front of that music. I still only stick with the classics.

    1. The Doors; 2. The Soft Parade; 3. Morrison Hotel; 4. LA Woman; 5. Strange Days; 6. Waiting for the Sun. I think the critics missed the point of The Soft Parade, which is a concept album about man's rejection of God, and his descent into hell, as epitomized by song The Soft Parade. I think the Doors wrote songs like The End, When the Music's Over, and The Soft Parade because of Jim Morrison's fixation on God, death, and hell.
