    Great first review. I have a 2017 CB500X and have found it to be totally reliable, very frugal and fun to use for both touring and weekend rides. My wife enjoys riding pillion and as an all rounder I would recommend this bike to anyone wanting a solid machine where the scenery and simple biking pleasure is more important than absolute performance.....The 2022 upgrades look very worthwhile and that green colour rather tempting! Cheers.

      I can’t fault my 2017 either, which I’ve modded a lot. I’d like the new one but I wouldn’t want to get it filthy like the older one though!

      How is the comfort on trips?

    • @quentinjackson6015
      @quentinjackson6015 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaeljohnson2922 I am above average height and I find the bike comfortable. I have done some distance rides and tours without any issues. If I did a lot of motorway miles with a pillion and luggage then I might feel the need for a bigger and more powerful machine......but every motorcycle is a compromise!

    Just bought one after getting my A2 license here in France, glad I chose a brand new 2022, the improvements from the previous models seem worth it !

      Bonjour l'Ami,
      Moi aussi j'ai acheté le model 2022 après avoir passé le A2 il y a 5 mois
      (j'ai 62 ans).!
      J'ai le sentiment qu'en seconde (2ème) lors d'une accélération rapide, le moteur ne se libère pas !?
      Pourrais-je savoir la vitesse que vous obtenez en 2ème à 6000 tours /minute ?
      Merci d'avance

    I have the 2020, it is the best bike I have owned,. It is so well balanced & is unbelievably comfortable & is as reliable as they come. I will buy another bike, when this one gets old, but I could never sell it, it would break my heart I am that attached to it.

    Here’s some input from an old fart. This bike has similar performance numbers to our old super bikes. The BSA Lightning and the Triumph Bonneville. A tad heavier but suspension, brakes and comfort, unbelievable.

    • @jamesdarnell8568
      @jamesdarnell8568 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a 1967 BSA Lightning back in the late 1970s. Six more horsepower than the CB500X but the biggest upgrade with the modern bikes is in the handling and braking. That old Lightning was fast but her drum brakes didn't slow her down very well and her handling was not even close to today's machines. Much of that handling improvement may also be due to the much better tires we have now.

    Damn, these upgrades make an already good bike even better. I have a 2021 and I really like it. The 2022 model however basically fixed the all the small points of criticism I have of mine. Upside-down forks, dual discs, and better low speed fueling. I'd happily pay another 100 for that! Also great review as always Dan

      I was in the showroom when they had the last 2 models. So yours has 19" front wheel, nicer dash, led indicators, rear brake reservoir In a better place and the newer style bodywork. Looked way better than the previous one, I really liked the white one with green grafix But honda have done it again!

      I just don't know if I'd be happier with the new usd forks over my 2018 standard but adjustable forks. Which I still don't know how to set up

    • @chrisredfield3240
      @chrisredfield3240 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Daniel-dj7fh I think you only have preload on your fork. And only 140mm travel. As long as they move when you ride the bike and don't bottom out you're all good. If you had rebound damping that would make it more comfortable as it would not rebound as fast. If you had compression damping this would make the suspension harder as the forks would not compress as much. Hope that helps.

    • @Marvininini
      @Marvininini 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisredfield3240 All suspensions have rebound and compression dampening. It's just not adjustable on all bikes, including the cb500x. You're right, the older models could only adjust preload, whether in 5 or 7 steps has changed throughout the years.

I had a CBR500R a few years back and it was a cracking little bike. Had other bikes since then but all cost much more to buy, run and insure. I’m definitely going to get one of these next year. Can’t wait. Thanks for the vids Dan. Always look forward to them. Whatever you’re reviewing.

    Top review mate! I've been excited for the 2022 CB500X and your review has made be even more! Even though im on route to get my A license im seriously considering getting on of these for its lightwieght adventure/touring potential. Will be great to see when you take it touring.
    Also I really appreciate that your views are coming from a non-bias POV and taking into account the the audience the bike is made for! I find a lot of TH-cam Bike reviewers to be reviewing bikes only from a place of 25+ years of experience on the track - which really doesnt give a realsitic view!

    Hi Dan, I really enjoyed the review, sold my Yamaha fz1-n in august and I have now this exact one on order with delivery in March🤞🏻 organic Pearl green !! Mainly from this concise review, as I couldn’t test ride one, nor even see one in the dealership, as they haven’t had one for 15 months…….they had one in the service department for me to view, in for its 1st 600 mile service, and put in the order there and then……now the fun starts, sourcing new luggage, clothing and boots. And planning a Normandy trip. Ride safe

    Awesome upgrades by Honda. I have owned & loved a CB500X 2017 for 3.5 years, then i bought a Triumph Tiger 900 GT. One of the 2 things i didn’t liked on my CB500X 2017 was the first gear that was way to short. It was annoying for me. How is the first gear on the 2022? Still to much short? The second thing i didn’t liked was to ride it over 100 km/h, the engine was “reving” to much high, but, it’s normal for a 471 cc engine. I would have love to have a CB650X. Anyway, now i really love my new bike, so far 17500 km of happiness. But, sometimes, i miss the great agility of a smaller bike, like was my CB500X.

    • @schadowization
      @schadowization 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It the gearing stayed the same as the 2019 Model it's still to short. Constantly hunting for the 7th gear on the Highway.
      However, changing the 15 tooth front sprocket for a 16 tooth (i got the one from a NC750X) mostly fixes this issue. It's still a bit short but now really usable.
      On the highway you're still at 5600 rpm at 120km/h and you definitively feel the vibrations in the handlebar and footpegs. It's not to bad tho, even swapped the standard pegs for ones without rubber insert and it's not bothering me.

    • @schadowization
      @schadowization 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My main complaint about the bike is the ergonomy, i'm just to big for it. (1.9m, 98kg fully geared up) my bum hurts after about 100km and my knees need a break every 200km.
      In about 8 Months i get my full A license so im already looking at the used market for a 1200 GSA

    Thanks for posting. I’ve got my eyes on one of these for the spring. Just sold my beloved VFR800 (5th gen’) and feeling a bit glum! Anyway, rationality mean, at my advancing years, a lighter, more usable bike, and I believe this little Honda admirably fits the bill. I suspect the built won’t be so good as the VFR (what bike was/is?) but running costs, centre stand, light(ish) weight, ability to tour - what’s not to like? I guess the answer to that question is test ride……over to you Dan.

    - How it is with a pillion passenger
    - Get some bags/cases on it and see how the added weight effects the ride
    - Get the opinion of someone a bit taller - 5’10” - 6’1” for how the ergonomics are for them
    Great video, looking forward to more, subscribed to see where this goes.

    Smooth gear change by the look of it. I considered a new Africa Twin 1100, but too big, too heavy and too thirsty... I'll stick with the plan and go with the CB500X. I'll put on hand guards, centre stand, engine bars, Givi Trekker aluminium luggage and feel like I'll have a good all-rounder?

    Nice review Dan, I've got the previous model booked for a week on a winter fly ride holiday. Never ridden one so hoping I've made the right decision. Looking at the range, the Honda will go 3 times as far as my MT10 on a tank of fuel!

    I’ve had the 2022 bike for about 6 months and done just under 2000 kms, generally it’s a good little bike, for me personally it’s one major hang up is the wind buffering you get from the screen,it’s ridiculous and after a while becomes bloody annoying , I’ve tried every position possible with the standard screen and have since fitted a Puig touring screen with additional deflector which improves it a little but not significantly. This really sucks and could be a game changer for me, next move is to take the screen off completely.

    Hi Dan, many thanks for the review. I have a 2019 BMW G310GS which has been a big disappointment and am considering changing this for the 2022 CB500X. I am exactly the same size as you at 5'7" with a 29" leg so may I suggest a back to back comparison between the 500X & 310GS. I am on the outskirts of Bristol close to Wales where there are some fabulous roads but am happy to travel for the comparison if required. If you would like to do this during your 3 month test please let me know.

    Good to hear you will have the bike for 3months. It would be good to get your feedback on its commuting abilities as you have a lot of experience in this area. I.e. real world mpg (not what the dash says), performance on motorway to city traffic, including filtering (handlebars/mirror height). What’s it like to manoeuvre in and out of a garage. What’s the rear suspension performance like with luggage or two up riding (try any soft luggage bag with some reasonable weight), is there an option to adjust the preload on the rear? What’s the adjustable windscreen like for your height. What add on would you consider…heated grips etc.

    Centre stand standard? I had to get one fitted to my CB500F. All my riding is solo and I find it has all the power I need. The screen provides valuable wind protection. Also the mounting bracket for my GPS. I also fitted a Givi 56 litre top box. 471cc saves a lot on Rego being below 500cc. Very tempted to upgrade /update.

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No that's an optional extra as I mention in the vid. I keep looking at the CB500F myself as a workhorse bike and something to do some trackdays on too.

      @@Englishbikerdan I use mine mainly as a commute,shopping bike as there's a lot of places you can't get parking. Also day regional trips. I just got back into bikes about 2 years ago after along absence and having owned many large capacity bikes. Around town litre bikes are overkill and a waste of money.

    Not to drastic of a change, brakes and suspension is fine on the 2021model, But for the sake of £100 extra that’s one heck of an upgrade.However, Damping one side and a spring the other, sounds a bit lob-sided to me. I would prefer both forks doing the same as each other.

    Thanks , yep totally agree with this, a comfy bike to cruise around on, may upgrade from my crf250l , it seems they share the same front forks working well to keep the weight low by seperate functions in each, and easy to to work on. I'd probably go for a black one and add decals of my choosing though.

    • @farmoboy83
      @farmoboy83 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short gears are normal in this power range to make full use of torq when accelerating. Topspeed is around 170kmh so it's normal to rev higher at this speed than more powerfull twin cylinder bikes. Even my sv650, 50%more powerful runs at 6000rpm at 125kmph

    • @vincebuc6700
      @vincebuc6700 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      farmoboy83 top speed of 170 kmh is hard to believe. I see about the revs but 6.500 rpm at the cruising speed of 120 kmh but it is perhaps not ideal for long distances

    • @farmoboy83
      @farmoboy83 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vincebuc6700 you may not believe but it is the true and this tall cb500x model with 19 front wheel have a topspeed even Lower that the cb500f / cb500r twins. The confort of the journey is not related to engi e rpm but engine behavior at certain rpms. For example, sv650 is smoother above 5000rpm than below that. My 300cc scooter is silky smooth even at full throttle around 140kmh...some bikes havre terrible engine vibrations at certain rpms, even big engines that cruise below 4000rpm at 130kph.
