I'm here after Käärijäs Eurovision entry ❤ he is such a charismatic, loveable man ✨ and got me interested in the language now. I know Finnish is quite difficult to learn, but I teach German so nothing can really shock me anymore 😂
We lived in Kulosaari for 12+ months in 1973/74. In that time I learned maybe something less than 20 Finnish words not counting being able to count a bit. My wife was rather better than I was but the Art College had to give her the anatomy lessons in English not Swedish or Finnish. Finnish seems impossible plus socially I needed Swedish.

I'm learning Finnish and I tried Duolingo but it just teaches words and along the way I realized the alphabet was different from ours and the app doesn't teach it so I decided to supplement my lessons. You have no idea how nice it is to have found you. You pronounce in a way I can hear the letters. Thank you.

She never taught me to speak it as we didn’t live in Finland and since my dad was also an immigrant to the country I grew up, there were 3 languages in the house. So she said she thought a 4th would be too much for me as a child. But honestly I think she loved the fact that she could speak to her sister and friends over the phone without anyone knowing what she was saying 😅❤️. She’s not with us anymore and I feel I want to know more about where she was from and maybe surprise my cousin and aunt one day. My aunt does not speak english, it would be great to be able to talk to her one day. So thank you for your generous help ❄️🌺🙏

Moi Anna, I have a suggestion; I think a video on what methods and ways to study the language would be great. Like pointers on how often to read a book in Finnish, and article, and what we should keep an eye out. Maybe even someday a simple work sheet that can come along as an extra or something to every video.

I'm a spanish speaker, and actually, pronouncing all of those letters weren't so difficult for me, since the soumi alphabet has almost the same sounds as the spanish alphabet, but the Y is also easy due to the second official language in my country, where it is also pronounced like that, either way, kiitos. Hopefully it will help someone else. 99% of the language teachers fail when it comes to pronounciation. You need to show a picture where wr can see the tongue position. We need to see how the lips/mouth moves and we need to hear to sound. Without the tungue position mastering pronounciation takes years or anbeternity. Phonetic writing is also useless for people who did not learnt how to read it. Thanks anyway and have a nice day!

Hello, great video! Perfectly comprehensible with its examples and additional notes in all but one aspect; the sound that Y represents in Finnish. It's a common thing among many roman alphabet-using languages to utilize some of its letters in different ways; J, X, W, etc... From what I understood, it's used as another vowel that sounds somewhat like a U but (probably?) isn't the same. A small clarifying side-note on that wouldn't hurt, that's all. Have a nice one :D

Well Finns say "vihree". The official form is "vihreä" but nobody says it so.
I'm planning to move to Finland after school... Duolingo doesn't do a course on Finnish. I'm going to give this a shot, I'll keep my progress updated
