Yamaha XT225 TTR230 Upgrade Cam Bearing to Ball Type

  • How to replace the journal type cam bearing in the XT225 with a 6005 type ball bearing. This bearing is a common point of failure in these engines. The cam bearing in one of my XT225s seized so I replaced the bearing in both bikes with SKF 6005 bearings. I made this video while working on the second bike. Same thing for TTR230.
    The seized engine was caused by using an incorrect oil filter which blocked oil flow to the head. You may say that this mod isn't necessary if you use the right oil filter and I agree, however I did see some visible wear on the journal bearing I removed from the bike that wasn't seized. It is easy to do and only costs $8 for the bearing on ebay so that is why I'm doing it.

    I was reading another forum article on this rework and he was saying much the same, with similar experiences. He did say that of the various types of 6005 bearing available he went for the 6005ZZ. The metal sealed ones would stand the cylinder head temps whereas the rubber seals may not. He also suggested removing the metal shield from one side for bearing lubrication but to keep the outer seal in place. his reasoning was that it would prevent head oil draining away when parked on the side stand.

    Worked great, The only thing I did different Was clean the grease from the bearings and replace it with engine assembly lube so the oil passages didn't get clogged with grease.

    Hey Alex, great video! My XT filter checked out fine, and engine still runs, but with lots of "piston slap" noise. I adjusted valves to spec, and they weren't far off. The bad; when I turn my crankshaft manually with a wrench, it makes a very audible metal friction sound throughout the strokes. Any thoughts before I take it into a local mechanic? Is a top end rebuild within a beginners ability and worth the $ for an XT? 10kmiles btw. Thanks again!

    Very informative video. I just wonder if the aluminum bushing was designed in part to direct the oil flow where needed vs the bearing which may starve parts for oil?

    • @alexkram
      @alexkram  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is an oil supply hole in the cam that supplies oil to the bushing. The bearing covers up that hole, which forces that oil to other areas like the other bearing and the cam lobes. That is the way I was thinking anyway. I have since sold this bike but it ran fine for 1000 miles before I did.

    Great video and thanks for posting. I made the same mistake this week with the wrong oil filter. The bike started chirping and then locked. It runs now (with the proper filter) but I've been told to do this. Are you fairly sure only the bearing is needed ? Thanks in advance.

    • @alexkram
      @alexkram  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so. It's not hard to do but you will have metal shavings to clean up too probably. I did not need to replace the cam when my other bike seized, I just cleaned it up with some scotchbrite.

    Whats the advantage of swapping to ball bearing?

    • @alexkram
      @alexkram  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are a few advantages. I think the ball bearing will last much longer between failures because a journal type bearing requires some oil pressure to work and the design of this engine, with holes at the cam lobes, does not provide oil pressure to the chain side bearing. A ball bearing does not need oil pressure, just some oil now and then. This is my understanding of how these types of bearings work. Also the stock part costs $60 to replace while the ball bearing costs $5, so once seized the ball bearing is the cheaper choice too.

      Wr250 fits an xt250- paper element. TW200, xt225, ttr225 and 230- same thing- all have a fine mesh metal filter with a special oil hole. Did you watch the beginning of the video? And in my opinion those ball bearings would not hold proper oil pressure
