Check out Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown sometime. It is huge and flood victims are buried in one plot. In Westmont. At maximum, Altoona had 110,000 population just within city limits. Medical helicopters at UPMC Altoona Hospital - trauma center.

I lived in that area for two years. I enjoyed my job there but didn't care for the rest of Altoona. But I would walk through this cemetery with my dog. From what I read, family members paid an annual fee and since no one can be buried there anymore, and the surviving ancestors of the dead have either forgotten about the graves, means there's no more money coming into this cemetery for upkeep/maintenance. It's all based on volunteers can to keep the upkeep on the cemetery. A couple of months ago I was walking my dog through the cemetery, a tree was blown over from a storm and uplifted a grave exposing a rotten casket, I peeked in briefly.

Before moving right there, the university paid for our trip in May to visit the and scope out the area. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We just knew that my husband accepted a job offer there and needed a place and found a place off of Lexington Ave. We came with a big dog and two cats. And needed a place before the university started. I had no clue that street was so drug ridden. I did as much research as I could before we moved across the country. Even our landlord was surprised we moved to that area. We just had no idea about the area. In a couple of days...we found out how bad it was.

We had another neighbor who abandoned her pets and we constantly called the police for help. The dogs survived apparently the cat and her kittens died. That was heart breaking. That place was covered in trash and mold. You would walk pass and smell the humidity. It was condemned but they were still living there.

We have our own private parking area in the back to fit two fit two cars, on the second day of moving in, after coming back from dinner, there was a car in our parking lot. It was running, all the lights were on, driver door opened, and a lady slumped across the across the steering wheel. It wasn't like she was "tired and sleeping" she looked dead. I was like "oh no she OD!" We called the cops for a welfare check. They gave her narcan(which I didn't know anything about it) and she survived

Thanks for sharing, John. This brought back great memories of my days in Altoona as a boy. Born and raised there, I recall many things. Altoona is noted for his railroad history, high school state champion teams, hills, churches, and bars. The city is the home of Sheetz's markets. The Sheetz you passed is built on the site of the former Cricket Field where many baseball and football games were played in my grade school years. Babe Ruth played an exhibition game and hit a home run almost to the Altoona Hospital (now UPMC Altoona) on the hill. The helicopter was probably bringing a trauma case to the hospital. I never walked through the Fairview Cemetery. It's very appealing with its old markers and eerie look. William F. Gable, the founder of Gables Department Store, a city landmark for many years, is buried there. The Find a Grave site indicates there are 13, 914 memorials added to their site. There are probably many more not added to the Find a Grave website. The old vault serves the Ferguson, Elway, and Hamlin, families. The big corner building across from the beautiful historic home was the Howard Avenue Armory in my youth. We played rec basketball there. The McCartney building was the premier office supply store long before Staples and Office Max. The large brick building beside the train store (still open and relocated in the city) was the home of the Altoona Mirror newspaper. I went there 6 days a week for a couple of years to pick up newspapers to deliver. My dad took my brothers and me to watch trains on the old 17th Street bridge as well as at the Horseshoe Curve. After college graduation, I moved to the Harrisburg area, but my family and I have returned numerous times to visit family members.

Thank you.... JP .... for the "Great Escapes". These will live on forever...and for our children also. Love the FORD. ⚡
Lost my breathe as you walked thru the cemetery gate.... And it's so beautiful....💫

I grew up just south of there! If you're ever out that way train watching this site has a lot of info, although all the older RR signals have been replaced.

There are also two towers AR & MG west of the Horseshoe Curve that will be demolished soon, AR is in Galitzin, MG unfortunately is not accessible.
You can view the turn table at the shops at 40.536778,-78.380784 just east of the bridge you are on.

What a nice little jaunt around Altoona. Pity and a shame to see such a quaint ol cemetery some what neglected.
