"ALL I WANT IS THE PERFECT LED"
I thought I had found the perfect "ALL IN ONE" light
so I Jumped on the HYPE train for "Rotolight" Thanks to Jason Lanier and his wonderful Videos and photography skills. ........
    WOW, what a mistake........So disappointed.
    I bought an ANOVO PRO2 for $1699
Then, After some hours of using the Rotolight and comparing it to my $350 GODOX SLB60-W and my $600 AD600 STROBE, I found that my GODOX system overpowers the Rotolight by at least 20%.
If all your doing is Indoor or night photography and video work then
this light may be for you But if you think (Like I did) that this light
will work outdoors in bright sunlight then you may want to reconsider
your options and check out the Godox System
Why can't manufacturers make the ULTIMATE portable LED/Strobe unit?
    Pros:
    3150 Kelvin - 6300 Kelvin ( Bi Colour model )
    Overall CRI = 96 & R15 Skintone = 99
    portable battery operated
continuous Flash with no recycle times
Cool programmable effects IE: Lightning, fire place, TV, Police, Etc
    Cons:
    Super Pricey ($1700)
    Doesn't come with V-Lock Battery ( super expensive )
HSS Flash isn't very powerful for outdoor use
Have to purchase tons of extras from Rotolight
Rotolight Softbox and barn doors ONLY
Not very bright for the money spent
    Controller cost $250
    Barn dors cost $150
    Softbox cost $200
    Battery cost $350
    Charger cost $200
    ******************TOTAL= $2750 for One Light

Ken Wheeler, you are such a tool. Comment like yours, uttered by someone who puts his name on other people's work to try to pass it off as his own commands no respect from decent people. You have no sense of photography, nor what it takes equipment or otherwise to make great pictures.
Love your video with Jason Lanier where you bring a medium frame camera that you could neither use, nor make enough excuses about why your pictures were SOOOO BADDD. Meanwhile, people like myself and many others use Godox, ProFoto, Rotolight and other tools for what they were specifically designed to do, and are able to create wonderful photos. Stop talking out your butt Ken.

Hi Rick, sorry to hear you aren't satisfied with your Anova PRO 2. LEDs absolutely will not match the sheer power of strobe or traditional flash gun, but they do offer more flexibility which you've referenced already (bi-colour, continuous and flash unit all-in-one, no recycle time, battery power, CineSFX) so for those creatives who aren't looking for sheer power but are working with different mediums and need an excellent quality of light that is adjustable and reasonably portable (our other units are more portable but less output) then the Rotolight range is the only light out there offering such functionality. We're investing heavily in LED technology and I can excitedly assure you that as technology advances we're able to harness more and more power out of the LEDs which we know you all want. We have an exciting roadmaps of 15 new products in the next 5 years and many of those will be considerably brighter than any other LED on the market, as we creep closer to comparable output of speedlites etc. Hope that helps! :)

      Thanks for your reply
I have a few suggestions that would help me out as a creator.
      one of them being:
umbrellas are still a useful tool and a super easy/cheap way to diffuse and soften the light.
I see one of your ambassadors "Jason Linier" using them all of the time
If you were to put a center Hole in all of your lights to be able to slide an umbrella stem thru the hole and tighten it down or even a "self-tightening" hole.
then the Roto light would be centered to the umbrella instead of how we have to do it now which is have the umbrella attached to the light stand and "Off- Centered"
I hope to see future models have something similar to this as well as new brighter capabilities
      best regards, Rick

Rotolight - We use Roto’s as well as Broncolor and Flashpoint/Godox, as they all have their own unique set of capabilities and trade-offs. One has to consider their own specific needs and priorities/acceptable trade-offs first, before looking at specific products in their given price range.
I can tell you first hand that we are overjoyed when we can not have to transport, set-up and break-down the big Broncolor rigs, and instead use the amazingly flexible and consistent Rotolights. Shooting at full speed was unheard of at any price just a few years ago, but even our $50K rig cannot burst at 10-20fps for long at the typical power levels we use the for, while we have shot all day at full speed on the Roto’s... on little rechargeable consumer batteries! I can only imagine where the state of the art in LED will be in a few years. Thanks for being at the leading-edge of lighting.

The Anova does seem rather overpriced to me personally but I own three Neo 2’s and they are the best lighting solution I have bought in years. They will never replace a dedicated flash unit but that’s not the point. They are flexible and adaptable in a way that is invaluable to me. I really think in this video you end up comparing apples to oranges. I also think the nature of some of the comments about Jason Lanier should not be encouraged. Of course he is sponsored by Rotolight, but that’s no excuse for people to get personal and then receive a ❤️ as a reward.

I bought a Godox 680 with trigger and found them to be unreliable. I couldn’t get them to work without an hour of effort. Rotolights work easily. Plus they are RBG. I’m editing images now where I used them to color a white wall; my subjects had a ball choosing their colors. Orange on the right and pink on the left. They are in front illuminated by other lights. I also used my Rotolights to flash a night-time action shoot. My Sony a7R3 does 10 images per second and my Rotolights flash at the same rate without having to recharge a capacitor between shots. It all depends on what you’re shooting, I guess.
I do agree with you about the eye watering prices of accessories. My two came with batteries and chargers, but I need modifiers.

I agree with much of what you say, the rotolight is useful for use on location where there is no mains power available,
or where you dont want to run cables.
It also has a thin form factor which is great for restricted spaces.
But the power output isn't great, although obviously you can get round this by bumping up your iso, and most modern cameras wont produce any noise until very high iso's are reached.
But I have to say the rotolight range seems to be very expensive, and there are far better value for money options out there.

Over the years of having that AP2 full kit, I've grown to love it. I actually have gotten my money's worth out of it. You do have to compare the full flash power of the AP2 to the HSS power of the Godox. I'm not sure how they compare. It's cool that you don't have to HSS with the AP2. It's at whatever power at whatever Shutter Speed. It's saved my bacon on a number of shoots, as the battery life with my V-Mount or the PC Buff Vagabond is absolutely stupid. Thousands of flashes and hours of LED at full power. I was really worried at first and felt exactly like you do. lol.

I have watched Jason Lanier for years as well, and what I have noticed is that since he has started using Rotolight on a normal basis, he has had to change the times and locations of what he shoots, to allow the Rotolights to do their job. He was the king of over-powering the sun and giving us these dramatic photos for a long time, and that was his style. But he didnt all of a sudden change his style because he wanted to, he now has to shoot in either mostly dark areas to use the rotolight because less power output is needed, or he has to shoot in well lit areas where he only needs some shadow fill, and he doesnt over power the sun giving us those "fake skies" like he used to. So I don't think he's using what "works best for him", I think he's using what he's paid to use, and has to then be at the mercy of available light to find where the rotolights work well. Otherwise he used to preach in his videos about how he could shoot anywhere, anytime with his gear and get his desired results. It is not the case now with the lower output of these rotolights. With all of that being said, I think they are amazing video lights and when used for photography can produce great results under the right conditions. But Jasons older work with strobes could be used any time of day, and he could get any look he wanted, but not so anymore.

    Hello
You just bought the wrong tool for your needs.
Rotolights are fantastic gear but certainly not the best or cheapest solution to mount into a softbox. For a softbox you just need strait power.
For photographic use Rotolights are best with just barndoors and the delivered diffusion sheet, very close to the subject (between 2x and 4x the light diameter) what gives a nice unique directive light with long smooth transitions.
The Elinchrom Pro transmitter is very sophisticated controller for Elinchrom TTL and non TTL flashes you really don't need with your Rotolight that also has a sync socket for a cheap flash transmitter. I use the Elinchrom Pro to control together on the same setup multiple Elinchrom flashes (6 units) and Rotolights (3 units).
Rotolight ANOVA isn't the best choice for a photographic use, they are primarily meant for broadcast, movie and stage, when they are piggybacked and tethered to a professional lighting control console.
For photographic use I have a AEOS for the key and 2 NEO's.

Hi Rick, thank you for the video. I also watched the video you recommend in your link, and I am going to repost an edited comment I made there, because I am interested in you opinion. I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about this light. I am considering it for myself as well, now it is ridiculously expensive and from what I have seen around the internet, you can use it to shoot in direct sunlight, it has that kind of power, but yes, it has to be close to the model. I think two meters is pretty much the furthest you can put it and keep solid strength. The guy in the video you recommended was using it on the snow and that is just a suicide. There is way too much light reflexion from the snow on such a sunny day for the snow to be correctly exposed while using this light. The rotolight wasn't built for that. But yes, for the price, we would wish it would. The selling point of this light is it is bi colour, constant and flash light in the same time and extremely portable. Any LED light is loosing massive amount of LUX with each 50cm. APUTURE 120D mark ii does 30 000 LUX at 0.5m, but only 7 000 at 1m a eve less (1 700) at 2 metres and that is without any soft box. Now this Anova does 10 700 LUX at 1M and DOUBLE that as a flash. And it is already a soft ish light. If anybody can show me a light sub 1000£ that can do exactly what this Anova PRO 2 can do, please do so, I need one. But so far no luck. And I totally understand you going for the hype...I am struggling with it every time new camera comes out hahahah

As I haven't followed up on it, since I by mistake bought the neo1:):). My choice would be between AEOS (2pcs) or the Annova Pro2. I think I will hold my horses a little longer regarding LED light, and look elsewhere for new studiolight. I am a strobist, so perhaps try out the Godox system. I agree that those things are very expensive. and not sure i would ever buy one of the bigger units for that's a lot of cash!! I did get the neo 2 and will be seeing how it does in my little studio. but i will be using it along with constant lights, and/or my speed lights. I am not sure you can really compare them triggers though? really depends on the quality of the trigger and how it works. I have a few different triggers and really. them expensive canon rt ones seem to be the ones that i like the best and use all the time. compared to them, the sky port is not really that bad? they look to work about the same? not sure if it is weather resistant though, which for the money, it should be. I also got some way cheaper flashpoint triggers, and of course, they just feel cheap. but for the most part, they work and play nice with my setup. what's your thoughts on the build quality of that sky port? for im thinking about getting one.

When I put the $69 Flashpoint next to the $249. Sky port they feel and look to be the same quality build.
      Both are plastic
both have a backlit screen about the same resolution and both have tactile feeling buttons and the turn dial feels the same on both.
I feel both of them are of equal material and quality it's just your paying for the Name on the Elinchrom Skyport VS the Name GODOX or Flashpoint which is to my point.
But I really don't care about expensive stuff.
I really just want lighter better equipment and less to carry. I do a lot of Location shooting for restaurants and bars and I have to Lug this heavy equipment around and it sucks....
I just want one light that does everything ;-)
      Thanks for stopping by

Strobe flash are close to extinction. Neo 3 and aeos 2 pretty much destroy Strobe flash. I own a ANOVA pro 2 and neo 2 and I will never go back to Strobe. Can't wait for the release of neo 3 and Aeos 2. I don't know why Strobe will even be used.

It really isn't. You just have to limit who you trust. If you don't know the youtuber then it's like trusting a random person on the street. If you have knowledge of the channel then trust them based on your confidence in them as honest people.
I know a bunch of channels that I trust about as far as I can throw them and a bunch that I'd trust in a second. Robert Hall is as solid as they come and I'd recommend trusting him - as an example.

Rotolight’s are amazing you just don’t know what you are doing. I haven’t touched my Ad-600 in 2years. If you spend a little time learning to set the Anova Pro2 up properly it will put out the same amount of light in FLASH mode with no recycle time. Also a replacement battery for your AD-600 is $180.00 and a V-Mount from pro master that fits Rotolight is $165.00, you just didn’t do your homework. I will say in your defense though, when I bought my first Rotolight I was also disappointed because there’s not a real good explanation of setting it up to get the power output and I fought with that for a week but holy smokes when I figured it out I fell in love !!! And yes it will overpower the sun but you have to buy the Anova pro2 at a minimum. BTW Ken wheeler isn’t a photographer by any stretch of the imagination.

to be totally honest, I stopped visiting lanier's site a long time ago. As you say he is a fantastic photographer. I especially like his final results as there is no harshness to his highlights. Also, He demonstrates fantastic rapport with his models as well. They are treated like royalty.
I feel he is a bit if a salesman, which honestly is fine... just something to be aware of.
Mostly, I had some distaste for drama around him ... in his handling of a falling out with 'angry photog'. lanier kind of set angry up when he invited him to video together as a way to offer an olive branch. It was not done gentlemanly. I write this because IMO, he used that visit as a weapon later. (that olive branch offer was less than sincere, and was meant to inflict pain (again, in my opinion) when all was said and done.) There was a kind of mafia-ishness to his strong words said towards angry.
both angry, and lanier are iconic, and have their weaknesses, so be careful of both, because they do present 'hype'. 'Hype is part of the TH-cam photog experience. It is SO EASY to get caught up if you get struck into GAS disease. actually I also partially stopped watching both of them for the GAS reason. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome can lead to extravagant acquisitions that result in either minimal to absolutely NO gains or improvements in end results)
so much can be done with what you already have available to you. Be conservative of the hype. make what little you have 'sing' beautifully! exploit what you've already acquired, while spending when you need so as to minimize disappointments. (wait a day or a week before pulling the trigger and ask ... do I really NEED THIS to be a better photographer? Is a particular 'acquisition' really the difference in my quest for creating art? sometimes it is and then sometimes it is money just burning a hole in my pocket. 'Delayed trigger pulling' can help to see more clearly.

uhm, isn't that angry photog the one that said "your not a professional photographer unless you use strobes" in one of his vids. lmao. there are some pretty good photographers out there that use constant light, and/or natural light. strobes are not the end to all other light sources. disclaimer. @@FrigidNorthAk Angry is easy to poke at, many enjoy suggesting he is overweight. They both have strengths, and they both have weaknesses as each human on this planet has. Take what you will that benefits you from either of them. They each have strengths that may compliment your photography. I've gotten what I want from each, though I like to know more of how Lanier is taming his highlights, If you look at the video they both did together, Lanier's had clear advantage if comparing appearance of final output. Angry's had some blown out highlights that drew attention.

I cannot agree with you sir, I'm on the autistic spectrum and have just congratulated Rodd Gammons at Rotolight for building something so complicated as the Aeos 2 and making it so easy to use. I fear new technology and it can lead to seriously frightening frustrated meltdowns in my home when i don't understand how to's but the Neo aeos and neo's .... a child of 5 could.
As for customer service, i know of none better herein the UK, try this for size.
Late last year i went on a Street walk with master of light Sam Nash around central London and Rodd was bringing some new aeos 2 and neo 3's for use to see and use. he saw me and greeted me by name, the CEO of this multi million pound hi tech British company knew me by name through interactions on the rotolight user Facebook group only, hows that for customer service.
I will concede these points to you, Rotolight kit is expensive, but by choice i have invested in it, it does the job i need it to do BRILLIANTLY, its rugged , reliable, ( i have had stands with aeos fall over outdoors numerous times to no effect), i have lit photoshoots with them and film sets.
No one can force anyone to like and use anything, horses for courses my good man, but now the Aeos 2 and neo 3 are out with there increased power boy are they going to be game changers, what you forgot to mention of course is major British and Italian TV companies light there studio's and shows with Rotolight products ( one even does it with banks of 4 around the set with anova pro's!!....dancing on ice on ITV), let along numerous film companies and producers both sides of the atlantic.
So yes they are expensive compared to some, yes they do lack power to some equipment, but used in the way they are designed for, well in this this humble ex British HM serviceman, who is close to is 65 birthday and autistic they do the job that they say on the box, on the video's and in my my models comments, they seem to love the results and that's what counts.
I am obviously not commenting on price as I'm not qualified to, but what i will say is this , they are built here in Britain, so they are creating British jobs, a huge boost for British technology, so those costs have to be a consideration.
I hope you find what your looking for and when you do let me know , i want to see if is better than Aeos 2 or Neo 3, but i will not take price into consideration as that is purely a personal choice, one that I'm very happy to have exercised.
    Good afternoon Sir.
