I was at that game, 16 years old. I've been to a Super Bowl and Stanley cup finals games and countless other games but this memory is what gives me goosebumps #h2p
Why did Pitt fire Mike Gottfried? Pitt's loss was college football's gain, as ESPN gained one the best color commentators of all time, at least of the 1990's and 2000's
Pitt beat PSU the following year, 14-7. Gottfried was fired because he butted heads with the Pitt administration in 1989 when the school decided to raise academic standards where it made it difficult to admit talented football players. Paul Hackett told the school behind Gottried's back that he could win with those restrictions. Comically, Pitt thought it could become the Stanford of the east. Go look back at Pitt's football records in the 1990s. Only one winning season in 1991 at 6-5. Gottfried should have been Pitt's coach throughout most of the 1990s had he had the support he deserved.
"A true gentleman in college sports" what a joke. He was allowing kids to be sexually assaulted and only cared about protecting the institution of Penn State Football. The program should be dead and burried and never allowed to field a team again.

I had those friggin yellow pom poms they gave out at that game until recently, held on to them for 30 years, breaks my heart I lost them...
That Pitt secondary was great, Billy Owens, Cornell Holloway, Gary Richard and Teryl Austin
Mike Gottfried was building a program, as usual Pitt Administration screwed things up and fired him and promoted OC Paul "I can't" Hackett...

He embarrassed team after losing game to PSU a year later and didn't talk to media. Other problems rumored.
I hate to hear that. He did a great job with ESPN.
