Probably helped that Brian Cox was Scottish as well.. Don't know if he was local at the time because you know how that works lol.. I love that statement though they made, about playing GTA ethically.. I was just thinking about that the other day and I realized I feel like I have less of a problem playing through manhunt, then I do through certainly the modern GTA games ethically.. what they said was not accurate at all lol.. at the very least everybody I'm engaging in this game is more than likely going to commit horrible murders at some point in the future.. Even the cops, especially the cops... Whereas that's not always the case in the GTA game and you don't have any agency over the mission structure.
The final encounter with Piggsy is still one of the most tense, harrowing experiences I've had with a game. Being stalked by a chainsaw-wielding maniac that can pop out anywhere while you're trying to scavenge for weapons and get the drop on him? That just gets the heart pumping.
I love how Manhunt has been getting the attention it deserves lately, not that I expect Rockstar to care but it goes to show that the community for their older titles is still alive and thriving irrelevant of the company's input.
Sadly they can't possibly make a game like this again, with today's graphichs? I don't know how it wouldn't get shot down before it even launched, maybe they could pull it off I'm hoping that they can, Manhunt was cool af back in the day
@@Leandro7470 Last of us 2 is the closest Thing To a ManHunt type game But was no where near as Fucked up as Manhunt2. Last of us 2 kills were pretty quick and more like watching a John wick movie brutal but stylised. Manhunt2 was very really and kills were long and drawn out.
Hell the tech we got now would be intense but with all the shit going on would spark up the same shit back in the old days...is jack thompson still alive?
Back in the day, I actually wrote a snail mail letter to Rockstar to thank them for Manhunt. I got a letter (that didn't seem like a mail merge letter), and a giant Manhunt poster back from them. These days, I can't imagine that Rockstar would give a toss if their playerbase wrote to them.
I remember back in the day they opened an email to take suggestions for GTAO, I remember asking them if we could get a flashlight we could point instead of just having to use weapons and alert NPCs and whatnot, it probably wasn't just me who suggested it, but they did it and it felt nice
The sound design is incredible. Specifically the kills which sound realistic instead of cinematic. The audio really helps you fill in the details that the low res graphics lack with your imagination.
The 2nd game visuals/graphics weren't that great but the AUDIO was disgusting. Truly uncomfortable, it's questionable how Rockstar created those noises. They must have some killer Foley artists, no pun intended
Everyone always says the later levels are just shooting and drops in quality but if you want to get 5 stars on those levels you still have to play them stealthily and execute.
I played this when it came out on a busted old crt TV and I think that it really added to the whole experience. Doom 3 was supposed to be the spooky game at the time but manhunt really took the cake for me.
Most of the story of manhunt is actually in the book in the sleeve of the game. You have to read it front to back to get clues too. My dad loved this game while I was growing up and it is one of the reasons why I don’t like horror games or movies in general. It scared the shit outta me and when I saw this pop up on my timeline, I wanted to see if it still did. Lol
I remember renting it from Blockbuster and playing it for an hour and feeling "ill". I dropped the controller then came back, dropped it, came back. I ended up returning the game early (probably day 3), but about a week later I bought it! I play it every September to get into Halloween mode. I rarely finish it, because it's grotesque. Finally got an HDMI adapter for my ps2 lol.
I watched a video about manhunt about a month ago and I thought to myself, "Damn, I wish Boulder Punch had a manhunt video." What a great day for me to see this, such fuckin happiness bro. I haven't even started it yet but I am so fucking pumped because every video you make is fucking amazing.
Acquired this game in the 6th grade upon release...blew me away. This was right around the time rockstar did the warriors as well, also blew me away. San Andreas came out around the same time, also blew me away. Manhunt is still my personal favorite out of that era though, such a gritty and all around middle finger to everything AAA games stood for, and still does
I'm glad people have been recently praising this game. It's kinda strange that when Rockstar tried to shock, they were so much more effective then this lazy GTA V schlock.
@@SolidRaiden2655 GTA 5 is a game with good graphics, and that took up all the budget and work it seems like. Game is devoid of the fleshed out content that SA had. SA is simply one of a kind, a game from a different age, when Rockstar cared about fun over visuals.
I've been getting a lot of recommended videos lately looking back at the Manhunt series, which is cool. While I doubt Rockstar would ever bother revisiting it, for multiple reasons, it's great to remember what's fittingly the black sheep of their catalogue. I think you're spot on when you mention that there's not much really like Manhunt's horror, very primal. I'd like to see some other studios trying for similar, maybe something like Outlast, but a little more grounded.
I remember the sheer dread I felt the first time I saw the SWAT guys with flashlights in that tunnel. For so long, darkness had been your best friend through the game. Now even the shadows weren’t safe. Really really frustrating mission though.
It’s one of my favorites. It’s a mission you really have to take your time with and master. Same goes for the last three levels with the Cerberus. The Cerberus are a culmination of everything. They start off cocky and funny, and slowly as they start to get picked off they become more erratic 😂😂😂 One of my favorite games of all time.
Regarding the choice of colors for the arrows on the radar my theory is that by making the idle state yellow the player unconsiously feels more tensione given the fact that most of the times it is a color associated with danger in videogames. if it were green the player would relax too much when not seen. That's my interpretation at least since it is a weird color choice of colors
I remember back in 2020 when i first played this game. the piggsy fight in the attic straight up scared the hell out of me. Because how he just jumps out when you least expect it.
Manhunt is a childhood classic its awesome to see people are still playin it, i bought it recently cuz it brings back great memories its a crazy ass thrill ride full of anxiety 💯💯
Great video! Fun fact, I never completed Manhunt BECAUSE of that train/subway station near the end, with all the cops that shoot into the shadows even if they didnt see you go into that specific shadow. it was so frustrating that I never got around to beating it, tho now with this vid im wondering if I should try it again, since i didnt know back then that the Pigsy boss battle came after that
Oh my god, I struggled so hard with that specific scene. It took me about 20 tries until I finally got it. I definitely recommend re-trying if you're willing to.
I am so confused by the Rockstar Employee having a problem with this game. "In GTA You never HAVE to hurt anyone who's not a bad guy." I don't remember Manhunt even having people who weren't bad guys in it that you COULD harm without failing the level you're on. So the game that doesn't let you harm innocents is going to far, but the one that give you the option to gun down pedestrians at a cross walk is ok...
I think what they mean is that you had a choice to kill that pediatrician on the street. In the missions in GTA, through the character’s eyes and to the player, they were the bad guys. Manhunt’s different. You have to kill the gangs in gruesome ways and you get rewarded for it through the director’s praise and score at the end of the level
This game was seriously fun as hell. You honestly felt like you were being hunted which made certain parts really intense. Nothing gave me more anxiety than hiding and having an inmate stop and look right where I'm hiding. I also remember I was 16 and they wouldn't sell it to me. My mom genuinely didn't care and bought it for me.
Played it for the first time last year suprised how great it was. Only thing it needed was more environmental kills. Also playing on Hardcore is the way to go.
Manhunt scenery and dialog makes you feel like you was in the game.. shit felt real when I was a kid.. I was scared of getting caught and the kill sceens gave me nightmares. Plus the music was up there in horror movies
Been playing this game since I was 4 years old ! I've been revisiting it every year since I got it on Steam. The athmosphere, the executions, the camera pov, the music. A nostalgic game for me, a true classic !
@@SSchithFoo I was always taught that games were fake thanks to them. So no, they are not horrible parents. They simply gave me the freedom to enjoy games like these as long as I knew they were not real. Thats good parenting in my book.
The premise of a horror game based on pure, psychopathic reality is genius. I don't think another game has done it. You have the slasher thing where the character is explicitly/implicitly supernatural, and then you have implausible reality like the Purge or whatever, but Manhunt feels like a realistic horror scenario: an immoral person on death row gets cast into a snuff film, but ends up having the brutality to escape. Combined with the desperately bleak art direction and terrifying music, Manhunt is a genius piece of art
Honestly, there are very few games that truly grapple with as dark themes as Manhunt without being exploitative. Manhunt, ironically, is intentionally exploitative. It's grindhouse as it gets. But how many games deal with themes such as snuff, capitalism or capital punishment like Manhunt? I don't think it's a thematically strong game, but without Manhunt, the "games are for kids" sentiment remains. Pretty instrumental in pushing video games from the idea of "nerdy kid" shit to a legitimate art form for adults.

When it comes to the voicelines (not a tragedy) you've left out the lines they say when they actually see you try to enter a shadow. I think the change in pace is well written, and at some point when it gets out of hand, it doesn't make sense to have an army of crazies just hunting you, but the actual force (who will obviously have guns). In terms of being ahead of the curve in terms of a cover system, Metal Gear Solid 2 beat it by a few years and Operation Winback even more from the N64.
Although it's one of my least favorite levels cuz of that damn crane section, Fuelled by Hate had probably the best soundtrack in the game. Utter desolation, fear, hopelessness. The Skinz have awesome dialog too

Used to get Nightmares from this game. Had dreams i was cash being chased by pigsy
Lmaooo i thought i was the only one
All the reviews I’ve seen of this game I had no idea you could use heads as a distraction ..
That’s awesome never knew it was Logan Roy as director in this game lol “oh fuck off”
In terms of being ahead of the curve in terms of a cover system, Metal Gear Solid 2 beat it by a few years and Operation Winback even more from the N64.
@BIG DICK ClUTCH the two games I mentioned beat splinter cell to it.
Manhunt remake wheeeeeeen? aaaaaaaaaaaa
How tf am I supposed to be sane with Logan Roy’s voice in my ear egging me on to get more extravagant kills?!?!
a little something about the first game my mother literally had nightmares from that shit when she saw my older brother playing it.
solid game though
Although it's one of my least favorite levels cuz of that damn crane section, Fuelled by Hate had probably the best soundtrack in the game. Utter desolation, fear, hopelessness. The Skinz have awesome dialog too
Is this a re-upload?
