@@lapierro yes. And he didn't demand 11 million dollars in doing so either. Marner is a ego driven cancer. Let's do nothing in the playoffs with him on the team
It’s not that he’s a bad player or that we don’t want him to succeed, It’s that they (Matthews, Nylander, Marner) have hand cuffed the team where one of them has to go because we can afford them.
It's become hard to diagnose exactly what the problem is in Toronto - is it the players? The fans? Management? Alignment of the stars? Who knows. But regardless of the issues, I will never take anyone who says Marner is a bad player seriously. Is he worth his contract, especially in the playoffs? Probably not. But he's a stellar talent in his own right, at the very least for the first 82 games.
It's been a management issue. It was ownership in the 70s and 80s, in 90s and 00s they just either hit bad luck or made bad moves. The key thing has been a lack of a quality defense and a true star goalie or a great tandem. Marner is a team player, even when he doesn't score he is a great checker. You need to have that with grit and skill throughout your lineup, Nylander may score, but back checking is something he doesn't do willingly. Depth has been an issue also, they need those quality depth guys to pitch in. Often it is those guys that you need to back up the big stars.
thank you!! I've said this so many times lately when people ask about the hate for Marner.. sure, there are some people who will hate the guy but I think it's because like you say, he hasn't earned the contract. For me, I want him to be traded or gone ONLY because it's addition by subtraction. Leafs have committed to Matthews and Nylander. JT will be gone, most likely or at the very least, signed at a huge discount which I doubt he'll do if he knows he can still get good coin from another team. Leafs fans know that the narrative has to change. Leafs have committed to this core year after year and promised that " they can win and will win with this group". Committed to this core all the while neglecting other important areas of the roster. In order to fix this mess, they have to clear cap space and the only way to do that, is to deal Marner or let him walk this off season. It's gonna suck, that will be a huge hole to fill but in order to fix this team, in order to ice a more complete line up, they have to clear space and serious space. If JT walks and Marner is either traded or walks, that's over $20 million in space created. I don't know who they get to fill the roles of those guys, but at least they'd have $$ to do so ..
Since the start of the 2019-2020 season, Marner has averaged 1.24 points per game(102 per season pace) putting him at 8th in that stat. Top 10 ppg = one of the best players in the game. In open market free agency next year, no one should be surprised if many teams offer him well north of 12 million per year for 7 years. Players like him are scarce, and rarely become available on the market at that.
Nathan MacKinnon can have him. Way over paid for 6 years for what he does. Best at what? Not a goal scorer. Domi can get his points if he played with top 3. Marner Plays on the periphery. come on guys!
When you say "one of the best players," are we talking top five? If so, no, because McDavid, MacKinnon, Makar, Matthews, and Kucherov would fill that list out. I would also say that he's not better than Barkov, Pastrnak, Panarin, and Draisaitl. Do I think it's an interesting discussion between him and a lot of other players after that? Definitely. I think he's an outstanding two-way forward. He thinks hockey at a very high level. He plays well in all three zones. He kills penalties. He's an agile skater who gets to good areas of the offensive zone. He's an excellent passer. His shot has improved since he entered the league. Any team would want him.
Since the start of the 2019-2020 season, Marner has averaged 1.24 points per game(102 per season pace) putting him at 8th in that stat.
