For a long straight cut, never look at where your cutting, look at where you want to end up. It will result in a cleaner, straighter cut.

I have been sewing (off and on) since I was 6 (my mom was a seamstress). But, your sewing tips bring me back to my early years of learning.
I even helped a dear friend of mine learn to sew and she is real good at it now. I watch you so much…(mostly on my tv) that I have made a lot of outfits (😢😅😂 in my dreams).
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. You are the GOAT of sewing and I’m here for it.

Yes cutting is important. Also it's better to leave extra seam allowance then trim if you need to get rid of that extra fabric. Also you should be cutting with the pattern pieces on the inside of your hand & keep it consistent. It will add extra fabric & changes the fit of your clothing.

Yes, as a beginner you want to follow rules to the "T" to ensure better results. Once you've become a bit more advanced, then you will learn where you can make some exceptions. It isnt easy, but it will make you a better seamstress in the long run, and that makes all the hard work 💖😊 completely worth it💖💯

Thanks for this video ( knowing that I am not alone) . I teach at my church’s CDC and was totally surprised at the need to have an in depth lesson on cutting straight and sewing with consistent seam allowances.. like in depth😃and how they fought me on pressing from beginning to end😩😉..

I sew and also do machine embroidery, besides pins, I use Temporary Spray Adhesive to hold down my patterns. It can be purchased at the notions/sewing departments of the craft store.

Quilt rulers aren't just for quilts! I've got 18" and 24" rulers that I use for the straight edges more than anything but they are also handy for smoothing out fabric simply by extending my reach.

When I want a straight line or cut, I use my quilter's ruler and my rotary cutter. When cutting WOVEN stripes and plaids (not printed stripes and plaids) make use of the woven lines in the fabric to cut straight lines. In Home Economics we were taught to never close our cutting SHEARS blades completely, to keep from making jagged cut lines. If the shirt, or other garment is new or almost new, use a seam ripper to open the seams; and, PRESS (not iron) to prevent stretching the fabric. No, I am not a sewing police officer.

If it’s really important to cut straight and on the grain, I pull a thread and cut on the line where it goes missing.

1.) Bigger is better. (The compact one's are small, but will take you like, 5 years to iron a yard, lol).
2.) I like the teflon ones over the stainless steel one, but it comes down to personal preference.
3.) And for me, it must have steam.
      - I hope that helps some. There are a lot of good irons on the market now a days . . .

      - Hey, "ANY" iron is WAAAY better than "NO" iron ! 😉
      - At first I had a "hand-me-down" iron, than I got a "up grade" at a second hand store, then I was at W***mart, and I was inspired by the large selection, that I purchased "the perfect match" for me . . . (this one has a larger water capacity, so I don't have to refill it like, after 3 sprays, lol)
. . and now when I iron, I'm not using "the iron", instead I'm using "MY PERFECT IRON", lol, I know that it's only psychological, but I do enjoy ironing a lot more than I use too . . .
      . . . just sayin' 😉

I Been using a cheap iron for years.
They ALL get hot enough to iron perfectly. You may get a higher Quality with a brand name. But your paying for a name.i got my iron at the thrift store a few bucks. Save that money for materials.

Another good tip: slow down!! Don’t sew on the highest speed if you want straight hems and lines. Having to do this myself lol I’m working on a pair of leggings and this requires a lot of zigzag stitching. I usually sew on my highest speed but now I’m doing medium. It’ll also prevent skipped stitches too
