  • Learning how to use your rotary cutter and cut fabric is one of the most intimidating parts of sewing. Let me walk you through the basics.
I go even more in depth about cutting fabric on my post here: www.sewwhatali...

Thank you so much for this video!!
I have been sewing for 50 yrs, but mostly clothes (& masks). Only now starting bags & quilts, where straight edges on the ends REALLY matter.
I’ve seen many videos where they tell you to “square up” the fabric, & then just trim off a sliver.
No one has ever explained lining up the selvedge with a line on the mat, then lining up the ruler lines with the mat lines!!
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to make the video & explain things so thoroughly!!

Thank you so much for this video! I was cutting fabric with scissors (unsuccessfully) and knew nothing about this cutter. Thank you thank you

Thank you for doing this video! I could never cut a straight line. I actually was cutting out a template out for cardboard.. Then when I would use the rotary cutter, I would be cutting the cardboard! Now I know the right way.

Your tripod method works!!! Thank you so much! I don't know why I didn't think to trim the bad ends to make perfect squares...lol. I was struggling to cut perfect squares, but not anymore! Both of these tips helped.

How do you get the top line straight if you have already cut in to a piece of fabric?

I'm new & don't have big nice hunks of store bought fabric....just small scraps ppl have given me. I get so confused just trying to cut a 9: square of of say an 11 by 13" piece of scrap that when I'm done it's like cutting bangs....nothing much left! haha. I get how to get a straight side but something is missing in my brain about where to go from there. Should be easy peasy I know. It's hard to explain. Thanks for this & I will check out your vids today

I believe it’s for left and right handed. I am left handed and use it left handed.

Hi there, a rottary cutter is on my list of things to get, meantime, is there anything better than a pair if scissors that would work? Thanks for the informative video.

There are tools that help you cut but they are all more expensive than a rotary cutter. The rotary cutter is really the best option.

Absolutely you can. A very sharp pizza cutter for a fraction of the cost will do the trick!

Leia Card I totally agree with you. Some people babble when they’re being recorded, maybe because of nerves. Maybe she was explaining about the features of her ruler in the event you’re able to find the same features on another one. I learned a lot from this video. I can’t stand when people make completely rude or unnecessary comments. Now I’m babbling :)

That's the part I need to see...when the edges are straight already from the store it isnt hard but if I cut it then it's a hot mess

    • @corau4021

I used to assume the edges on a Fat Quarter were straight, but finding often the edges are a little wonky.
