Hey Scotty. I got a '99 Plymouth Neon Expresso from my dad. We can't figure out what needs fixing. It's a 5 speed. Idles all day no problem but when you drive it will usually die if you take it out of gear and idle coming to a stop. It always starts right back up though. Also it occasionally loses all power sporadically when driving down the road as if the ignition system shuts off for a second. This lasts anywhere from a tenth of a second to a couple of seconds. Sometimes it happens 10 or 20 times in a row sometimes it doesn't happen for 20 minutes straight. Also the speedometer and odometer barely work but it has a few other electrical issues with power locks and sunroof but I dont think that's related. Any ideas, champ?

I drove a gasoline transport for 10 years. Where I loaded, there were 2 facilities (loading racks), both brand names companies. They sat side by side. I know for a fact that I could get major name fuel products from either facility. The only difference in products are the additives that are added to the fuel. The additives are put in the different brands of fuel at the loading facilities, not at the refineries.

First thing I want to say is thank you Scotty for making such informative and fun to watch videos. Next I always do MPG checks almost every tank. My experience is that some companies gas gives me better gas mileage then others. Maybe the additives react better in my type of vehicle. I'm not really sure why but that is my experience and I have checked it many times over. Doing multiple tanks in a row. So in this case I would have to disagree and say that they are not all equal. These are my results for my car and my experience.

  • @newfie-dean5803

What you need to watch out for is the infrastructure of the gas station itself. If you go to some places with old tanks the gas you’re getting could be crap. It’s best to be selective and buy gas from a well kept station. When I lived in the USA I had to replace a fuel filter as it was clogged on a car only a couple of years old. I was told that it was because I was buying gas from stations with poor tanks. After that I started buying only chevron gas with techron from nice gas stations and I never had such an issue after that, spending another 4 years in the USA. So I’m convinced that it matters where you buy your gas at.

A coworker of mine drives tanker truck on the side. He tells me all the gas in southern Nevada and Utah comes in throught one (not 3, not 2 ) pipeline from southern California to Las Vegas. He takes the tanker truck to the terminal. The only difference is when he fills up the tanker truck is he sticks in a credit card for the brand of gas station he is going to. It will then a that brands additives. So Shell, Chevron, Maverick is all the same gas the only difference is the additives that are added when the tanker truck gets filled up.

The gasoline you buy has, in almost every circumstance, been shipped on a common carrier pipeline before it gets to you. Common carrier means just what it sounds like - everybody and anybody can use it. Since all the gas from various refiners mixes together in the pipeline, it has to be completely fungible/chemically identical in order to be shipped to you on those pipelines. The individual companies dump some detergent additives into the tanker trucks that are proprietary, but they all do the same thing. Does that mean all gasoline stations are identical? Interestingly, no. You want to buy gas from a clean, well-maintained and busy gas station. If the things you can see are clean and well-maintained, probably so are the fuel filters, underground tanks etc. that you can't see. And since gas slowly goes bad over time, you don't want to buy from a station that is rarely resupplied, particularly if you have a car that requires premium gas.

EXACTLY! Only one co. has an exclusive line, all the rest are the same line/tank. The driver press's a code in a keypad to add the additive's. A dye is added for non-highway use because of the taxes. I know one driver that forgot to add the dye on a ld for a Coast Guard ice breaker in Michigan and had to pay the road taxes.
It used to be that the southern fuel had higher paraffin than fuel in the north and would play hell with truck's going north in the winter. Now it's all pretty much the same except for state's that allow ethanol in the gas, which is better in the winter than summer.

+Frank Gutowski ... actually there is no federal mandate's on ethanol. There's only 7states that had a mandate I last knew. The Fed's regulate the allowed amount and at present are trying for an E15 for all vehicle's.
You are right about the ethanol being added at the terminal due to it's water solubility, it wouldn't make the trip from the refinery. Butanol however can and is mostly blended in at the refinery.
Some state's require labeling for ethanol at the pump and some don't, buyer beware.

For some reason this starts off about gasoline (and stations) then just drifts away .... ONLY the info on gasoline is WRONG. Top Tier is a standard set by the EPA which designates gasoline that has certain additives which are actually proven to keep the engine parts cleaner - and hence less polluting - hence endorsed by the EPA as a standard. Using Top Tier gas will not only keep your engine cleaner but will give you better mileage - due to that cleanliness. You will generally pay a few cents more for TopTier - except at Costco. Just sayin'.....

Not all the gasoline end products are the same. Not all stations are the same. You get what you pay for.
    Here's why I say this.
I spent almost 15 years in the fuel station business and worked for corporate brands and independent brands.
The corporate stations have regulations on fuel dispenser maintenance, whereas most independents do not. There are filters on the fuel dispensers that need to be changed at regular intervals. Have you ever been pumping has and noticed it going very slowly? Chances are the filter was clogged and not filtering the dirt out of the fuel going into your car.
The expensive stations change the filters at regular intervals instead of waiting for the dispenser to slow down.
Also the expensive stations monitor the ethanol content and don't allow it to exceed 10% whereas the cheap stations have been tested as high as 30%!
I could go on and on about this

      @@vwmbvwmb8830
In the Southwest I would say 76, Chevron, Shell, and Mobil. In other words, the name brand, more expensive stations.
But there are variables there too. Is it a privately owned franchise station or a corporate station? Some private owners may skimp on the dispenser maintenance and may thin the gas down with more ethanol than they are allowed. You can buy ethanol test kits online.
At my job we found some stations as high as 35%!

Scotty is correct in saying that all base gasoline's are the same but where gasoline's differ are the additive packages.I have found in my personal vehicles for example.. I have an older van... if I run an unbranded gas in that van and I step on it like I have to get going really quick it will ping like crazy.. but if I run Chevron or Shell gas and drive in a similar fashion it doesn't ping at all..so I believe that the additive packs burn differently within the engine which makes these fuels different I've also logged on average about 2 mile per gallon difference between unbranded gases and top tier fuels and that's over many miles tested over the years.... So for me? Shell and Chevron are with every penny.

    • @johnboy3419

    • @eppyz
      @eppyz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@johnboy3419 I realize this but that was YEARS ago I'm talking right now. If I go fill up with unbranded gas down the street from my house that is .10 cents a gallon cheaper than the Shell or Chevron I usually use my van will ping under hard acceleration vs with Shell or Chevron it doesn't. So yes the base line gas is the same but the additive packs play a HUGE role in how that gas performs. It's very noticeable in my van. My other cars won't ping but don't get as good of mileage.. usually 1-2 mpg's less. So for that extra 10 cents a gallon? It's worth it to me to have my cars working at peak efficiency.

Sometimes in life you have to find a happy medium... F*** that I'm glad it's out.. but you've got me thinking now the whole talcum powder scare they've switched to cornstarch based powders which don't work the same doesn't provide exactly the same anti-friction benefits and such although I will say in certain applications I think the cornstarch formulas are better but nothing compares to talcum and you can still buy talcum online and maybe some stores. When I was a Rodbuster we did a job in Georgia at a refinery and distribution plant and all day long we seen 20 different company’s trucks come fill up from the same tank. Only thing different was the octane rating one hose said 87 one said 93 and they mixed the two to get the medium grade and these trucks all had Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida tags on them so I seen first hand they all get it from the same hose then take it to their station and stick there name on it. Makes we wonder why in Kentucky where I live the places that are closer to the distribution center can charge as much as .50 cents more for the same gas there not even shipping it as far it should be cheaper. Maybe they don’t buy as much and get charged more or maybe their just crooks.

gas is fungible. Americans don't realize that 90% of the gas in this country travels by common' carrier pipeline. The gas you get could have come from any of a dozen refineries owned by various energy companies. Shell deposits 1m gallons into the pipe. Shell withdraws 1m gallons of Exxon at the terminal in NC under their name, sells it as their product. Any differences like the 'Techron' additive is placed in the trucks at the terminal.

Wrong Scotty.. Shell regular gasoline is better than a non top tier regular gasoline because it contains Shells proprietary additives that keep your engine cleaner.. Shell refines gasoline it sells to lots of different companies but that gas only has the required additives mandated by the Govt.. Shell adds their own additives that they sell at Shell branded stations. Same goes for Exxon/Mobil, Chevron , BP etc.. The company i work for makes and tests additives for these companies....If you are putting a low tier gasoline in your car from a supermarket or convenience store that is non branded than you are using a lower quality gas which is the reason it is usually 5 to 10 cent cheaper per gallon.

So don’t tell me I buy she’ll because it’s better because let me tell you it’s not and if it is it just ends up getting mixed in with the shitty gas and the storage facility.

    • @simplecarnivore
      @simplecarnivore 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey Scotty, I have a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE Turbo, exactly like the one you showed in the picture. Here are some points to note:
    1. The example shown was a Saab engine model. The model that replaced it was a modified GM car with a GM engine (I own one of those too). It was during this full-on GM era that they went bust for lack of investment.
    2. I am right now rebuilding the engine of my 2007 (GM) Saab 9-3 because it had valve wear problems and was starting to misfire. It has done 100k miles. When I opened it up I found the mechanicals to be good but a heavy layer of carbon on the pistons - which I cleaned off. In reassembly (with a replacement cylinder head) I will add a pair of catch cans (FCV and Vent) to avoid this happening again.
    3. For the older Saab, these are very sound and can give 350k trouble free miles. But you need to be aware of the PCV/blowback modification designed to avoid oil leaks when blowback pressure gets too high, which basically has the excess blowback cycled straight out of the crankcase via the dipstick channel into the intake manifold. This ridiculous mod means a) high oil consumption and b) heavy contamination of engine and oil. I am fixing this now by adding a ventilated catch can to the modified blowback circuit and a sealed catch can to the standard, closed loop PCV circuit. After this I don't expect any problems as the car is very well built and reliable.

The driver of the tanker told me that the major companies get first pick of the fuel for their tankers and the smaller providers get the stuff towards the bottom of the tank. Hi Scotty, I just bought my mom a 1999 Lincoln Continental with 78k original miles on it. The car runs well and is in very nice condition. I wanted to change out the transmission fluid. Should I have it flushed, or simply drained and refilled with a new filter?

Hey Scotty, what do you do with old car parts that aren’t useful anymore? Like old Strut Assemblies?
