Vaughan Williams! (Random Reviews from the Overflow Room)

  • There was a time when I became rather obsessed with Vaughan Williams' music, as you can plainly see. In particular, I was amazed that a composer who was so prolific, communicative, and often inspired could be so little known, relatively speaking. At least he was generously recorded.

    Thanks Dave for another splendid talk - one can never have enough RVW - seems like your collection of this great composer completely mirrors my own! Happy Birthday and thanks a million for all you do to promote an interest in the wonderful world of classical music. Oh, and the occasional visitations by Finster and Mildred are additional delightful bonuses!

    Happy Birthday - your recommendations have changed my life and buckled my shelves. Eternally grateful. Apropos RVW Karajan conducted the Tallis Fantasia three times in the 1970s - I would love to know if anyone has a tape if it was broadcast.

    Happy Birthday! I had a similar experience with Vaughan Williams. Once I moved beyond the familiar Fantasia by buying some CDs with other music-symphonies, Job, the great choral works, etc. I thought two things: 1. Why is this music so relatively unknown? 2. I must have everything he ever wrote. Along these lines, I was pleased and not surprised to see that you had some RVW CDs that I don’t! That’s probably rare, but not surprising for you to eclipse us all. Too bad that probably at least some of the older ones are both out of print and not available on streaming either. But I will look.

    No better way to celebrate your birthday than with the great RVW! Yasher Koach. This is a composer I never tire of exploring, and happily great new film scores and the like keep getting recorded and issued.

    Gotta love RVW. I have a particular affection for that rare Stokowski recording of the Tallis Fantasia, coupled with Dvorak's String Serenade, since that coupling was my first introduction to both pieces, on a prerecorded cassette from the late '70's. When EMI reissued it briefly on CD I wasted no time to get ahold of it. It remains a cherishable recording.

      I don't remember hearing it myself, but I'm pretty sure Catelinet/Barbirolli (the recording named in this video) were the artists who premiered it, for anyone who cares about the "historical" performances.

    A really impressive overflow! Do you have more RVW in the overflow or in the permanent collection?
    Minor RVW discography trivia: The Thomson Symphony cycle is only one issued with one Symphony per disc plus couplings. Every other one includes at least one issue in which there's two Symphonies per disc (this includes the original LP issues). Decca didn't release Symphony 9 in its Boult series, so that technically doesn't count.

    • @fred6904
      @fred6904 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know that Adrian Boult's cycle on EMI recorded between 1967 and 1971 was released whith one symphony per disc on lp, at least in Europe.

    Dear Dave, that’s an impressive collection of Vaughan Williams only from your overlflow room! I have a question. I agree with you that Hickox’ (unfinished) and Haitink’s RVW cycles are not totally great as cycles, but I happen to like Hickox’ no. 4 very much and really love Haitink’s no. 6. It made me think of Rattle’s Sibelius cycle from Birmingham which I also think is not very recommendable as a cycle, but to my ears Rattle presses all the right buttons in no. 5. And I was very impressed by Bychkov’s Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony on Decca whereas the symphony cycle that followed I found disappointing. Maybe you totally disagree with me, but could there be a series in Singleton Hits from Flawed Cycles?

    Hi Dave. I never get tired of your reviews. This may be a bit off topic, but, would you consider doing a review of symphony or opera performances on DVD? Listening is great, but, having the visual component gives me a higher level of enjoyment. Thank you for all you do.😊
