  • Just like we talked about Steph quitting her job - Den did too! Today he's talking about what it's like quitting a big 4 consulting job, why he quit, what it was like interviewing for other companies in industry, what the quitting process was like, and what it was like overall working in big 4 consulting - the good, bad and ugly.

      At my previous office, employees had to personally hand in their resignation letters, which is really difficult, in that there is bound to be that "awkward" conversation, where you say, "it's not you, it's me". So awkward for me. I was trying to strike the right balance between being respectful towards my mentor and being firm in my decision making.
      Will never forget this.

      My interview for my current job (have had this job for almost a year now) was super laid back and kind of funny. My boss knew he was going to hire me based off my resume and basically just wanted to have a conversation with me. He asked me things like "do you know your alphabet?" and "do you smoke?" Among a couple professional questions. I thought it was super weird at the time. But he is a very reputable boss and I'm very happy to be working for him. 😊

      @@megs2710able That's definitely an awkward experience! With my (Steph here) first experience quitting, I had to call my boss because I wasn't going to be in the office at the same time as her for over a week. She wasn't expecting it and I was so nervous, so there was some awkwardness that time!

    After I resigned from Deloitte, I literally left the country for 2 years. I spent a year backpacking. Then I worked in Africa for a year. I only came back after I got a raging case of malaria. So believe me, I get it.
    I also waited for my bonus to drop before I sent my resignation. I was so happy! Several other people did the same, because multiple resignations happened around that time.

  • @marcoattanasi4878
    @marcoattanasi4878 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Hey Den!
    I found what you said regarding your interview with Better to be very compelling because you felt the interviewer wasn't prepared and was cold. I interviewed for a position at CIBC recently and felt the same thing i.e. reading from a script and overall just being disingenuine. You know when someone smiles at you but you can tell it's not real? Like in Mean Girls haha.
    Another point you brought up was how you decided to stay longer at Deloitte to secure that performance bonus. When I decided to leave my corporate role at the end of July, I knew that if I stayed till year end, I would secure my bonus for 2021. Full transparency, my 2020 bonus was $15k gross and I was guaranteed that my 2021 bonus would be higher if I stayed. Anyways, I had to make a call and the big question I asked myself was, "Is $15k or $20k worth my sanity? What price tag would I put on it?"
    I loved that you brought up how Deloitte has basically been your second home for the past three years. I was at my workplace, Noble, for three years as well in a management role straight out of university. Although I'm three years older than you and Steph (I think.. you two are 25, right?), those three years were still very formative years for me. I'm still very close to a lot of the senior leadership team and other employees there and they watched me grow up in some big ways. Having said that, it was sad to leave because of the connections and memories I had created, however, like you, Den, I was really excited to explore new options and see where this new passion for personal finance would take me.
    That sucks that you didn't have the same experience as Steph regarding how your ex-coworkers reacted to your departure. Fortunately, I had a very similar experience to Steph. At least you're your own boss now and can treat yourself however you want! :P
    Anyways, I'm really happy for you two and that you've both taken this big step in your lives. Happiness and health and both of you.
    All my best.

    So just a few points, aside from these very insightful and good video!
    The "stamp of Deloitte" only means something if you 1. have multiple years of experience or 2. have experience as a manager level + at Deloitte.
    Most people who are career-minded start their careers as senior consultants or higher at Deloitte to work their way up through things like fast track etc.
    I'm not sure what made you decide to leave to then try get a job with a different company seems like the very long way to handle this.
    That being said, great on you to cut a higher possible income for something you're passionate for.

      Hey Gareth! We see the likelihood of making more than our previous incomes in the near future by continuing to grow our channel - we could’ve waited until we were at that point to quit, but can hopefully make that happen even quicker with more time put in. We’ll keep you updated with the channel as always 😊 also - we do make enough money now to afford to do this, so we aren’t moving backwards by any means. Hope that makes sense!

    Hey, I'm currently studying a Level 3 Business BTEC in the UK ( a college course if you're not familiar with our education system - I'm 17). The BTEC qualification is a relatively new one, that focusses on a more practical method of teaching. For example, coursework makes up half of my overall grade with exams taking the other half. This style of education has made me think that University might not be for me, instead I'm thinking of applying for a apprenticeship scheme with one of the big four where I can get professional qualifications while getting paid and bypassing university. I'm not sure if you're familiar with these schemes but if so, do you think apprenticeship schemes are a good alternative to University? if yes, can you think of anything that university offers that these apprenticeships don't/vice versa? I'm just in dire need of advice because careers advisors in my college only seem to know about university routes :(

    • @vavavoom3661
      @vavavoom3661 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I’m finishing my masters at uni of surrey and I would recommend you do a degree apprenticeship. If you can’t do that then try and get into an elite uni. A normal apprenticeship is also fine.

    Totally need to ditch those companies that are late and have bad attitude. Back in my college years, a PwC recruiter seeking candidates for my home country was super late (for all the interviewees) and asked weird questions, especially questioning me why does everyone want to go to HK office... I meant it’s a choice of us ... why all the judgment. In terms of the the job position filled out already, that happened to me from one big four too so it’s like industry trend

    • @omshanti5182
      @omshanti5182 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are various types of Visa. As they mentioned, the hardest part is getting the job with the US firm while having a Canadian work background. It gets harder for people in fields like accounting because the US uses GAAP and Canada uses ASPE and IFRS. I did the reverse, graduating from a US university, worked there for 1 year then moved to Canada on a closed work permit to work for a Canadian employer. Good luck!

  • @Catherinnahq

    Congratulations on making your move! Could you share why quitting is the better choice for yourselves?
    I had been applying to big firms in the past months, and it was a roller coaster of emotions. Got into the final round of interviews after months of applying, only to get a rejection. I know starting my own business is logically the better choice in the long run, but I have FOMO for not having trained at a big firm. Could you help out with my FOMO? Hahaha but thank you guys for always being so cool and real

    • @stephandden
      @stephandden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you 😊 For us, it’s because we’re leaving to build our own business, do something we love that’s more impactful, and we see the opportunity for more income over a shorter period of time than our prior jobs (to name a few!). Totally can relate to that feeling of a roller coaster of emotions while applying - it can be a journey. It’s really up to what you want to do and what works best for you - if you plan to leave the big firms after a few years anyways and feel like you could start your own business now then go for it! On the other hand, if you have a plan on what you’ll gain from working at a firm first than keep pushing for that path - we’re sure you’ll make it happen. We hope that helps 🙌🏿🙌🏻
