I am a female MMA fighter and my uncle was an amateur boxer he told me two british boxers who never won world titles but should have been world champions were colin jones and herol graham he idolised them both and now I follow them and watch their fights - they are both amazing
As an amateur boxer in S Wales at the time Colin was about, nobody in britain could match his punching power.....he may not have been skilful, but he had the things that counted.....Guts,Stamina.....and a KO punch!! Top Respect!!
I used to have both Laing fights on VHS and I remember a BBC2 series called 100 Great Sporting Moments which featured both KOS….. Colin Jones still my favourite British boxer ever
when it comes to boxing , and this is just an opinion , i think the bygone days were far better to watch , in every division, there just doesn't seem to be many fighters to make you sit up and take notice , as for Jones and Laing , both superb fighters , and anybody who fights even up to national level really deserves credit . i have been embroiled in arguments about this and that boxer , then just think wtf, if they are both British whoever wins even if not my choice , still deserves our backing ,if people don't want to , thats their choice and i accept that to .
Thanks for this. I thought Colin had amazing power, determination, and a great chin. Very unlucky to have lost to McCrory (I thought he won at least the first fight and possibly the second) and only cuts ended his career. One of my all time favourites
What great fighters they were, one puncher one boxer, punch against brain ,heart against chin, man against man in its most primal form, fucking hard stuff.
i lived in hackney where kirk lived,he now is an alcholic, drug ravaged man, when u ask him of duran fight and winning titles u might as well talk like a teletubbie.we used to see him train as a kid and such a lovely warm man,its a sad shame.
I was a 15 yr old lad in 1980 and Colin was a hero of mine. The Laing fights were great. I met him briefly a few years ago at a boxing event in Cardiff, lovely man. As Hard As They Come as Boxing Monthly put it.
Such a great fight. It's so like life, all that fancy showing off, appearing to be battered by Laing, but Jones just bided his time and just "dropped him" right at the end of the fight! Fair play Col, one of the greatest.
Both very gifted fighters , and like Eubanks and benn , hearns and Leonard ,etc.. They were lucky to have been around in the same era.they defined each other as fighter ,gifted in each owns way ,no losers here.
Very interesting documentary. I'd love to see more on Jones. He seems a nice guy. I was a Curry fan and was a bit nervous that those same corkers he hit Laing with were going to land on Curry. That was a prime Curry though and Jones was just a bit unlucky to catch him at the wrong time.
Commentator: "It's almost Mohammed Ali exhibition stuff" Two seconds later, the 'Mohammed Ali' fake got smashed - and in the return, he was dumb enough to allow himself to be stopped again in the same ninth round lol
Stopped to early,,But KL Was his own worse enemy,,What he could of achieved with disapline we,ll never know,,two great boxers anyway and a great bout ,,
Colin Jones just kept on moving forward and wouldn't give up! Colin Jones soaked up some punishment, but at the end of day he caught Kirkland with a good punch and won the fight. Kirkland always tended to carry his left low, leaving himself wide open for a right-hander, but his reflexes usually got him out of trouble! The only problem being that the longer a fight went the more tired he became, so his reflexes were just that bit slower!!
My uncle Kirkland Laing is gud boxer he beat dran which he could not believe him self yes he his the gifted one it was upset of the year unfortunately got push of his home belcony of Hackney London lost his memory den his grandson got stabbed to death in Nottingham st Ann’s rubean Morris Laing 21 year old
Was his gum shield knocked out at 7:08 Jesus Christ, Laing didn't half take it like a champ. Not many would still be standing after that onslaught in the ninth.
Jones was a very tough fighter, could absorb a lot of punishment; a slow starter but with a big punch- he dominated the second half of each world title fight in the US with McCrory, after being outboxed in the first, similar to the Laing fights.
But this was no fluke, or lucky one shot; it happened to Laing again with Jones- Jones was a slow starter but would get to more skilful boxers in the second half of fights. He had McCrory in all sorts of trouble for the world title, after being well behind on points in the first half. Jones was tough, determined and had a superb punch, difficult to keep off for the full distance.
Yes, Peerless Jim Driscoll for sure- world champ in all but name, only the different system for gaining the title stopped his officially holding it. Certainly one of the 10 greatest British fighters, so obviously the best not to be official world champ. Too many "experts" seem to forget boxing history
true, far from average but Laing took a beating for nigh on 26seconds without reply and still didnt go down. deffinalty the best british fighter not to be world champion imo
@24dcambridge Jones did exactly the same to him again. Jones was a relentless fighter, far from the most skilful boxer, often a slow starter but then would often get to opponents later and had a tremendous punch, especially left hook. In the world title fights v McCrory, he was being outboxed each time for the first half and then came on very strong in the second half. So this stoppage of Laing was hardly a one-off slice of luck
Most boxing fans have probably never heard of Berg and Ted Kid Lewis, who was undoubtedly one of the very best of British. That's the problem- same with other sports, youtube is full of recent heroes at the expense of greats of the past. Even in Wales most sports fans have never heard of Jimmy Wilde. The media don't help, with comments about Joe Calzaghe being obviously the best from Wales.
Pair of British boxing legends - if only Laing had Jones's detemrination, durability & grit and Colin had Laing's natural ability, even Sugar Ray would have been in trouble. I was 8 years old when these fights took place and made me interested in boxing. Jones beat McCrory twice IMO. Curry beat Jones on cuts. Honeyghan battered Curry. What fight 1983 Jones v 1986 Honeyghan - Jones by late TKO IMO
Actually the last I heard of him was Steve Bunce doing a a spot on him a couple of years ago when he was said to be homeless and alcoholic and having suffered some kind of fall or something-a real shame as he was truly 'the gifted one'-til he met Jones that is...
Yes, Wales certainly has had the greatest British boxer, the incredible Jimmy Wilde. And others among the very best of British- Calzaghe, Freddie Welsh, Jim Driscoll, Howard Winstone... Even little-known Joe Erskine beat Henry Cooper twice- the ref saved Cooper's career in their 3rd fight, when Cooper should have been disqualified for a punch when Erskine got up from a slip, then one after the bell. Tommy Farr put up a fine effort v Joe Louis and Wales has had many world champs.
Yep,Tony is certainly a gifted young man as well as being a nice lad-as is his Dad Terry-also a Brookside boy as I suspect you are Regreggy me old mate!
Lloyd Honeygan beat the pound 4 pound best fighter of the time in Don Curry who nocked out Milton McCrory in 2 rounds who Colin Jones couldn't beat in 2 fights . Jones was the best in Europe in his day but Honeyghan won the undisputed crown TWICE and made several defences . John H Stracey also reigned as undisputed welterweight champ . But on statistics and ability Ted Kid Lewis is not only the best british welter but maybe the best pound 4 pound british fighter ever
people say Laing was the greatest British boxer to never win a world title, i"ve heard Herol Graham mentioned as well. but surely peerless Jim Driscoll holds that mantle, there is even a staue of the great man in Cardiff.
@copperpotbaby He was never "Britains greatest talent ." A very good fighter, yes, but not great. He woulsdn't have lost here if he was THAT good (he also lost the rematch).
@copperpotbaby He beat a battle-worn Duran, a Duran that didn't take Laing seriously and was pretty much finished by this time (look at his record post-fight). Laing in this fight just wasn't as tough as Jones...... I suppose Lewis was in a poor division for 10 years?? Eubank did everything possible as did Calzaghe. In fact, I'd probably say Calzaghe was the most talented boxer of recent years. I appreciate your comments, but I don't think they hold much water.
Jones beat Laing twice to prove beyond doubt he was U.K's no 1 unlike Hatton who ducked Witter and Khan who is ducking Thaxton and Murray , fighters them days wouldn't say crap like "i'd beat him easy so why bother fighting him" Tyson once said fighters shouldn't say they wont fight other fighters , If you don't clear up your backyard first because your scared to fight how can you aspire to be great I CAN'T TAKE HATTON OR KHAN SERIOUS THEY DON'T HAVE THAT OLD SCHOOL WARRIORS SPIRIT
I take your point about Laing winning the fight by a mile, & being complacent, but Colin Jones did it to him again & in the 9th rd again, that is clumsy! Jones was Olympic rep, won Lonsdale belt outright, Commonwealth & European Belt, & had unluckly draw for World crown, hardly average!
colin jones tenia el problema que tambien tenia vito antuofermo o boom boom mancini, se cortaba muy rapido el rostro y esa era una desventaja en sus combates.
The fight with Kirkland Laing was stopped prematurely - which robbed us and the crowd of more excellent action. Colin Jones was a superb fighter, but to rate him above Ken Buchanan is just wrong.
Eddie Thomas was just "bigging up" his man at the time. Buchanan was far better all round fighter with better footwork and weight transference. Although Jones was a natural phenomenal puncher I always thought he was a comfort zone fighter and trainer.
i'm in a very bad place in my life at the moment , i have nothing to lose if you really want me to come to the gym give me the address and i'll be there anytime you want and i'm being serious , i'm not prepared to let anyone diss me verbally or physically without hurting them
I loved Honeyghan as a kid, growing up he was my favorite fighter, i remember him beating lloyd hibbert and then beating up sylvester mittee for the european crown, doin gene hatcher in about 40secs, what a great fighter he was, hard as nails but a bloody good boxer too, honeyghan was in a different class to jones. before nigel benn the ragamuffin man was easily the most exciting british fighter around
Kirkland Laing along with the Errol Christie were 2 of the most naturally talented boxers Britain has produced and a sad waste of talent. Having said that Colin Jones was a very good boxer himself, a lot of the time this was overlooked because he had murderous power in both hands.Watch how he destroyed Hans Henrik Palm
@copperpotbaby I've boxed since I was eight years old and was head coach at my dad's gym for three years so I think I know a bit at the very least. Take a look at all the other boxers that have graced these shores and re-think your comment. That is all....
Colin Jones was robbed with a draw against runner Milton. Curry was weight drained against Honeyghan, anyway Wales have the greatest ever British fighter Jimmy Wilde, "the ghost with a hammer in his hand" 7stone wet through with 99ko"s, voted 3rd hardest puncher of all time by Ring magazine!
Kirkland Laing was one of the worst I've seen in Boxing but I must admit he did beat Roberto Duran and had him confused but after that he went back to whatever that is he does..
you get the same stock answer, when you watch a Hagler video. Oh he"s the best, would Hopkins beat him etc. Carlos Monzon & Ray Robinson are also mentioned. But please, Stanley Ketchell, Sam Langford, Tiger Flowers & of course the man Harry Greb. ps I rate Hagler the best i"ve seen from my era, since i"m 37. But i look back through history. People forget or are unware that two of the great Brit fighters were Jews, Jackie Berg & probably a rival to Wilde"s claim as the best, Ted kid Lewis.
@GreatestHooligan if he fights in USA? he did fight in for world title in 1983 getting a draw, & losing rematch on split decison! hardly "get fuck in the ass" as you eloquently put it! This fight is from 1980, are you new to Boxing or something!
kirkland, a very stylish boxer, full great speed and incredible footwork, followed by an insane amount of power not just in his arms, but his legs also. kirkland laing is under-estimated and underated boxer.Obviously he is envy and compationate about boxing.
Thats why i don't come on internet or the street and call people idiots because one day you will have to prove it , i don't care if you think Hatton and Jones are the best britain have to offer i didn't ask for your opinion , YOU STARTED THIS . Do you even know who your calling an idiot ? i didnt diss Jones i stated he never won a world title which is true , PLEASE DO NOT CALL ME AN IDIOT AGAIN UNLESS YOU WANT TO TAKE IT FURTHER . its your move
what about making statements like "you described your disgusting bile really well" and "public domain" does that make me sound thick!? you must have pretty high standards! I used some bad language, i'm not overly sensitive to language like that, like some people are. I used that word because i wanted to make my anger and opposition to vile racism as clear as possible. you're obviously a very delicate flower so I will refrain from more such language but i apologise for nothing.
@simondgrass Gene Tunney the man who beat Jack Dempsey, said Wilde was the best boxer he ever saw! The Mighty Atom was voted best British fighter of 2oth century by Boxing news.
I don't box , but you've already gaveaway clues to where your gym is and i wont be bringing no boxing gloves , and i wont be using no Marquess of Queensbury rules . The mood i'm in right now i'd love a pussie to start something LIKE THE LOTTERY IT COULD BE YOU
Don Curry made tomatoe puree with Jones face , if Colin was as good as you guys are making out he would have won a world title , He couldn't beat Milton McCrory who Curry ko'ed in two rounds . Loyd Honeyghan got his chance took his chance BEAT THE FORMIDABLE UNBEATEN DON CURRY UNDISPUTED .Still you have the audacity to say Jones was better then Honeyghan , If Loyd Honeyghan was white and welsh you would have an annual holiday yearly celebrating him
Great underrated fighter Colin Jones, hard as nails.
Huge boxing fan. Never heard of Colin Jones until recently. Tough, solid, classy dude. A true gladiator.
I'm from the states I've been a huge UK boxing fan for about eight years due to the internet man I just fell in love with Colin Jones unreal
Colin Jones give him time then your gone. Proper fighter big power🤗
I am a female MMA fighter and my uncle was an amateur boxer he told me two british boxers who never won world titles but should have been world champions were colin jones and herol graham he idolised them both and now I follow them and watch their fights - they are both amazing
Your Uncle was an insightful man, they truly were tremendous boxers
Herol Graham was magic.
So true
Colin Jones was the best fighter you will ever see in the 2nd half of any fight.
I say the same best 2 boxers not yo win a world title
Every time I watched Colin Jones I never took my eyes off his right hand, waiting for that right hook. He was brilliant.
I could watch this fight all night long!
when it comes to boxing , and this is just an opinion , i think the bygone days were far better to watch , in every division, there just doesn't seem to be many fighters to make you sit up and take notice , as for Jones and Laing , both superb fighters , and anybody who fights even up to national level really deserves credit . i have been embroiled in arguments about this and that boxer , then just think wtf, if they are both British whoever wins even if not my choice , still deserves our backing ,if people don't want to , thats their choice and i accept that to .
True, and I love watching fights from the 70`s and 80`s.....and that is not nostalgia, THAT is
quality.
Thanks for putting this up. Remember it at the time. If Jones had been able to fight from the first bell he would have gone further.
This was also the year poor Johnny Owen succumbed. They breed them tough in Wales indeed! Halcyon days in boxing around this time.
one of my fav fighters Colin Jones ... I think here he was losing every round apart from the last .... Lang was quality too
Laing passed away in June. Nary made news within the boxing fraternity. Shameful. RIP Kirk
Jones sure had some power
Two proper Warriors both with great talent....... ;-)
Kirkland laing great talent people forget he beat Roberto Duran
You never knew what Kirklan Lang was going to turn up. So unpredictable but exciting nonetheless.
Gutted when Jones was stopped in his world title fight because the bridge of his nose split. He had so much left in him that night.
Don Curry was a great fighter though..
Thanks for this. I thought Colin had amazing power, determination, and a great chin. Very unlucky to have lost to McCrory (I thought he won at least the first fight and possibly the second) and only cuts ended his career. One of my all time favourites
The Late Great Jimmy Wilde....The Ghost with the Hammer in his Hands...
kirkland laing is one off my fav boxers and alot of pepole havnt heard of him, underated unquie style that no one could copy he was the gifted one
Great fight. Two real tough men
What great fighters they were, one puncher one boxer, punch against brain ,heart against chin, man against man in its most primal form, fucking hard stuff.
i lived in hackney where kirk lived,he now is an alcholic, drug ravaged man, when u ask him of duran fight and winning titles u might as well talk like a teletubbie.we used to see him train as a kid and such a lovely warm man,its a sad shame.

Colin knocked him out like a recruit doing milling on a para p company course, relentless!
For a small country,Wales have produced some great boxers.
Superb Jones. But so was Laing. Great times.
Such a great fight. It's so like life, all that fancy showing off, appearing to be battered by Laing, but Jones just bided his time and just "dropped him" right at the end of the fight! Fair play Col, one of the greatest.
why hasn't anyone posted Kirkland Laing fights????????????
HE'S AWSOME !
Both very gifted fighters , and like Eubanks and benn , hearns and Leonard ,etc.. They were lucky to have been around in the same era.they defined each other as fighter ,gifted in each owns way ,no losers here.
I was there for both Jones fights and ended up in his dressing room straight after the fight
Lovely bloke with a scaffold pole of a right hand and a sledgammer left hook. Da Iawn cont
What a fight !! I remember watching this back in 1980 . Colin Jones was the man who beat the man , ( with respect to Kirkland Laing ) .
Commentator: "It's almost Mohammed Ali exhibition stuff" Two seconds later, the 'Mohammed Ali' fake got smashed - and in the return, he was dumb enough to allow himself to be stopped again in the same ninth round lol
Stopped to early,,But KL Was his own worse enemy,,What he could of achieved with disapline we,ll never know,,two great boxers anyway and a great bout ,,
Well said mate
Kirkland Laing could have been one of the greats, so gifted, but wasted his talent.
As good as jones was ,his manager Eddie Thomas is waaaaayy wrong saying jones was better than the brilliant ken buchanan. Trust me he wasnt
Jones was very very tough, took some good shots!

I saw Laing vs George Collins in Reading.
Laing was a cracking fighter.
kirk passed away yesterday 9/6/21🙏🏻
@@stephenm6100 very sad to hear that.
Know he had his demons and is hopefully now at peace.
Sad news.
Why the hell did they stop it?
The ref looked in his eyes and saw they were glazed. Laing didn't complain too much. Gave him a re-match and the same happened again!
Actually the last I heard of him was Steve Bunce doing a a spot on him a couple of years ago when he was said to be homeless and alcoholic and having suffered some kind of fall or something-a real shame as he was truly 'the gifted one'-til he met Jones that is...
Jones is Welsh and not English.
Fight starts at 5:00
Yes, Wales certainly has had the greatest British boxer, the incredible Jimmy Wilde. And others among the very best of British- Calzaghe, Freddie Welsh, Jim Driscoll, Howard Winstone... Jones the punch
Yep,Tony is certainly a gifted young man as well as being a nice lad-as is his Dad Terry-also a Brookside boy as I suspect you are Regreggy me old mate!

jimmy wilde is the best from britian! 99kos at only 7st, voted 3rd hardest puncher of all time by ring magazine!
Very unlucky never to be world champion in two classic battles with Milton McCrory .Fearless fighter !
Kirkland lang was a great fighter but Colin Jones was hard as nails with dynamite in his hands.
colin jones tenia el problema que tambien tenia vito antuofermo o boom boom mancini, se cortaba muy rapido el rostro y esa era una desventaja en sus combates.
If I remember correctly Buchanan and Eddie Thomas had fell out a little bit , this could explain his opinion somewhat
Colin Jones hard as hell
i'm in a very bad place in my life at the moment , i have nothing to lose if you really want me to come to the gym give me the address and i'll be there anytime you want and i'm being serious , i'm not prepared to let anyone diss me verbally or physically without hurting them

Yeah and Honeyghan destroyed Curry-but Jones would have beaten Lloyd...
@simondgrass Gene Tunney the man who beat Jack Dempsey, said Wilde was the best boxer he ever saw! The Mighty Atom was voted best British fighter of 2oth century by Boxing news.
And the greatest flyweight EVER by the ring magazine
cool name a date and time when we can meet up and i'll give you the address
both decent fighters but neither were a match for Lloyd Honeyman IMHO..back then he was too good for either
Both far better. Laing was a superbly skillful boxer and Jones a superb puncher with a great chin.
Jones would batter honeyghan
why bring race into any sport.. kirk was class but just got caught like bomber graham lewis morrison etc... colin was class..
WOW
styles make fights (innit?!)

Thought he should of fought mcrory over here but went back to usa for money cost him
