  • Embracing God’s Grand Narrative
    HERE'S HOW:
Today, let's challenge ourselves to remember this truth and act upon it. Ask others about their stories. Be genuinely curious about their lives, their dreams, their struggles. Not only will this enrich your own story, but it will also reflect God's love for each individual. So, as we go about our day, let's strive to listen more than we speak, to learn from others, and to treat every person we encounter with the understanding that their story is just as important as ours. By doing this, we're not only honoring God's creation, but we're also contributing to the grand narrative that He's writing across all our lives.

Everyone has a story… Six months before he was assassinated, Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke to a group of students at Barrett Junior High School in Philadelphia about their dreams for the future. He talked about how we're all called by God, whatever work we're doing, whether it looks big or not. He said, "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.'"…

As I’ve worked my faith out more the last 2 years, this is an amazing perspective on the trauma and hurts of our parents and how that influenced my upbringing. Kinda circles back to forgiveness and grace. I stumbled on John’s podcasts right at the beginning of his journey and am never disappointed……

"We just assume (others) are just characters in my story." This has deeply convicted me. That's so true in these challenging times - the day can so easily become 'all about me'. Thanks for this story today. (In fact it echoes my own grandfather's story and the toboos about mentioning him when we were children.)

good morning ☀️ Lol, YAS! spot on -my strength is “talking story”, I am blessed with strangers wanting to share their story with me. My daughters joke about it all the time…“mom, how do you know them? why are they sharing with you their Hawaiian Poke (salted raw tuna mixed in hawaiian sea salt, seaweed, onions,a local dish) while we stand in the cashier line!?!” 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t know why, I just said “hi, looks like you are going to eat well!”

Interesting… thank you. The concept of the Russian “matryoshka dolls” or what in America we call the nesting dolls” is interesting. Thinking about generational trauma and how my great-great-grandfather's scars became my scars. This thought can continue in the strips and crucifixion of our heavenly father and how we have become healed over the generations is another interesting thought that can be said cancels ❌ out generational trauma. More to think about while working on my dissertation on the past pains of the Native American people. Thanks for your story about your family's past. This assists in the power of story in each of our lives.

I know you enjoyed David Brooks’ book, “How to know a Person.” He talks a lot about asking questions. And being genuinely interested in people’s stories. And making eye contact! I do find a select few who will gladly tell their stories and never ask you about yours. I’m rarely in a situation where I’m interviewing folks so I want to share some of myself with this “new friend.” Some just don’t know how to have a conversation. Some, perhaps, are self-centered.

  • @kenwiens2127

Aaah…the eye contact. When I’m afraid of a person looking through the windows of my eyes and seeing what’s inside I avert my gaze; but to my amazement, when I redirect my focus off of myself and onto the other person I have no trouble making eye contact 😂!

My first thought at the beginning, before you told the story of your grandfather, was: Every time I attend a funeral and here the deceased’s story, I always think “I wish I had known that part before they died”. So yes, it is important to tell each other our stories.

This was very powerful-going to listen now a third time. I'm in the process of writing my memoir - been doing at it for a long time now. The things we don't know about those before us, and the things we do that have profoundly affected us - so much we can hold with God. So much in this conversation today that I want to be with God around - just wanted to say thanks.

I am reading a couple of chapters of Job for my daily devotions and will finish up Wednesday. Oops... I didn't recognize Satan's story as part of Job. I'm going to reread those early chapters before I finish. I use the ABC technique suggested by John... a lot. A chance meeting at a coffee shop can lead to a rewarding exchange of stories. I find it's easy to get people to talk about what they do... jobs or hobbies... and things they have done... you just have to be curious.

I am developing a relationship with our Cleaner. She comes because my husband has dementia and I am his carer . yesterday. She was rushing out very distressed after a phone call that her son had had a fall at school and cut himself. I asked her to pause at the door as I felt the Holy Spirit prompted me to pray for her And she was able to take a deep breath of God Shalom before she rushed off. I asked her to send me a text later and she was grateful for our prayers and relieved that he just needed to be glued back together. Everybody has a story and everybody’s story matters
