      I can relate. A few years ago my best friend, not knowing what to get my husband, bought him a Star Wars-themed journal with a picture from The Phantom Menace on the cover. She not only picked an item he'll never use, she also unknowingly chose the worst movie in the franchise.

      When I met my late husband he had a lot of Wonder Woman stuff at his place. I was like, “cool, you like Wonder Woman.” Nope! Someone gave him a WW present once, he was polite about it, and everyone else just assumed he liked her and the rest was history. For years his friends and family would gift us WW stuff and/or alcohol, and we hardly drink. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    1:54 One time, back in 2003 or so, my father gave me a $20 gift card to Starbucks. At the time, it wasn’t accepted everywhere, and there was a sticker on it even stating that, so I never used it after a Starbucks employee at Target told me they couldn’t use it. This was also during the age where they would charge a fee after a certain time limit if you did not use it, which was also mentioned on the card. I kept it anyway.
    A year or two later, my father passed away, and they outlawed and reversed the fees. Many people would have thrown out their cards, but I kept mine. About two years ago, I rediscovered it in a drawer, and checked the balance, and sure enough, it still had $20. One day this year, we were at Disneyland, and my 9yo daughter wanted Starbucks. I dug out that card, and paid with it. I then told her how special that latte was, because her grandfather, who passed away 7 years before she was born, bought her that. The magic of gift cards.

    Red envelopes with cash that people give away during Chinese New Year might be something to think about in Christmas. The downside with red envelopes is that people start to compare the amount of cash given by different people. There probably won't be any perfect solution when it comes to gifts.

    • @BioYuGi
      @BioYuGi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And when you get down to it, if everyone is just giving everyone money, then what's really being done? I know that a group of five people aren't all going to give each other the same amounts of money, causing everyone to end up with the same amount of money they started with (Except perhaps the cost of the envelopes to begin with). But an *attempt* at thoughtfulness might be nice.

      Which is why for the Chinese envelopes, it is considered incredibly rude to open the envelopes in front of everyone. You accept them (with both hands) and thank them profusely, put them all in your pocket, purse whatever, and open them when you get home (or in the privacy of your own room). By then, unless they sign the envelope, you don't know which you got from whom.
      Also, for the envelopes, these are only given from married adults to the unmarried younger generation. No one gifts "up". So no one would ever be "exchanging" cash.

    • @MagnoliaBelle369
      @MagnoliaBelle369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And a direct juxtaposition of that rule is whatever you buy yourself from Halloween on will be wrapped and used as your gifts - just to have presents under the tree.
      I haven't received a birthday or Christmas present since I was 15, but for years when my family had money to buy presents and randomly shop, whatever I bought myself I would hold back and then wrap and put under the tree; to make it look like I had presents.
      It's just myself, my father and our pets; so any presents or food always fell to my responsibility. After 20 years of not getting a single present, I just gave up.
      Now we don't celebrate anything, but our pets birthdays.

    I personally love buying gifts for people I know. The fun of it is digging down deep and finding something that someone wouldn't buy for themselves, but something they will genuinely enjoy and have use for. Another good gift idea for grandparents is to have family photos updated in their home. Have some nice pictures taken of their kids and grandkids and then have them printed and framed in a frame that will match the decor in their house. People (me included) rarely get around to updating family photos.
    Also a heartfelt card or note that tells someone what you love about them can never go wrong either. Food gifts (if you know what food that person likes) are usually well received. I like getting gifts, but I get more excited at seeing someone open a gift I got them and knowing they really like it. I try not buy useless or tacky things.
    Paying for experiences such as museum memberships, a painting/pottery class, tickets to a play/movie, sports event, concert, etc are also great ideas if you know the person well enough

    Don’t forget the person that just loves anything you buy. My siblings tell me that’s their problem for me. I just love anything they buy. I genuinely do. Pretty much the only time only time I might be less than happy is is someone buys me clothes. And it isn’t because someone bought me clothes I hate that I dislike getting clothes. No it’s because my size is so weird that it’s totally likely that none of it will fit. It’s better for me to just try something on so I’m sure it fits. So yeah, that’s about it. It’s more a practical thing. Will I appreciate the thought? Probably. I may even like the item picked out, but I’ll be upset, and so will the gift giver, if it doesn’t fit and that makes me feel bad. So yeah. Maybe cash is sometimes a good gift. My grandma certainly sends us that, but I’m not big on it. What I like about gifts is that, for at least the length of time it took someone to pick it out, someone I cared about took time to think about what I like. Maybe they get it wrong but that’s the part I genuinely like. And if they get it right it makes me happier because it also means they listen to me and pay attention to me and remember that later. That’s the part I like about gifts and picking them out. Yeah it can be hard to pick out gifts myself because of this, especially for newer people in my life or ones I haven’t seen in a long while, but…well then I have the advantage of being an artist. I can actually make some very nice paintings and other art projects that people treasure. I try not to do this one too often however as it can get old and sometimes space is an issue for the receiver. So I try to use this only when it’s the most meaningful (pet passed away, etc) or if I have few choices that I like for other gifts. I also have to have time to put it together as I have a certain level of quality I expect of myself. That’s actually a big reason why I’m doing something like a painting for my brother. He actually loved a painting I sold this year. I would have reserved it for him but….between the fact that the person who bought it was my sister who got it for our nephew, and between the fact that I did need the cash, I couldn’t hold it. My nephew really loved it though. So yeah. This year my brother gets a painting. My brother also hates too much clutter so a painting is best. He likes those and he always feels less cluttered about things he can actually hang up on a wall. He’s still in a life stage of moving around fairly often so it’s probably for the best. As for the rest of my family. I’ve got them set. My sister is getting something from her long time favorite show. Mom is getting something sentimental (ongoing competition with my siblings to make mom cry over a gift due to sentimentality and I usually win). Dad is getting a cook book he really wanted. Or failing that, a display for his DC figures. My other sister had a childhood lamb toy she used to carry around everywhere. I found it recently so she is getting that. My brother I mentioned. As for my uncle and his girlfriend who are currently staying with us until their new apartment is available (they finally got one, yay!) they are getting a painting of their puppy (might as well paint their new addition while he is still a puppy). Yes I’m painting it. So I guess that’s another painting. The rest…well my girlfriend I sent her gift since it was time sensitive to buy and our anniversary is the day before Christmas Eve. I got her a Ghibli music box. It’s that cat one. She already owns the girl one so this was meaningful for those who understand the reference. I tried looking for a manga book secondhand that she has been searching for but even I can’t find it at a reasonable price. I sometimes, if short on cash, I’ll back bags of peoples’ favorite cookies or other treats. I’m a a good baker but it can sometimes be stressful since I mostly used it as a coping mechanism when really upset. Oh well. This is long enough. Thanks for reading!

    My idea for gift giving is to write notes on my phone if I remember. The more you talk to someone the more you'll know about their interests. Since I rarely see my one sister I have no idea what to get her. Other ideas that help with gift giving is to give them something I think that might be handy for them or look up those gift buying guides online and sometimes they have some neat ideas. If you are really unsure if they'll like something give them the receipt so they can always take it back and get something else they'll want more. I think gift cards are great, as long as it is for a store they actually like. Cash is always good as well. Also give someone a cheaper gift and then a gift card or cash with it can make it more thoughtful, I feel.

Our parents are older so buying them gifts is so easy. I get both of my parents hearing aid batteries. They prefer Costco brand and it is difficult for them to get to Costco. I also like to get postage stamps because they don’t use computers and still mail everything. I knitted my Dad an Afghan this year to go with the lift chair we bought him this summer. I always make my brother his favorite pecan tarts for Christmas. Mother in law needs stamps too. But I don’t do gifts with friends, cousins, etc.

Especially if the bag is a Christmas one.

      Great idea, if you know what the person will like and eat. In our family, we usually exchange lists of desired items, and I often put something like this on the list, varying depending on what I have been eating a lot of lately, but fancier versions. So one year, I might ask for flavoured oils and vinegars, another year for dried fruit and nuts like cashews, pistachios, etc. There's almost always some amount of candy and baked goods gifted, so this is partly an attempt to steer people away from some of that.
