I often wonder what would people like Melina have to say about the situation that Greece has suffered and endured during the last few years of the economic crisis. She would have used her outspoken personality to blame the culprits, I'm sure.
GrecoCalabrese Perhaps in our days most Greek and other nations'politicians are easily corrupted. We have to elect people more like "Dikaios Aristides" than we may have better governments worldwide.
She might have been an ok cultural minister, but the PASOK socialist government she was part of in the 80's, was one of the main reasons Greece's economy was ruined. The national debt skyrocketed from that time on.
It's not a fair critique. When PASOK came to office, Greeks whose background was leftist were blacklisted from any government job. For decades leftist Greeks were prevented from employment by the state and left to fend for themselves. When PASOK came to office they promised to fix that injustice. But what to do? In 1981 Greece had around 400.000 civil servants; do you fire half and award their jobs to the previously disadvantaged? It would have created a sizable bloc of seething, angry and bitter foes. The new government solved its dilemma by simply hiring another 400.000 leftists to create parity. Greece's rising debt levels were manageable while Greece was in control of its monetary policy, it was only when the Euro was introduced that the problems piled on without a national solution. Blame for the mess should be shared out among all to fed at the trough.
I was there in 1967 when the socialists took over the government of Greece! It was horrible for Greece! No more Bazouki music, curfew was at 6 pm or you got shot! No questions asked. The streets were filled with tanks and soldiers with weapons! Bombs were set off! I came so close to getting blown up when I went to mail postcards to my grandparents! Just before I turned the corner, it went off from the mail slot! I was 14! So awful
It was not the socialists. It was far-right. Military Junta, Coup d'état. And lasted for 7 years and ended to the Cypriot invasion. It seems you weren't there.
She did not do this for fame or recognition, she did it to help her land and her people and contribute to her country, I admire you Melina💗💌
Powerful words spoken with such honesty and passion.. I wish more politicians and people, in general, were like her.
