Do the New York Mets Need to Change Their Lineup Again?

  • The New York Mets offense struggled on Tuesday night, as Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo went a combined 0-for-12. Do the Mets need to consider switching up their lineup again?
Host Ryan Finkelstein talks about Brandon Nimmo's struggles in the three-hole and what the Mets should do to try to jump-start him to hit better.
Would it make sense to return Nimmo to his leadoff spot, despite how well Lindor is playing atop the lineup? Or should they drop him down in the lineup instead?

Christian Scott and Jose Butto both should be in the five man rotation this very moment and i have no idea.....other than to identify with how much they're paying some of these guys starting ahead of them.....why Scott and Butto innings are being wasted in Syracuse. Additionally....fans would appreciate seeing them battle a whole lot more than veterans that continue to struggle.... obviously several of them fit that description.

Really starting to wonder if the Mets would make Nimmo available. They’ve moved him out of his position and then out of the 1 hole. If the Mets don’t value him like they used to I’m certain that other teams still do. If there was ever a player who would benefit from a change in scenery…

    • @LockedOnMets

Considering his long-term deal, I don’t think Nimmo’s going anywhere. The team still values his productivity and leadership, even if he hasn’t been as good on the field this year as in recent years.

Nimmo is a corner outfielder that his best year he hit 24 home runs, 68 runs batted, doesn't steal bases; with 6 years of 20 million a season left not a lot of time would be interested. Of all positions in baseball corner outfielders are the easiest to find, not a value. This contract is going be upside down very soon with age, etc. so it is pretty much unmovable for anything of value.

Nimmo has proved he's not the same lead off hitter he once was and now he is batting in the 3rd spot which is supposed to be where your BEST hitter is positioned. He has the highest amount of strike outs on this team along with a terrible average. Now the Mets are playing the the last place Marlins and have dropped the first game. I believe that this series will determine if there is going to be a fire sale so we can save the 2025 season.

This game is the perfect example of why Mets fans simply can't stomach this team. Coming off a sweep at Washington and a split in London with Philly this fanbase finally had something to look forward to......a homestand and a very poor Marlin's team coming into NYC. What happens?? The Mets go 0-14 from slots 1-4 in the lineup. That's disgusting and it defines the current roster. This team lacks heart. They can argue that but their play on the field reflects my sentiments. They make it a habit to let down their fans every time they give them a bit of hope.

I value Nimmo’s OBP more than his average. He has shown that he can work that count and can work out a bunch of walks at leadoff. I don’t think teams are that worried about old ass JD hitting after him so that might be why he is seeing different pitches at the 3 spot. Nimmo has to be leadoff again but like you mentioned, Lindor’s is having his best stretch leading off.
Hopefully they make the move to put Nimmo back to leading off and Lindor has to be one to adjust hitting 2 or 3 now. Or maybe some other moves are made at the deadline who knows.
JD has to be moved down to 5 after Pete hitting clean up. Vientos has been solid but I’m not entirely sold if they threw him at 2 or 3. Marte adds another 10 years the more you move him up. If only Jeff can stop golfing balls into the center fielder’s glove.

I would argue that this team is closer to the Nationals and the Marlins than they are to the Phillies and Braves. 77 and 85 Fink. That's reality. Beyond that explain the theory of the Mets batting order. In what world is Pete Alonso a number two hitter. Even if he gets on base you're going to need atleast two hits to get him around. Lindor belongs in the three spot. Put your contact hitters and base stealers at the top of the lineup. Let them get on base so that when Francisco or Pete gets a hold of one, it's not just a leadoff solo homerun. I know what the models say. Guys at the top of the lineup get more at bats so put your best hitters at the top but frankly I've never been a fan of analytics. These computer driven lineups just don't make sense. Somewhere Whitey Herzog is spinning in his grave.

Trade Alonso and get something for him. You might still be able to get 2 solid relievers for him. Wait for free agency and bid for Alonso then. In the meantime change the lineup. Lindor, Vientos,JD, Alonso, Nimmo,Marte Alvarez, Iglesias, Bader. If Alonso trade goes thru put Vientos on 1st base. Baty on 3rd... Then it would be Lindor,Vientos,Marte,JD, Nimmo,Alvarez, Baty,Iglesias,Bader. This year doesn't look promising set yourself up with some relievers and let the baby Mets play. McNeil you are 2 beeps from flat lining. How you get rid of him is difficult with his huge contract. I'm not sure what team can use him at this point.

I think it's time to move Nimmo....I like Lindor, Marte, JD Martinez, Alonso , in that order. Even with all the heartbreaking losses I've seen this group endure the last 4 years, I've also seen some amazing, emotional comeback victories, and what I can't wrap my head around is why they almost always look flat, and lose games right after they win close exciting ones. Megill is solid?!?! Megill is a LONG RELIEVER/swing man. The Mets get 5 innings on average from their SP. Yes. They didn’t hit yesterday, but they are INCONSISTENT EVERYWHERE! Move Nimmo to the nine hole.Does it matter? The Mets score 8 runs & still find ways to lose! The National League is atrocious & why there’s any discussion of the Mets doing anything to get back in this. Only FIVE TEAMS in the LEAGE are above 500. Eventually that corrects itself. It’s why I kept saying they are more than 1 player away because they aren’t a good team!!!

To: benjamin watler 1848: I never liked people who lied to the fanbase saying that the team would be competitive. That puts high expectations on the fanbase, besides, an owner who can spend high millions on a REMBRANDT cannot let STEARNS implement a MINI MARKET/ MONEY BALL PHILOSOPHY in N.Y., the SPORTS CAPITAL OF THE U.S.

0-fer Mets is the theme of 2024. They are simply a bad team.

It was the most stupid move made by the analytics dept. thru this manager. NIMMO has to be dropped to the 7th or 8th slot in the lineup. AND PLEASE FORGET ABOUT THIS TEAM GETTING A WILD CARD SPOT. THEY WERE INTENTIONALLY STRUCTURED BY MINI MARKET STEARNS TO FAIL BY SIGNING A WHOLE BUNCH OF VERY CHEAP LOW TIER FREE AGENTS. THIS WAS DONE ON PURPOSE IN ORDER TO EASILY DISMANTLE THR TEAM.

You realize that the Mets have the second highest payroll this year in the history of baseball? They had to clear the best major spending to move forward. It's not fair for Stearns to take the blame; as all off season he heard from the players, the media, the fans that this was a playoff team. The Mets spent so much money that if Alonso is kept all year and walks that the Mets will only get a 4th round draft pick at best. You can't expect Stearns to turn it around in one off season. Big money spending is not the key to long term success
