Test drove this beauty again today just to confirm if that “lull” and lag really exist and I have to say, it’s very minimal to the point that you no longer notice it. It just takes a little getting used to and it runs just like every normal automatics out there. Tried to stop twice in an incline as well and I really didn’t have any problems - not with the way it accelerated from a stand still and the Hill hold control works perfectly. I even went around the route for the test drive twice and had to go through some stop and go traffic, still I didn’t notice the “lull” or jerkiness. Take note that I was driving a unit that only has 300km in it, so the ride should get smoother after the 1st to 2nd pms. Tried to accelerate as well from 40 kph - gas pedal all the way down. There is a bit of hesitation but it does pull immediately, it’s not a delay that you’ll complain about. No, it is far from that! I’d say it’s just a hiccup. And if you do get the GE variant, that slight hesitation can be negated by the paddle shifters. Lastly, I want to point out the written review of this car on Autodeal’s portal. Nothing but praises from their writer Earl. At the end of the day, it is always best to test drive the car so you can experience it yourself.
The name of the car in Chinese is "影豹" which means "shadow panther". The name when spoken out is pronounced as "ying bao", which is how the English name "Empow" came around. So it's literally just about the pronunciation of its Chinese name, but we could say though it's also connected with the term "empower" which means "to give power" that of which stands for its position as a sports sedan. Thank you :)
@@inzane456 Because it still needs to pronounce as similar as possible to the Chinese name; naming it Empow is better as it does pronounce closer to the Chinese plus it's also a more subtle way of naming it. Don't you think naming it Empower is a bit too straightforward? HAHAHAHA
@@almotor Yeah, I like Shadow Leopard too, but true, it's too long, I fail to recall if there have been any car names that are two words. I guess Empow is a better name after all.
@@WEI-dv2bi I mean.... I'm certainly glad that Geely has a better head on their shoulders in marketing their vehicles overseas. They aren't forcing the Chinese market names to sound English, and look how well those nameplates are being accepted locally. This car will be an example of a good value car avoided by many potential buyers due to the name.
That delay on full stop is the dual clutch transmission, since they are disengaged once you fully step on the brakes. It gets sometime to be used to it.
All the ones you’re looking for like the wireless charging and paddle shifters are in the top of the line GE variant. Nonetheless, another great review! 👍🏻
This Empow could be to sport sedans what the Coolray is to crossover SUVs, a game changer. It looks great inside and out with best in class performance to boot.
I hope in your next episodes, you'll include night-time driving so you can also give impressions on how it looks outside and inside (cockpit at night) :)
Great review as usual! Only got to drive this around a parking lot lol (forgive me that was 1st review) but seeing on the road from another car, i think it looks great. Weirdly it didn't have the red interior. Get this on highest variant and Its definitely something to be worth seriously considering
I'm desperately hoping you'd review the GE variant as well. Because most of the shortcomings you're talking about is in that variant, want to know your thoughts about it.
I suggest that when you demo the cargo space capacity of the cars or crossovers you feature, use a Large, Medium and Small luggage samples as items to store at the boot. Instead of using just balikbayan boxes. Since most of the time, people who travel or pick-up their guests from the airport would really benefit from this kind of cargo capacity analogy, rather than just balikbayan boxes. Love your car reviews all the time Caco... please show us how many Large size luggage can fit in the boot (ex. 2 large + 1 small cabin luggage; or 2 medium + 1 small; 1 L + 2 medium)
Got to test drive the empow earlier. It’s really an amazing all-rounder for me and the acceleration is really amazing. Also, my agent told me that the Emkoo and the GS3 should come this year and may debut in the 2023 MIAS.
Cacs, can we go back to specifying horsepower as either BHP or PS? Or is there only one standard nowadays? Did the world finally drop BHP and adopt PS across the board?
Wheel spin could be because of average tires. It could also be the high torque/lower horses ratio. I'd still get a city or vios though unless the bumper to bumper is 10 years
The Geely Coolray has continental UltraContact uc6's tyres as standard and still spins the wheels from standstill, this has similar power, lighter, and is also front wheel drive (which is more prone to wheelspin)and maybe the turbo kicking in at lower rpm's help contribute to the wheelspin
Yo Caco, wdym the third brake light in "most" sedans are up top? i don't think that's the case man. Unless you mean SUV's or Crossovers? or anything other than a sedan.
Emgrand is a subcompat (much less power and acceleration), it also has acceleration delay and underwhelming power (compared to mg5 and city) but has better looks overall.
Just test drove the Empow today. You just need to get used to the DCT. It’s not really a deal breaker. Also, if you get the top of the line GE variant, it will have paddle shifters which can help negate the delay in the transmission. Overall, the car is an amazing package. It looks a lot more stunning in person inside and out. Lastly, for the money you’re paying, you’re getting a hell lot of car.
@@ninjaaabunnny i’ve only had several laps around filinvest in Alabang. Got to try out stop and go at the traffic lights. I barely even felt the “jerking” these reviewers are talking about. I actually fell in love with this car and I’m planning to get one before the year ends.
@@nielsalute9069 yea it gets sometime to get used to, but since empow got the better DCT which is the wet one you really won't feel that much jerking compared to the dry one. Why it always seems DCT's has some drawbacks compared to traditional AT's? I just noticed this consistently on Chinese Brands and as Caco reviews them here.
Because DCTs are basically manual with automated gearshift. Dct stands for dual clutch. It's always delayed from standstill as it's not yet engaged. But once it clicks it accelerates way better than any transmission.
I'd go for the Empow. I've seen so many complains about MG in several groups. Try watching fun facts about GAC here in YT, you will be glad after learning the brand.
Empow in easy translation for Chinese who aren’t that good with English. It stands for “ Empowered”. They named it the same way the Japanese executives named the “Walkman” for the portable music disk players back then. Some aren’t that good with English so they want to use an English word that’s easy for non English customers .
hahaha. I like the... gu gu ga ga... on the start. I reckon they name it Empow so that the way it being said, it's like, it packs a up a punch at end. Like: "em-POW" "em-POW" "em-POW". Something like that.
The name "Empow" is a combination of the words "empower" and "power", and is intended to convey a sense of strength and capability. The name is likely chosen to reflect the car's features and characteristics that are designed to provide a comfortable and spacious interior, advanced safety features, and a range of modern technologies to enhance the driving experience. The name is also intended to evoke a sense of confidence and empowerment for the driver and passengers. Overall, the name "Empow" suggests a vehicle that is powerful, versatile, and reliable, and that can help its occupants achieve their goals with confidence and ease. Funny enough there is also a Chinese company called MPOW that sells headphones and such which are cheap yet the sound quality is quite good. Then again maybe they are trying to keep the chinese thing as consistent as possible as to relate it to the Red envelope you mentioned in the video.

The throttle lag is due to the throttle controller, turbo lag and dct lag.
