I have visited Emporia KS for the first time when I went to ESU for College in 2015. I thought Emporia was just a small town, but after being over there for a year, I loved it. The atmosphere is just so laidback and inviting all around. The people down there are friendly, the diverse bars and local restaurants are appetizing, and the activities are amazing. I am a KC native, and I am willing to go back and revisit Emporia someday of how peaceful it was being down there. It's crazy that I have not been down there for nearly a decade.
Thanks for watching. Emporia is really a great place to explore. Big enough with the University and businesses, but small enough to wander the downtown area and just a block or so away are some nice neighborhoods to explore.
Emporia was an American Graffiti type town growing up in the 60’s & 70’s. It was a town where everybody knew your name and watched over the kids. The businessmen and merchants were a delight to shop with and chances were you played with their kids and the men played golf while the women were involved in social clubs. The kids all played baseball during the summer and swam at the public pool on the South part of town, or the Country Club in the north. By junior high and high school, all the kids joined together as either Vikings or Spartans. High school activities were the place to be on Friday nights and on Saturday it was one of the two collage’s that provided sport entertainment. Everyone attended church on Sunday, making Emporia the ideal town to grow up in.
One thing you didn’t mention that the corner of US 50/6th ave and Commercial was filmed for the movie “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote as the killers headed for Western, Kansas. My favorite place is probably the WA White Auditorium which you walked by but didn’t mention. My graduation ceremony for BS in History was held there.
Thanks. I didn't know that about the movie. The White Auditorium is historic and I should have mentioned it. I've been inside it for a conference once and it is really well maintained.
Looks like a well kept town and very quaint. However, the downtown area doesn’t seem to have many retail stores or restaurants, just businesses. Doesn’t look like there is much to do there. Thanks for the video.
There are a few restaurants - and a bit of shopping. The main attraction downtown is the theatre and the many office and government buildings. Most of the restaraunts are just a bit closer to the University which is just about 1/2 mile from the downtown center. There is a cool museum that I hope to visit this Fall downtown as well.

Emporia Kansas was not named after emporia Virginia. Emporia ks is about 30 years older then emporia Virginia. Emporia was named after ancient Carthage
i rember old timers talking about americus being the county seat until a group from emporia decided they would steal all the couynty records in the middle of the night the leader of the group was hung but emporia became the county seat@@WanderingWalksofWonder
I live right by the William Allen White house and Emporia is nice but has a nasty side to it with an extremely large amount of tweakers and numerous potholes throughout the city. It also has alot of unexpected waterman breaks that appear out of nowhere. The people are either or but very judgemental. I do online sales on Marketplace and this is the only place I've experienced issues with no shows or people trying to bully me online and I do alot of sales in other cities like Lawrence, KC, Olathe, etc and never had one issue but here it's a different story. I also was almost attacked in broad daylight about a month back two blocks from the William Allen White House and almost robbed last summer a block from the police station in broad daylight by a tweaker. Downtown is beautiful but it's getting to be dangerous at certain times and there's alot of thefts here and recently now shootings. Stay safe and watch out for potholes cause I've never seem so many anywhere else besides Topeka. I'm a lifelong Emporian born and raised and I can honestly say I'm embarrassed and ashamed to call this place home because of the people in general, not all, but quite a few. Great video though and one thing I can say about Emporia it has alot of fun activities during the spring and summer like the National Disc Golf tournament, Downtown concerts, food Trucks, Unbound Gravel Riders that come from around the world and celebrations that you can bring the whole family to enjoy.
I'm disappointed...I'm a jones ..and if you researched better...Jones is everywhere. From the land esu is on, we built. all its funding, every school high school, Jr high, votech, every grade school, every clinic, hospital , park..we are vital. There's so many family's like Hopkins, Bowyer etc you focused on 2 family's. But we are the ones that sustain its legacy thru 80s, mfg booms, covid, and keeping Latino & Asian culture vital to emporias experience.
Thanks for letting me know the history more on Emporia. Over the past few years I've been getting to know more places in the Midwest a bit more and starting next year I want to delve more into specific history at some of the places I have visited. If you could send me some more detailed information on the Jones family and Emporia, I would love it. I wanted to return back to Emporia and do more specific historical type videos on specific people, families, and events in places. It sounds like the history of the Jones family would make for a perfect video! You can reach out to me at my email or send me information through this comments section. Thanks again for the info and another possible detailed video I could do in 2025.
Why are tourist going here? It’s the most boring town on earth. I hate living here. There is nothing fun here and the downtown may seem fun because of our shops but once you start living here, it gets boring in like a month.
I happened to live in Preston and Carrie Plumb' s home for 33 years. So it is my favorite building on the tour. Thanks for the tour of Emporia's best!
You're very welcome!

It is your last spot on I-35 before it becomes the Kansas Turnpike. Not too big. Not too small.
Seem like a nice town!
It really is!
Beautiful town I wish I had the money to move down there right now
It really is a great place to live in and explore.

You are absolutely correct - I did a bit more research and found that information out.
Where are all the people at
I typically do my videos on quiet Sunday mornings as it allows for better views of the historical buildings.
