I initially started watching this series because watching you paint is so therapeutic, but your step-by-step breakdowns and simple explanations have made me decide to give it a go as well. So thank you :)
IG-88 has always been one of my favorite designs from the Star Wars universe. Very well done painting to bring this evil menacing robot (droid) to life.
I'm halfway through painting my IG-88, using this guide. This is another lovely, easy-to-follow guide. I'd recommend these guides to anyone who's painting their Imperial Assault miniatures. It's actually not that difficult to get great results by following them, and they might well make you a better painter in the long-run. They certainly have done for me.
Thank you for your hard work and creating those magnificent tutorials! And seriously, I know this is about painting but your music is simply a work of a genius. Love that disturbing sounds in the background, also the feel and vibe is so starwars-y it's hard to imagine it hasn't been taken straight out of the movies.
Sorastro's Painting Holy crap! I didn't even notice that that your music is original. Basically supports what I just stated in a comment reply to Curtis Delaney above that you add all those details to your production (as well as to the painting) that come together as a whole to create a unique and extremely professional ambiance
totally awesome. I have never painted before, but once of your videos got me interested and I am now eagerly awaiting your next tutorial to continue painting the figures still left! :)
If you happen to be able to get your hands on some, Tamiya makes a very nice copper-ish paint that adds a fun detail to the wires running across Iggy's body
Watching you add the red glaze reminded me of some Star Wars lore: IG-88 liked to wear the blood of the humans he killed...:P Love the detail and quality of your videos! So talented. --Levi from Memphis, TN. USA.
So awesome and simple, I've just finished mine and really like the blue and red glaze, looks amazing! I've just bought the next expansion and minis so I can't wait to start on the next wave of minis. Thanks again for your amazing videos, I have enjoyed painting my miniatures so much more with your tutorials :)
Not sure if I'm going to apply the lighting effects, but I did use some Typhus Corrosion on some joints for extra grunge and he's turned out pretty nice. Once again thanks for another great guide.
Fantastic, thanks! I just painted the wookies, and although I didn't have the paints you suggested I managed to use the techniques to get fantastic results. They were also the most enjoyable to paint yet! Looking forward to, perhaps, Diala?
Thank you Matthew! I'm happy your wookies came out well :) I am actually half way through filming Diala; I'm away on a break atm but will be resuming work on her later this week :)
Another amazing video! While I don't play it paint figures for this game your techniques have helped me with my other projects. Which at the moment is Mice and Mystics.
I just got this one, it appears IG-88 was quite a dirty robot! lol I'll probably keep him more of a black tone. I used your awesome vids to start with my storm troopers, thanks!
Incredible painting! I`m watching all your videos and I´m using some of your tecniques with mi Zombicide miniatures and they look really good. Thanks and keep working because these videos are very useful.
Curtis Delaney I think that those shots are like some of the impressive paint detail work he does in that they are so subtle that most of us don't notice them directly, but that they add to some generic sensation of quality that we pick up in the ambient experience of viewing. Thanks for drawing my attention to it :)
Man, painting is expensive both in time and resources! It's proving to be a very fun hobby though, and I'm closely using your videos to guide me through my first set of miniatures (the base game + wave 1 packs). Thanks for all the time and effort you put into producing these! I second the comment that Citadel should sponsor you, I've spent a fair chunk of change on their products at your recommendation!
Thank you so much Matthew! I agree it's pricey to get into (like most hobbies I imagine), but once you've got a good range of paints in your collection you'll find yourself needing to spend less and less until eventually you're just replacing paints as they run out (and they do last a good long time). Glad to hear you're enjoying it :)
+Sorastro's Painting Most welcome! By the way, do you have a recommended order to paint the miniatures for a beginner? Is your video series in order of increasing complexity/difficulty?
Hi again! Yes, it's not a bad idea to work through the videos in order - at least for the first few - as I did deliberately pick an order that introduces different techniques gradually. I'm not saying the Storm Troopers are particularly easy however, but they will give you a good amount of practice with thinning and brush control that will set you on the path to painthood :)
+Sorastro's Painting Will you be moving onto Vallejo paints in the future? What with them being cheaper and better than gw stuff. Some of the gw colours are hard to find in Vallejo range.
Hi Rob - good question! I'm not sure everyone would agree about one paint range being "better" than another (I think general consensus is that they each have particular strengths, and for many people it comes down to a preference for either dropper bottles or pots). Exploring additional paint ranges (P3, Vallejo, etc.) however is something I'd like to do once I have more time to dedicate to the video work.
+Tim Emmerson Thanks Tim! I couldn't really afford it but am managing to pay it off with Patreon income. It is a lovely camera and I'm happy with it as an investment :)
Absolutely wonderful viewing for novice and experienced painters alike! I would like to see Dengar next please.. Also, is there another way to do stormtrooper armour? Painted many west end games models using a similar method to the one you have used here, but I found the black wash shade a little dark..detracting from the black details such as visors and body glove etc.. also a question about the ard coat..does it turn yellowish in hugh over time? You should definately be doing this for a living btw..many thanks!
+John Waterman Thank you John! Regarding the Storm Trooper armor you could just highlight up to as bright a " white" as you like, or even just apply the black wash selectively into the areas you want black and leave the rest a pure white. The 'ard coat doesn't turn yellow over time (or at least I haven't found that it does so yet!) Happy painting!
You videos are a true inspiration that made me come back to the paintinghobby. I used to play Warhammer 40K but GW destroyed it for me with the constant changing of rule so agian. Keep up the fantastic work you do!
First let me say that I'm so appreciative that you take the time to make these tutorial videos. I do have a question though. After using a dry brush on my IG-88 I noticed that the figure was leaning forward just a bit too far. Perhaps I brushed too strongly on its back. Would a blow dryer and some positioning work to fix this? Or would it damage any painting I've done so far?
hey, still love watching the series. as a total novice painter, these videos make the task of mini painting look very easy to follow...but the investment in paints and brushes is a little daunting. do you have any advice for a reasonably priced starter kit of paints that would have options (even if fewer color options than you use) to give these minis a go?
Thank you Sir! I'm afraid I don't know much about the current range of starter kits. I've always just bought whenever individual pots I need for the figure I'm painting (until Mrs Sorastro bought me the Ultimate Paint Set that is!). Also, it may well be worth looking into Vallejo paints as they're a fair bit cheaper than Citadel but still very good (many painters actually prefer them - often because of the dropper bottles they come in).
Finally buying up all the stuff to embark on this painting experiment and was wondering, what's the best sort of paint palette for this kind of work? Been googling but most seem to expect large portions of paint being mixed and I'd expect with this we'd want many very small areas to mix in.
meerkat007 Hey Meerkat007 i've recently made myself a wet palette. It keeps the paint wet over days or weeks and you can work with much less paint then using a normal palette to mix the paint. I bought myself a plastic box which can be closed. A breakfast box or something like that. Put some water soaked tissue in it and on top of that one layer of "baking paper" (hope you know what i mean). On that paper you mix the paint. Works very good and the paint is always thinned without any effort.
OJey Thanks for both responses. I've just done some googling on wet palettes and they do sound like a great idea. I shall look into trying that out. But first, must finish my order for the citadel paints. So many paints...
First, my family and I really enjoy and learn from these videos: thank you very much! Second, we only own the base set, so is it bad if this particular installment makes me want to buy IG-88, just so I can paint it?
Hey Sorastro, I finished my IG-88 yesterday and I'm quit happy with the result ... as always following your lead :) ... In the end i had some difficulty with brushing and wanted to ask you what exactly the differenc between a heavy or light dry brush is. Is it the amount of paint, the amount of brush pressure or simply how often to brush? Maybe you can tackle this in one of your future videos ?! thx a lot ... and I'm ready for Diala now ...
+OJey Hi OJey! By "light" dry brush, yes - I mean having less paint loaded on the brush, and less pressure - so perhaps using just the very ends of the brush do give a light dusting. I would still flick the brush back and forth quickly, but stop once you've applied enough :)
it has been awhile since i have seen one your videos. So glad i was able to see IG88. looks absolutely amazing. i would like to support your channel as well. please send me information as to how i can contribute.
Hi Jonathan! Thank you for the kind comment and offer of support. If you click on the Patreon link in the video description that will take you to the Patreon page where you can pledge support :)
I have enjoyed all your videos that I have seen and love your professional setup in general. But I would love to see you try some other techniques with pigments for example and airbrushing on larger models. I understand that the point of your setup is to introduce begginer painters as well as others to this range but I really want to see you go all out on a centerpiece model. Also I know that a lot of the painters will be more familiar with GW paints but I would love to hear your oppinion on Vallejo and P3 for example. I also apreciate your advice on cameras (just what I need for my recently started blog) although my requirements are not at that level yet, good light box with diffused light and a camera with manual white balance should be enough I think. I guess I should join your patreon and try to twist your arm :-P
Hi there! Thank you for the feedback and suggestions; I'm always keen to hear about what kind of content people would like to see on the channel. I'd be happy to explore more advanced techniques in some of my future videos, but would still aim to keep the majority of my output as beginner-friendly as possible. If I am ever able to raise enough funding through Patreon to make it my full-time occupation (and I'm past a quarter of the way there!) then the sky's the limit; I could produce a much wider range of content including "total beginner" episodes covering the basics of thinning etc all the way up to wet blending, pigments, air brushing etc. whilst also covering much broader range of miniatures :)
I wonder how you came to your oil looking wash. Do you have real "feeling" how color looks alike if you mixed them or do you just try out a lot of times? Keep rocking!
Hi JamesBond! Although I'd like to do the Dungeon Quest minis I already have too many games that I want to cover so probably won't be able to - sorry! :)
Another incredibly helpful and thorough guide! Thanks a million, Sorastro! I was curious to know if you'e planing on guiding us through Boba Fett in near future> He's a new expansion, true, but hey, he's Boba Fett.
+Michael R Hi Michael! I'm aiming to complete it over the weekend, so Patreon early access should be Sunday/Monday and general release one week later :)
Great video. Do you reduce the area you wash as you reduce the area you dry brush ? Also when you say repeat 3-4 times is that in addition to the two repetitions you have already done ?
Sorastro, i'm unclear why you did the step of washing and necron drybrushing 3 or 4 times as opposed to the normal way. Was this to make the recesses darker?
Yes Sir. It's primarily a way of boosting the contrast, but also by reducing the area of drybrush each time it should give a smoother gradation from the darkest to the brightest parts of the mini :)
At the end of the video there are five paints listed as optional (Hashut Copper, for example). However, I did not notice when these are used. Are these for the optional base only? Also, top notch video as always, Sorastro. Thank you for making these.
Hi DakotaDevil! Thanks a lot! Yep - those optional colours are for the scenic bases. I think the full recipe for them can be found here: th-cam.com/video/tECaEVk7qrE/w-d-xo.htmlm52s :)
Well there you go. You got me into painting miniatures. I'll send my divorce papers (which my wife surely will file) to you:P Jokes aside - this is a fantastic tutorial series, probably most beautufully done miniatures I've ever seen!
I initially started watching this series because watching you paint is so therapeutic, but your step-by-step breakdowns and simple explanations have made me decide to give it a go as well. So thank you :)
Thank you so much Matt! Therapeutic? I like it :)
IG-88 has always been one of my favorite designs from the Star Wars universe. Very well done painting to bring this evil menacing robot (droid) to life.
+John Evans Thanks a lot John! Glad you like it :)
I thought this would be boring because of the figure but wow, you killed it. and production quality is absolutely top notch.
Thank you so much Travis! I did try to spice the mini up a bit with the grunge and lighting :)
Besides the fact that these are such amazing guides, the music for each one is incredible. It makes for a really high-value production overall.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that :)
Just painted ig88 based on your tutorial and love it.
Oh great - thank you sir! I'm glad these old videos are still bringing some joy 😄
I'm halfway through painting my IG-88, using this guide. This is another lovely, easy-to-follow guide. I'd recommend these guides to anyone who's painting their Imperial Assault miniatures. Very nice painting, really like that reflection of red light on one side and blue on the other. Smart!
Thanks a lot Brandt! I’m glad you liked it :)

You're very welcome!
totally awesome. I have never painted before, but once of your videos got me interested and I am now eagerly awaiting your next tutorial to continue painting the figures still left! :)
+Niklas Nilsson Thanks Niklas! I'm working on Diala Passil at the moment :)
+Sorastro's Painting great! Looking forward to it. Thanks again.
I'm ready to give this figure a shot. Also, the music in this episode is my favorite so far!
+bobby stickel Thanks Bobby! I enjoyed getting a bit dirty with the music for this one and had a blast creating that rock riff in 7/4 time :)
If you happen to be able to get your hands on some, Tamiya makes a very nice copper-ish paint that adds a fun detail to the wires running across Iggy's body
Thanks for the suggestion Jim! I could probably get some; I do love the Tamiya Clear Red for blood :)
still watching your videos. keep up the good work Sorastro
Thanks a lot Skolasiński!
Watching you add the red glaze reminded me of some Star Wars lore: IG-88 liked to wear the blood of the humans he killed...:P Love the detail and quality of your videos! So talented.

Thanks Levi! What fascinating (and slightly gross) bit of lore :)

I hope you are excited for the new Return to Hoth expansion coming out soon. I am placing my pre-orders now.
+Jonathan Ball I sure am Jonathan!
I love what your doing here keep it going
Thank you Waylow!
cheers Sobrastro! your vids have inspired me! ive learned so much!
Thanks a lot Tim! One day the geek shall inherit the earth :)
incredible as always. video and painting

Incredible painting!

Thanks and keep working because these videos are very useful.
Thanks so much Ruben! I'm glad you're finding the videos useful; I'll keep 'em coming :)
Another Fantastic vid there Sorastro
Thanks Cas! Glad you like it :)
Love the effect of the blue gazing. I'm wondering how it would look on an AT-ST. Metallic-Grime-Blue.
Thanks Tom! Hmm good idea - worth a try I reckon :)
Cool, Sam Witwer's one of your supporters. He was Starkiller in the two Force Unleashed games, and is a guest in the Order 66 podcast.
I'm not sure it that's THE Sam Witwer... I'd be amazed and flattered if it is!
Sorastro's Painting He seems like a regular nerdy guy since he plays Star Wars rpgs etc. I wouldn't be amazed if it really is him.
+edheldude I saw Witwer on there. it would surprise me at all that he's following you Sorastro
Bravo! for the shot at 5:23. :)
Thanks mate! It's really nice to know shots like that don't go unnoticed :)
I've got a TV background myself, so I know shots like that aren't accidental.
Wanted to let ya know its worth the effort, at least for me. :)
Curtis Delaney I think that those shots are like some of the impressive paint detail work he does in that they are so subtle that most of us don't notice them directly, but that they add to some generic sensation of quality that we pick up in the ambient experience of viewing. +Antonio Pérez Thanks a lot Antonio! I appreciate the comment :)
210th like. OMG IG-88 is THEEE Best Assassin Droid In The Whole Of The Star Wars Trilogy!
:D
And another great video.
Thank you (again!) for your comments :)
Love this channel!!!!!
Thank you! :)
Fantastic, as always! :)
Thanks Aaron!
Great Works ! I can 't wait to paint this one :)
Thanks again Yannick!

Fantastic Ive been waitning for this one =D
Keep it up and Im looking forward to Boba Fett

Sorastro's Painting Patreon it is then.
Thank you so much Hands; that's another milestone smashed!
Love these videos!! Curious, is the music free to use Sorastro? I would love to use it for a project I'm working on..
Thanks Joe! I'm afraid not at the moment but I might make it available to use at some point in the future. Sorry!
Great work.
Are you excited for Return to Hoth yet?
You bet I am Petr! But there's plenty more to be excited about before that (Boba Fett anyone?) :)
I wonder how you came to your oil looking wash. Do you have real "feeling" how color looks alike if you mixed them or do you just try out a lot of times? Keep rocking!
Hi! I usually just have an idea, test it on a spare mini, and maybe play with the ratios a little to get the look I'm after :)
Thanks for this!
Any chance of painting FFG's Dungeon Quest mini's?
Hi JamesBond! Although I'd like to do the Dungeon Quest minis I already have too many games that I want to cover so probably won't be able to - sorry! :)
Sorastro's Painting thank you for the response. If you ever run out of figures to paint, keep it in your back pocket! ;)
Keep up the great work!
Another incredibly helpful and thorough guide! Thanks a million, Sorastro!
I was curious to know if you'e planing on guiding us through Boba Fett in near future> He's a new expansion, true, but hey, he's Boba Fett.
Thank you! I'm currently editing Episode 13, and will be painting Boba Fett next for Episode 14 (how could I not!?) :)
Sorastro's Painting I can't wait to begin!
+Sorastro's Painting Uuuuh any ETA on E13? I am staaaaaarving....
+Michael R Hi Michael! I'm aiming to complete it over the weekend, so Patreon early access should be Sunday/Monday and general release one week later :)
+Sorastro's Painting Ah well. Am a Patron now. Don't have a lot of cash on me but the info you give out here deserve support :-)
Great video. Do you reduce the area you wash as you reduce the area you dry brush ? Also when you say repeat 3-4 times is that in addition to the two repetitions you have already done ?
+Martin Smith Thanks Martin! Only really in the last wash or so did I reduce the wash area. Three to four repetitions in total should be fine :)
+Sorastro's Painting awesome - thank you !
+Martin Smith You're welcome :)
That red glaze was a little tough for me to see. Red/green color vision deficiency :/
where do you get your supplies
what do you use for your gloss varnish? p.s. love your videos.
Thank you Valente! I use Citadel's 'Ardcoat :)
thank you :)
I painted IG-88 months ago, kinda wish I would've waited now :/
Sorry Jonny! :)
Ah geez, I guess if I would have watched that part I would have known. I chose to keep the regular bases intact. Thank you for your quick response!
No problem :)
what primer did u use
Well there you go. You got me into painting miniatures. I'll send my divorce papers (which my wife surely will file) to you:P
Jokes aside - this is a fantastic tutorial series, probably most beautufully done miniatures I've ever seen!
+Mateusz Szmit Thank you so much (and sorry about the divorce ;) ) I'm not the most amazing painter but I do appreciate your compliment :)
Now IG-88's head is a French flag
The paint list should read "Steel Legion Drab" rather than "Steel Leion Drab"
..or perhaps even "Steel Legion Drab"? :)
time for me to slow down (edited/fixed). ;)
Ha ha :)
You do that a ugly miniature, in my opinion, become a nice mini.
Thank you Moisés! I agree with you.. and glad you like the final result :)
