- 🔴 EN The Siria Fortress, Arad is a monumental fortress, dating from the 15th century. XIII century, built on the Citadel Hill (496 m), from where it dominates the region around the town of Syria.
The role of the city was strategic, defense, and economic with 110 assigned villages. The architecture of the fortress has several parts: the central body is built on a rock of irregular ovoid shape with level differences. To the west, the wall is 24 m long, high, and with holes. To the north are seen the remains of a donjon (tower). It had rooms and in the basement, it communicated in the outer courtyard through a door that closed as needed.
The outer courtyard was 36-38 m in size with almost intact walls. The thickness of the wall is 130 cm, and 3.5 m high. To the north is an opening that was one of the gates of the fortress. There was a drawbridge over the ditch in front of the fortress. The tower and surrounding wall are the oldest parts of the fortress. The dungeon with the ruined peak is 109 m long and 18 m wide. In front of the central body is a protective wall at a distance of 2.5 m, enclosing a small courtyard of refuge. The surrounding wall is 28 m long, with an entrance only from the west. The ditch of the fortress located in front of the outer courtyard was in some parts 10 m deep and 14 m wide, but in some parts, it was less steep.

It is fascinating to see what is left of this fortress centuries after it was built. It is amazing how well some of the walls have remained standing after so long. I imagine it must have looked very impressive when it was in use. Thanks for giving us a tour of this fortress!
