We work a single dog to recover deer in the harshest of ground sometimes 24hours after a deer has been shot to assist in the recovery of a lost animal. Tracking is something that we master to a level that would astonish anyone in the IGP world, working dogs through blizzards, being out on the mountain for 3 days straight and also picking a wounded individual deer track and the dog being able to separate it from the rest of the herd. I highly suggest that anyone looking to reach a stage of tracking mastery get a read at "Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer" book by John Jeanneney. First we must understand what is the scent the dog is following based on time. up to 3 hours following the scent of an animal or person. after 3 hours the scent has gone and the dog is following the phenolic compounds in broken grass and foilage being broken down by micro-organisms. so after 3 hours the dog is much more liable to cross from one scent trail (>3hrs old) to another scent trail made by an animal/human ((>3hrs old) BUT ONLY IF THE ANIMAL OR HUMAN IS THE SAME WEIGHT. yes, the dog can figure out if an animal is lighter or heavier that the two old scent trails do not match. I have been tracking deer for over 30 years as a hunting guide using Bavarian Mountain Hounds.
There have been instances where ScH/IPO/IGP trials for tracking have been done in snow storms! IGP trainers are tough! I know someone who had certified Wilderness SAR/Cadaver certified/Water cadaver certified K9 Rottweilers (through a national K9 organization. She also has urban SAR K9’s. She is a master at teaching pretty much any breed to track pretty much anything!!
@@1packatak I believe you I know IGP girls and guys are training at all hours in all conditions. But when a deer is jumping 12 feet at a time, staggering, leaving a wound couch while crossing the paths of other deer this is when an experienced deer tracking dog begins to teach the handler. We never correct our dogs on a trail because if we do it in training we are liable to do it on the mountain. Trust the dog as the trail never goes where you expect in real world tracking.
@@OnyxIGPIII thermal drones won't pick up a frozen deer carcass 24hrs after being shot or in thick dense forest with an even thicker understory. Dogs beat drones hands down.
Im picking up a puppy next month with 2 parents who exhibit great potential. I've tried to get involved in this sport way back 10 years ago, but life happens. These videos are priceless for someone who is wanting to compete again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Not just what "truly dominant dog" is but dogs who who show dominant behaviour that may only be an 8 out of 10 on the dominant spectrum. I saw your video about handler aggression and you talked about redirection and social/dominant aggression. I really wish you could expand on the social aggressive/ dominant dog some more. To me dominance is on a spectrum of say 1 to 10 and 10 or 10+ being a truly dominant dog which we know is rare. I would like to hear more about these dogs that are on 7 to 9 scale of dominance and the type of behaviours you tend to see. Would really love to hear you ramble on about this subject in greater depth. Thanks for all the knowledge you share Haz and I wish you continued success.

Have you ever tried herding with your working line german shepherds? 🤪 I just wonder if they wouldn’t be too rough for sheep.
