I watched the first three episodes of this show, stopped, and finished the show almost four months later. The result was me forgetting Cam had existed until this video.
I feel like if they had cut Cam, they could have fleshed out Conrad and Jeremiah more, because by the end I didn’t feel emotion for either of them getting together with Belly. Maybe the writers will flesh their relationships out more in Season 2.

The narration is really a detriment to Belly’s character, and most teen show protagonists.
A very smart TH-camr once said that moral ambiguity is all about different perspectives. What was going on in Belly’s head? Was she jealous? Well-meaning? Oblivious? The problem with the narration is that it never gives room for speculation, or allows us to form our own bonds with Belly.

Anyways, great video! Sorry for the essays, I’ve been thinking about this show ever since I finished it two days ago. Wasn’t terrible, but I think it has a lot of room to grow

loved how the worst thing about this series is books it was based off of. totally agree. me being 20 and loving the vibe, I made same mistake as you did and read the books so now I for pretty random reason can name the worst reads of my life being the whole series of the summer I turned pretty. That was actually before I realized this type of ‘literature’ was its own genre.
Loved your video & totally agree about Conrad being the only detailed character and Belly being of not annoying just boring and underdeveloped.
But I guess they were onto smt cause with example of never have I ever Netflix series, sometimes they make making character pretty concrete and solid and unbearable so you can’t watch the series at all if you don’t vibe with them. So maybe Belly being this blunt is not that bad.

I think Cam Cameron’s narrative purpose was to show that Belly moving on from Conrad got under Conrad’s skin and to provide fuel for Belly to convince herself she’s over Conrad (even though she isn’t). Ex, him “casually” suggesting the boys go to the drive in and then Belly gets to call him out for reminding her that he existed and therefore indirectly challenging him on his feelings for her and giving her a reason to be mad at him.

PS- would love your take on season two simply for that chaotic car ride alone 😂
