    I'm so glad you brought up loneliness + mental health as factors and explained how you can feel lonely even if you are not traveling. There are tons of reasons why people fail at things but we all need to evaluate how to adjust ourselves and the way we handle challenges in order to reach our goals!

    I was worried about the potential loneliness aspect at first, but there are apps now specifically to connect nomads in the same area with each other, which is rad! I also use WWOOF, Workaway, and Couchsurfing all together, so I'm around people. I've found that for me, feeling lonely is rectifiable by choosing to reach out and establish candid, deep, real connections with whoever is around you! I feel less lonely simply by having an exciting conversation about Stephen King's books with a guy on the bus, or striking up a deep conversation about nature vs nurture and our childhoods with someone I've just met; radical vulnerability is the name of the game, to feel connected to humanity and not alone!

    I'll be honest, although this vid was posted 4 years ago - first off, freelancing for clients has become quite a competitive especially post 2020. Coz every other person is offering freelancing services to clients. I see 17 year old kids offering Copywriting for dirt cheap rates and clients are hiring them. Also with AI in the picture, things have become even more difficult for freelance service providers. And this is definitely impacting people who once dreamt of living a "digital nomad" life.

    Hey Kristin, I just want to say it's cool how you've been a nomad for so long. I think a lot of people view traveling the world as something you go and do for a year or two, then settle down with a life in one place. While that may work for some people, I tried that, and I just felt so restless after being back in one city. So boring! I have been saving and building my business so I can go be a nomad again and do it long-term this time like yourself.

I'm learning spanish and integrating myself into the society ....although panama is expensive the average Panamanian makes $575 a month ,the apartments are cheaper and bigger, if you know more about where to shop for food you can spend 75% less on food than you would in chicago and fort lauderdale. It really depends on your lifestyle. If you stay at bars every night, your cost of living will be certainly very high. I spend around 1,500 dollars a month, including my Spanish school tuitions. In most of the countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America, 1,500 dollars is enough for a solo traveler if you control your budget well.

    I have been a digital nomad for three years, and had a service business created that I digitized (went paperless) completely that I built for the previous eleven years, so I already had a client base to pull from. The main challenges that people need to overcome is learning languages because english is not spoken everywhere, and in many places in the world, it is disrespectful to speak in english outside of peoples native languages, and therefore, you will always be viewed as an outsider. Another challenge is working out how to send and receive mail, and payments, and a voice over IP calling system to use. There are many other things to know about this lifestyle, but these are the main things.

      Traveling doesn't have to be as expensive as it is often portrayed. When you travel long term, you are often living "like a local", and doing things cheaply. Though this isn't true everywhere, there are plenty of places you can go where you can live cheaper than you likely do now.
      Then the other factor is, of course, how reliable of an income stream you can generate while abroad. That depends greatly on each person's situation- but a growing number of jobs are going remote in 2020 / 2021. With several countries starting to offer remote work visas last year, you are now able to, really for the first time, work legally abroad. This combination means it will be easier to remotely work for a company in your home country and keep a reliable source of income while you travel.

    • @Paul-yk7ds
      @Paul-yk7ds 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, my living costs in America are around $2k/month, but there are places in SE Asia, South and Central America, and Eastern Europe that are much cheaper to live, potentially about half. Sure the flights cost money, but overall I expect my expenses to be lower as a nomad.

    • @vitaliys
      @vitaliys 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Paul-yk7ds , think, why are those places are much cheaper to live, there is a reason behind it, or multiple reasons. And at some point we all grow old, at least the lucky ones, and then we need to live off something

    • @Paul-yk7ds
      @Paul-yk7ds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main reason they are cheaper is because there are not many good-paying jobs there. But if you make money online, you don't have that problem. You can benefit from the low cost of living, while making a good income online. It's call geo-arbitrage, and it's a huge opportunity for the people who it's right for.

    • @vitaliys
      @vitaliys 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Paul-yk7ds , not many good paying jobs usually translates into low level services, poor infrastructure, crime etc etc. Let's put it that way - you would rather live in Switzerland than in Montenegro.

    Actually the part about humans being nomads for a millennia is not really comparable. Back then people were nomads out of necessity. Nomadic tribes would follow animals for food and usually your entire support system (I.e your family) would move with you. This stopped when humans discovered domestication of animals and agriculture.

    If this is a list of the four biggest reasons why most people fail in the digital nomad lifestyle, it was made from a very liberal, individualistic - and typically American - standpoint and this person missed the most important reason: social structure. The nomadic lifestyle itself is neither sustainable nor compatible with modern or traditional societies (with the exception of nomadic aboriginal tribes) on more than an anecdotal level. This is due at least to psychological, political, technological and sociological dynamics. Only a tiny minority of isolated individuals can ever choose and afford to live in such a way while the rest of the population has to actually run societies: manage hotels, fly planes, grow crops, etc and - let's be transparent here - make much less money than would be needed to become a digital nomad.
    This is a reality that "free" full-time travelers way too easily forget and/or omit to mention. Nomads are akin to explorers and, just like shamans or rulers, there can never be too many of them within any given social group. There's a competitive dynamic at play here, and for every single digital nomad that succeeds, many have to fail.
