Botters have long used external clients to develop ever more advanced cheats and exploits. Jagex has, since the inception of OSbuddy, wanted to remove 3rd party clients. If they can absorb runelite by providing a platform that offers the same tools as external clients but gives them the ability to police bad actors, of course they will do so. The question is whether or not they can make the official client good enough that players won't quit when they ban runelite. It may never happen, but it's likely their long-term goal.
if they only import the actual runelite and the plug ins it currently has, it will fail, there needs to be a way for players to write plug ins on the new platform, as its done on run elite now. if it just stays as it is now, Jagex is gonna lose a lot of players

An API is an Application Programming Interface. What this means is that if I develop a program (RuneLite), and I want to give you access to some features, I create an API (some template code with very specific features [functions]), so when you write your plugin, it has to use the template I wrote, in order to access the internal client functionality. I'd write something like: class PluginAPI { String get_player_name(); }; Then if you write a plugin, you'd only have access to the functionality inside of the PluginAPI above (get_player_name). It's basically a protocol that defines the communication between two applications (your plugin my client). Any applications that want to talk to yours, has to use the "API" you wrote.
Also Jagex stating that the official client is easier to bot, is partially false. ANY Java client can be used for bots. They're all the same and they don't have any different security. You can still bot in RuneLite just as easily as you can in the Legacy Java client. That's because Java itself is what enables "easy" botting. The only thing that makes botting harder, would be the C++ client. They'd have to get rid of ALL the Java clients.
@@brandont103 Thats prob what they will do. I do belive they will hire all the people or atleast most of the people from RuneLite to work for Jagex, if they want to and know how to code in C++ of course. Since RuneLite is the main client being used out of the external ones and in most peoples opinion the best one. If they can get the RuneLite team on the company along with a great functioning Jagex client thats on par with RuneLite or noticeable better. Then there will be no need for any external and they can therefore ban them outright. Getting rid of a lot of botting and making it way harder for botters to come back.
An API is a bunch of variables and commands you can use to access info or change data of the client. It also limits what you have access to from the client/server. So the API could allow you to get item info, but not change it visually in the game. The client also acts as a barrier between the plugin and the server with the API.
An API is a place where you can send a request and get a response. It allows you to use parts of the game in other applications like a dictionary. Typically sensitive information that could be used maliciously is not made available in the API (I develop API's at work)

For an API, think about the API as the waiter in a restaurant, its a means to get data from the kitchen to the table. Where you have two applications, such as the main game (OSRS) and a plugin (application). The waiter or API is essentially the bridge. By Jagex publishing their API, it means plugin developers have a paved road to get their applications (Plugins) into the game.

>gets a pretty good api explanation >"lets just keep watching the video" actual highlight of my day EDIT: quick explanation from me aswell For API you need endpoint(on jagex server), you send a HTTP request, which will usually contain info like nameless picked up a dragon dagger, the server will now process it(add to database or verify that nameless has +1 dragon dagger) and then send back confirmation that yes nameless indeed has another dragon dagger. It can be made way more complex like asking for hiscores, certain items by name/id, account info(not credentials) or whatnot. As you had a concern with maliciousness, then they can control what kind of info or how they send it back so most likely you cannot access this kind of info without certain API keys or endpoints that handle that sort of info. In short its just used for back- and frontend/client communication
An API is basically a network request to run code from another application. So Jagex wrote a bunch of code to provide features and data to the plugin creators.
I'm a full stack dev, the point of an API is so external devs can access your product, aka Runescape game, in a safe way. Because the calls are done on the backend it would make creating malicious code near impossible unless the person making the API endpoints is an idiot.
You hit the nail on the head. This was always the plan when they originally banned runelite and then turned around and threw it on their launcher. I hope this fixes a lot about game play, like fairness in PVP. the fact that with RL plugins, a PKer can materially change what they see on screen compared to another player is a fairness issue in terms of engaging on even playing field. Before you could legally swap build, with "no examine" and "custom menu swapper" I was able to make my interface only show "build" and "remove". Remove everything except those two, put myself in 1-button click mode. Not game breaking, but I could stack plugins and settings to go against an expressly writen example of disallowed plugin behavoir. Thats just a failure in the system, but bringing plugins into a place where jagex can better monitor them would be helpful in ensuring consistency in game play.
