    Hi chuck! Your videos are really a blessing to me as a newbie. I’m wondering if i can also create an outdoor garden of succulents just like yours given the weather/temperature we have here in Philippines. My greatest concern if ever is the rainy season here, is it ok for succulents to be drenched in water for a week. You know how long rain can pour here whenever we have the monsoon. Can you please give me your expert advise regarding this. Thank you!

      Hi Joanne. In wet climates, you will want to do a raised bed, with a bit of mounding, and very gritty soil. This will allow you to use gravity to help drain excess water and guide it away from the plants.
      I made a video about it before, you might want to check this out.

    Wait.. so is dormancy a must? Some says that they need it to complete their life cycle (whatever that is) and some say otherwise. Living in a tropical weather really make it hard to know if they entered dormancy or even if they ever experienced dormancy in their life. So thank you for your contents! Keep up the good work yeah!

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very intelligent question Jonathan! My opinion is that they do not NEED it since they can adapt to their new environment. Some people will call this "opportunistic growers". They take advantage of the favourable conditions and just keep on growing throughout the year.
      However in tropical climates or climates with no "true winter", they tend to not grow as large as in temperate climates. It's as if there's no incentive for them to grow really large anymore since they can grow anytime. I see the largeness of the leaves as a way for them to spread out further and cover more ground so they can catch more moisture (in the form of morning dew).
      Also as mentioned in the video, they flower after dormancy so your only hope of getting flowers is around or after summer when it gets hot enough to make them dormant.

    So where are you? Southern hemisphere.
    I get confused when people in the southern h. Say winter/summer. Because we have opposite seasons. Especially for the lithops life cycle.

    How should I treat Echeverias, Kalanchoes, Senecios and Graptopetalums in extreme heat? I can shade them pretty well if needed, but I always lose a lot of them in the summer (Phoenix area here, well into the triple digits for 3 months or more.)
    I've heard some people say they need to be watered more and other people say they should just be left alone in dormancy, but I don't wanna withhold water for 3 months straight. I also heard it said I should water them in the cool part of the day, but in the middle of summer there is no cool part of the day. Our low is usually around 90 F. Should I just bring the more tender ones inside for the summer?

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. If they're showing sunburns, you'll want to shade them. Otherwise there's not as much need for it.
      As for watering, they don't need more water. You may still give them some once in a while if they are starting to shrivel. Or you can just water them once a week anyway, as long as you know they the soil has completely dried out. In that kind of heat, the soil will dry out fast anyway.
      About watering, you don't really have to worry about the heat. I used to believe in the myth that watering during a hot day burns them but I have learned that it doesn't really matter. All you have to do is to make sure you're not watering with a really strong jet that you end up removing the farina on their leaves due to too much abrasiveness of the water pressure. What you'll want is a shower setting. I talked a bit about it in the previous episode about watering in ep-105. I prefer watering in the late afternoon when the sun is low mainly because I'm not an early riser, and by then the temps will be more comfortable for me to stay outdoors.
      Those who say to water it more frequently are probably doing it shallowly, or rather, not giving it enough water per watering. If that is the case, that's a terrible idea. I also went into detail about this in the watering video.
      In short, dormant plants need LESS water. Doesn't mean they don't need any at all :D

      @@Cerriscapades what about watering in heat dormancy? (read second part of question)

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe I answered both.
      But anyway to reiterate - they need LESS water, but not ZERO. If it rains once in a while, then you're good to not water anymore. If not just give them a good soak when the soil is too dry or if they are starting to shrivel.

      I think you mean rosettes, that is what the head of succulents is normally called, and cobwebs/spiders are good for plants because they eat the harmful insects.

    In my country succulent only grow in winter (only 3 months) in summer they die not matter what I do they always die so How to grow/save succulent in 48°C+ temp?

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you able to shade them? I usually put shade cloth on some of my plants in summer (especially the younger ones). We also sometimes get high 40s and low 50s in my area in summer.

    • @VikasBabu_vicky
      @VikasBabu_vicky 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cerriscapades yes I put them under green shade net but still they die. after 3 months of dry summer 48°C+ temp we get monsoon with 40°C+temp with very high humdity. If I manage to save few in summer they die in moonson reason due to rot.

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you know what % of UV protection your shade cloth provides? Chances are it's still letting too much through.
      As for humidity, are your plants in pots or in the ground? Is your soil well-draining? Is there enough airflow around the base of your plants? Does water stagnate around them? You might have to adjust things to ensure water flows away from the plants properly.

      @@Cerriscapades I use 75% uv green net. My all succulent is in pot yes i provide good air circulation to all my succulent with very good draining potting mix I manage to save only moonstone succulent last year but this year is bought so much succulent but I know they all gonna die. Here succulent is too expensive. Don't want to lose them again. All my cactus love our summer but succulent always die. Can i bring succulent inside and put them without any growing light? As they will be in dormancy and wouldn't need sunlight.?

    • @Cerriscapades

      You might want to use a clear polycarbonate roof on top of them then. You don't even have to setup a proper structure. You can just get the poly sheet set up on top. Maybe sitting on top of something. The goal of the sheet is to shield it from too much rain.
