50-60% relative humidity is quite high. For cactus aim for 40% and below. For true desert cacti, 20% would be ideal. Consider adding a small fan. It helps limit the impact of high humidity. Air circulation also plays an important role in nutrient uptake, especially calcium.

Oh, interesting bit about the calcium uptake!

I read that root mealies tend to travel up to the stems n up. I did hydrogen peroxide on mine and they did come back/multiplied so fast that I was unable to get rid of them fully. Absolutely terrified of root mealies now😵‍💫
Loving how your cacti cabinet is looking now😍

Diatomaceous earth around the roots is a saviour. I also sprinkle it on top of all my pots outside & indoor plants especially Hoya. By doing this I have had no pest problems this season (I live in New Zealand) last year was heartbreaking with mealys & spider mites. Give it a try - nothing to loose 👍

Love seeing more on the cactus. Your Cabinet turned out lovely. That shelf sure made a difference. Hope you got those Mealy bugs. They are awful to try and get rid of. Good Luck.

Diatomaceous earth around the roots or sprinkle on top of the potting mix 👍

18:05 you can also use the extra zeolite, vermiculite and perlite to stretch your pon if you need to get rid of it! ❤
32:12 it turned out amazing! The supplies are more hidden and the trays are necessary, imo, since the pots are so small. I do the same thing with mine because I’d be knocking them all over. lol

Hi Emma! Thank you for the video and for your hyrogenperoxide explanation! I wasn't quite sure how to use it beside the treatment of root rot

It's fun to see someone else with their cacti in a cabinet! Used an akerbar for mine over the winter (Safe from pets) and am hoping to upsize come next winter. Outside for the summer prickly friends!

Maybe I missed this on the last video, but did you try putting a root mealie in hydrogen peroxide to see what happens? I wouldn't think it would do much beyond cleaning the bugs (same as with fungus gnat larvae.) I wouldn't expect it to kill anything beyond fungus. I know we saw some floating bugs there at the end, but I'm wondering if that was due to the hydrogen peroxide specifically or whether it's them drowning in any liquid. I think an alcohol solution would kill them outright (all life stages.)

Do you also keep a water reservoir in your cacti semihydro or just watering them once a month?

Don’t know if you have Pure Crop One or if it’s even available in the EU. But, if it is, you should give it a try. It’s been a game changer for many with root mealies and also good for other pests, bacteria etc.

Hi Jessica. I have looked at this product. I also grow in semi Hydro and was wondering how you use it. Do you add it to your fertiliser?

It is added to your water. You can either water it in or do a soak :)

I'm confused. Did you say you wouldn't normally hydrogen peroxide if they were not in soil? Am I missing something? They look like they are all in soil.

    • @GoodGrowing

They’re all in semi hydro substrate which is non-organic so won’t have any microbiome within it

Why cactus need a cabinet? High humidity?

    • @beeng77
      @beeng77 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The light that Emma has in that cabinet is very strong which did not work well with her aroids & hoyas but the cacti succulent seems to love it. Plus I dont think her cabinet is weatherproofed as her house is already quite humid. I have the same light too and the aroids have to be quite far away for it to not burn the foliage

To buy that shelf with shipping to the U.K. is ridiculously expensive. A bit irresponsible to advertise & add a link below.

How is it irresponsible? You don't have to buy it. And for those of us in North America it is a good price. We appreciate it.
