    CORRECTION: As far as I can tell, the GHK nozzle is not drop-in compatible, as I originally believed. I have been experiencing a lot of trouble trying to fit it in, but there are several issues that are preventing this. If you have made this conversion, I'd love to hear how it was done!
    However, the hop up unit was fairly easy to install, and seems to be working adequately, so far.

      I've just brought a ghk hop unit as the golden eagle is terrible... it adjust itself after 5 shots and the accuracy is terrible, even on .30 bbs. I hope this ghk hop unit solves the issue. Could you send a link of the ghk hop unit if you have installed one? Cheers keep up the great video 👍

      @@lewispittaway1555 I'm going to go ahead and copy my answer to your questions here too, just in case anyone else is interested.
      "Yes, the GHK improved unit is one of the units I have tried. It worked fine, but I wasn't as impressed with it as I'd hoped. Also, while experimenting with the GHK nozzle, the bucking was destroyed. So, I've now installed the Maple Leaf unit, which feels much higher quality. However, it appears that the nozzle trials may have had a negative effect on the bolt carrier. So, I can't really test this one as of right now. I am still planning to continue working on this, but for now, I've decided to place this project on hold.
      For the plastic GHK hop up, all I had to do was file one of the tabs completely off, and narrow down the other one to make it fit in the notch."

    Interesting preview. I'm considering this and a Cyma AEG M4 for a "baby's first BB shooter".
    I'm pretty sure an AEG would be significantly more reliable at this sub-$200 mark, but the GBB manual of arms and handling being closer to a real rifle is appealing because I'd intend on it being more of a training aid than going to many fields.

      2018: JG valve knocker swapped to steel, no idea what brand is the replacement
      As of commenting 2 months ago, the gunsmith said it still runs great and he apparently helped converting 2 units. The only internals left stock is the firing pin. Receiver is also holding up very well despite being only polymer.

    Kinda leaning towards getting a cqbr model. I have a WA M4 I got from a friend some years ago that doesn't like to shoot lower fps lol but the build came with a stack of mags. So I figure at least it won't be hard to get mags. But damn is it tempting to just save up and pay the upper end price for a TM mws

    • @thatgbbguy
      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that's a tough decision. I'm more of a GHK user, so the WA system is right up my alley. I prefer the slightly more realistic internals. But if performance is your priority, the TM might be the better choice. Good luck, whatever you decide 😀.

  • @darkshock42mlg05
    @darkshock42mlg05 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The ultimate test is can it use red gas all year for the recoil. Of course you at least want to use heavy gas which is meant for gbbr's but can be used reinforced pistols like your upgraded tm hicapa. I don't expect the stock nozzle to take it. I meant you spent about $500 on it

    • @thatgbbguy
      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the internals probably couldn't stand it. I mean, the hammer and knocker are just pot metal. I expect those to break relatively quickly. I feel that with this gun, it is definitely more of a question of when, rather than if something breaks.

  • @TierNoneOperator
    @TierNoneOperator ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just bought one. I plan on running red gas and rolling through some rough and cold environments. I'll drive it hard and put it away wet to really test it out. I figure if it can stand up to that abuse then it's GtG.

    Great review, would this unit make a good practice rifle for supplemental training for a real rifle , would it hold up?

    • @thatgbbguy
      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suppose that it depends on what you plan to use this training aid for. This replica does not feel like a real gun. It feels like a toy. The weight and materials really detract from it. However, if that doesn't bother you, it might not be too bad. I just wouldn't be too hard on the gun, as I expect the lower quality components will be easy to break.
      If the feel matters and money is no object, I would go for a GHK or VFC. They feel much more like the real thing, and will probably be able to take much more abuse. Although, those will run you quite a bit more.

    another 150 +/- for upgrading it doesnt sound crazy people pay a lot for vfc, gbb and aeg, spend twice that price upgrading it and never get something really worth that money

    • @thatgbbguy
      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      True, I don't think that price sounds too bad. However, I would have liked the price to be as low as possible, since a lot of people are hesitant to spend so much on a gbbr, without knowing that they'll like it, for sure.

Airsoft guns are not the same thing as real guns. They do not function the same, and they do not serve the same purpose.

      Is there a specific part that you were wondering about?
      I know that the hop up and nozzle are definitely western arms spec, as I disassembled the gun to check them.
      However, I will admit, I was wrong about a couple things:
      1. The orange nozzles are actually the new ones. I had assumed that they were the old ones, due to the old hop unit being in this gun.
      2. From what I'm understanding, they all come with WA nozzles. It's just that the new ones come with a clone of the new GHK hop unit. So, I'm not really sure where I got the idea that the two were not compatible.

      @@thatgbbguy Oh okay I see, and yes I would greatly appreciate an invite link! I’ve seen the orange nozzle on many videos of these m4 gbbrs sold by matrix. I have an older one with a black nozzle and I figured that the orange ones were new upgraded nozzles. You made a statement in the video that I never had heard and I was interested about learning more as being able to upgrade to GHK parts would’ve have been great but I guess that option is out the window haha. WA parts seem like they’re getting more scarce by the day and GHK parts are higher quality in most cases. But I’ve seen on Reddit that one can swap out the barrel and bolt assembly with GHK parts but that would require a lot of work and some decent funds to source all those expensive GHK parts.

      @@thegoodnewsguy1315 Here is the link: discord.gg/heavyrecoilclub.
      You can switch to a GHK nozzle, which is what I'm going to do at some point. However, you will need to make some modifications to the nozzle lock. I believe that the user "CoolDown" shared how to modify the lock to fit a GHK nozzle. A quick search in the wa-systems channel should bring that up.
      I'm going to try installing a GHK hop and nozzle later this summer, so I'll probably make that into a video.
      And yeah, the bolt carrier is too long to fit in the WA receiver. But it can apparently be filed down to fit. I haven't done my research into that route myself, though.

    • @thatgbbguy
      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically yes. However, there are two slight changes that I am aware of. 1. The shape of the gas router is slightly different. So, if you are going to use GHK mags, I'd probably go with a GHK nozzle to maximize the gas seal. 2. The valve knocker is slightly longer on the GE. I don't know what all issues that could create, since it would push the valve farther in than intended. However, the main concern I have is with safety. If you insert a GHK mag with the hammer down, the valve knocker is long enough to release gas and fire the gun.
      I'm actually working on making both of these upgrades today, in addition to installing a new hop unit. I'm pretty excited to see how it turns out.

      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minisutart4570 Yes, I've installed the nozzle. However, there are some complications that I was not expecting. So, it will be a while before I determine what resolution I should go with. And, I plan to shoot at least a 1,000 rounds through it, to make sure that there is no abnormal wear.
      Specifically, there are 2 big issues that I had to resolve:
      1. The nozzle lock was too big, and had to be shaved down. I used a combination of files and Dremel for this.
      2. The GHK nozzle is shorter. Originally, I just used a screw driver to get the return spring through the hole, and lock it down. That part wasn't too bad. However, instead of the bolt carrier hitting the top of the nozzle, it hits the bottom. This is creating wear on the nozzle, which I fear will develop into a large issue if left unchecked.
      I saw a user who mentioned cutting a slot to allow the nozzle to move further back into the bolt carrier, but that would probably affect range and accuracy, since it wouldn't go as far into the hop unit.
      TLDR I have tried installing it, I've come across a few issues. I will publish a video walking through my changes, but it may be a few weeks before that. I want to make sure that my modifications work and won't cause damage within 1,000 rounds.

      Hello! I have a disassembly video for the GHK m4, which is a clone of the Western Arms system. I believe that should be able to guide you through to the hop up.
      Of course, as it is a clone there will be a few differences, but they should be minimal. I'll try to cover the two main differences that I can remember.
      1. If you have the plastic version, the silver gas tube cannot be pushed into the receiver. So, you will unfortunately have to loosen the front sight. This is relatively simple, with just a few pins and a grub screw. Then, just push it away from the receiver until there is enough space to pull out the gas tube
      2. When you remove the hop up unit from the body, there is a small spring on top. Just be careful not to lose that, as it likes to pop out.
      Hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away! 🙂

I may do it anyway, as I really don't see the GHK nozzle working very well in the GE BCG, due to multiple factors.

      It would depend on the hand guard. You shouldn't need to change anything beyond what comes with the handguard. Although, I do not know if it is compatible with RS handguards out of the box though, unfortunately.
      Also, I'd probably lean towards getting handguards designed for the GHK/WA/VFC platforms. AEG handguards are usually dimensionally different, but can sometimes be modified to fit.

    I have the emg mk18, I believe its pretty much the same, WA system. Is it possible to switch to a ghk hopup and barrel if I use the WA nozzle? I also just bought the Golden eagle aeg hop chamber that allows it to take aeg barrels in the gbbr. Would this be an improvement over the WA hop up if it is inherently flawed like you say?

    • @thatgbbguy

      To my knowledge, it can take GHK hopups. I plan to try installing one in the next few months. I'll let you know when I do. From what I've been told online, you do need a GHK nozzle. But, I'll also confirm that when I upgrade the hopup.
      As for the golden eagle hopup, their new ones supposedly have a clone of the new GHK hopup. So I'm assuming that this is what you're talking about. And, in that case it should be pretty good.

    • @thatgbbguy
      @thatgbbguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not. However, I just installed one of the "improved" GHK hop ups, and it worked with some minor modifications. I'm currently working on a video about it, but I've run into some complications with the GHK nozzle, that I'm currently testing. But that video should come out in a few weeks. It just depends on how well my testing does.
      Now, about how effective the upgrade would be, depends on which hop up your specific replica has. I was extremely unlucky, that I received one with a WA hop unit. Those were replaced with a better unit later, but there is a little old stock around.

      @@minisutart4570 Yes, as far as I can tell, the hop up unit is compatible with both nozzles. As of right now, I do not necessarily recommend the "improved" GHK hop up unit, as it appears to have trouble lifting even .25g BBs. I will probably try installing a Maple Leaf VSR bucking at some point. I have a TNT hop up in my GHK m4, which I've been pretty happy with. I would try that in the GE, except that you have to make permanent modifications to the hop up unit itself.
      Accuracy wise, I am pretty happy. I installed a ML crazy jet barrel, and was able to get pretty good results with both nozzles (excluding the lift issue) at 60m. Although, I have yet to actually do a proper test. It has been rain and wind here for days.
      One last thing I want to mention, and your mileage may vary. I found that the metal feed lips on my GE magazine would tear up the BBs and fill the barrel with white powder. Which, would ruin the accuracy after a few rounds. To be clear, the accuracy was good up to that point. So, I guess that's something to consider. Maybe since I got a worse hop up, I also got a worse magazine? No idea.

If I remember correctly, that's all that's needed. I've actually been wondering about that GHK hopup chamber myself. I have no idea at this point. If you try it, let me know.
      There have been a lot of complications with the GHK nozzle, so I'll probably stick with the GE one until I've been able to do some long-term testing.

      Firstly, I don't have any WA mags (nor do I have the interest in buying any), so I couldn't compare them anyway.

      My original research implied that it was as easy as minor modifications to the bolt carrier, and replacing the nozzle. After trying that, it doesn't look like it'll be that simple.
      Besides, GHK (and VFC) are clones of the WA system. So they are very similar, and direct competitors. And yes, I know there are differences between the brands.
