- The third race of the day at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix was for the stunning, cigar-shaped F1 cars that competed in the early 1960s. Featuring machines from Lotus, BRM, Ferrari, Cooper and more, it came down to a stunning battle at the front between Ferrari's V12 1512 and Jim Clark's own Lotus 25.

These vehicles are an appropriate size for the Monte Carlo circuit. F1 vehicles today are trucks by comparison and need to be reduced in size.
These were cars.
Now are non-flying planes.
aint that the truth! its pretty ridiculous to say that a current F1 car is marginally wider and longer than a Land Rover Defender 110, a 5 door offroader....
Unfortunately impossible at the current speeds unless we want to sacrifice drivers for entertainment value again 😬
Maybe in the future we'll discover lighter stronger composites allowing the car to be made smaller without comprising it's safety.
What do you suggest? Be removed? Remodel?
and still, how many overtakes have we seen this race?
Now this is the F1 racing that I love at Manoco.
Those early 60's F1 cars showing the current F1 battleships how it's done. Great racing. Well done!
The hms "bull" the uss "andretixton" the Italian destroyer"we are checking"
And the german battleship "mikeyno"
Are all great names for those boats
Id rather watch the monaco gp if it was run in these smaller cars every year rather than the current f1 cars. The 80s cars would be perfect. The racing would he awesome in those little go karts.
Just about all of them better than today’s NASCAR.
🚗😐
Few things better than seeing these cars doing what they were designed to do instead of just sitting lifeless indoors somewhere.
It's gotta be an amazing sensation to driving cars this raw. Just a driver, 4 wheels and an engine.
Give me this anytime over modern F1 at Monaco
I would love to see current drivers’ lineup racing in those
Verstappen would still win by 25 seconds
Verstappen, Hamilton and Alonso half a minute ahead of everyone else, Leclerc in the wall on lap 2, the kids would money shift and blow up the engines.
@@masterkamen371 Stroll crashes multiple times at the hairpin like how he did last year, Verstappen wins by 30 seconds, and most importantly, 5 second penalty for Ocon.
GP Legends.
Loved that game!
@@prim4147- I personally still do! I run it in ‘65, ‘66, ‘67 and ‘68 mods. There’s also a 1955 mod I’d love to try!
Wish current f1 cars sounded as sweet as these. They dont have to be super loud to sound sweet
It's called "progress". The current engines are basically mom's car's engine, but built to such tolerances that they manage to produce 800-ish horsepower. This is the perfect engine for pairing with the electric machines that make up the hybrid drivetrain.
The small turbocharged V6 inherently sounds worse than the roaring V8s of the early 2010s and the smooth high pitched V10s of the 2000s.
However, they don't actually sound "bad". Listen to the AMG One, outside the context of F1 the V6 engine actually sounds amazing.
Great racing, thanks for sharing the video. One small gripe, it would be lovely to hear the cars a little louder.
Joe Colassaco put on a clinic in that race even if he didn't win! To think that those two cars were campaigned by John Surtees and Jim Clark, exceptionally important race cars being thrown around Monaco for all of us to enjoy. Very cool stuff
Real racing right here ❤
Well, we can put all 2024 cars in the trash and go with the old ones, they fit the track properly.
But... sAfEtY!!¡¡!!¡¡!!!¡
Brilliant memories, brilliant driving, no aero issues right up to the rear of the car in front and full face of Castrol R fumes.🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴
Thanks for this upload! 🙏🙏🙏
I enjoyed that more than the GP. Beautiful to watch
'This tight hairpin which for many years was called the Loewes'; Nah, that's Station Hairpin, and always will be.
True.
The "Ancienne Gare" corner.
this is so much better than the actual F1 race
Great to watch these F1 cars from the generation that I grew up!
No idea why they can't get rid of all the aero aids and mandate an oval section for the car bodies, let the tires be whatever they end up being and limit the size of the engines to keep the speeds down. This is much better to watch than the current crud.
its absurdly dangerous
This is more entertaining to watch than F1 Sim Racing.
I can’t get into it either. The games are fun to play, but even when F1 drivers were involved, I couldn’t get into watching others play video games, but I guess that’s just a generational thing.
Priceless cars , priceless racing
1:05 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣oh mate you killed me😂
I like how the joke is just met with silence too lmao "anyway"
Damn these cars look TINY compared to modern F1 cars
Oh…that Ferrari is just fantastic !
Some of the most dangerous but also some of the most beautiful F1 cars.
A lot better to watch than modern F1 at Monaco
Wow this is amazing to watch.
Look at how small the cars are. Way better for racing.
they should get the f1 drivers to race these cars here
Should you have any doubts, whether today's F1 cars are too big for the Monaco circuit, you need not look further than this video to see what racing this venue can accommodate.
I miss Lotus in F1, top flight racing in general really.
I feel like I am watching the movie Grand Prix.
What position did James garner come this time
*James Garner's Wife:* "Please stop asking me that question."
Well done Andy.....
What a hoot!
It was skilful driving being quick and not scratching the rare vintage car on the twisty, narrow circuit.
Max, Charles, and the rest should have to race 3 races in these machines just to mix it up and show us their true skill...
Oh man! I wish it was 100 laps
The lap down Lotus, #20. Robbed that Ferrari driver of a launch into the hairpin.
That was the closest got to the leading Lotus through there.
They should do this with F1 drivers, instead of sprints. A parallel, classic championship consisting of half a dozen races with those cars.
Más emocionante que los F1 de ahora
Funny that these F1 cars are like lawnmowers compared to modern ones....but they still are absolute legends and their drivers were all time greats.
This perfectly sums up one of the reasons why I’ve been such a strong advocate for bringing back in-race refuelling in F1.
I love Monaco, but will admit the races have become difficult to watch over the years, but the biggest reason for that is that the cars have become too big and bulky, and the sport has become more reliant on making tyres last longer than it has on outright racing.
By bringing back refuelling, you can afford to make tyres last longer so that drivers can race harder (making them less reliant on gimmicks like DRS for overtaking), encourage more creative strategies from the pit crews, and most importantly of all for circuits like Monaco, you can make the cars smaller.
These 60s cars were small enough that there are parts of this race where there were as many as 3 cars side by side on track. In Monaco. Imagine if modern F1 cars could do that here.
Wonderful to see these open wheelers racing again. I stopped watching F1 when they started putting wings on them and losing that lovely organic body shape.
Mr John Barrier 💀
It would have been better if they did the 1960s Monaco layout
Can F1 please replace their current format with this one? This is 10x better than the overweight, overcomplicated washing machines on the current calender!!
I have BEEN SAYING that if Monaco is going to stay on the calendar, it should be a half points race, with special cars that are much smaller just for this circuit. Allow the teams a budget for a smaller car, less power, more fun, everyone wins. What do I know though.
Hey wait a minute, where's Bandini?!!??
When Grand Prix cars were actually pretty, and a reasonable size. They didn't have to allow the dimensions to keep getting bigger, did they?
Lotus power 💪
I wish the commentators would just shut up and let us enjoy watching and listening these wonderful little machines race around the streets of Monaco. They might be 60 years old but they sound far better than their modern counterparts (the cars I mean, not the commentators...)
Are the commentators from the 60's aswell?
4k pleaase
Monaco, great racing, Best track! , plenty overtaking , never boring and .....................My bad *thought it was opposite day*
You just dont get it
@@DumpedClutch You are correct sir. I don't get it.
When F1 was interesting!
Wide road track
These cars are the reason why there's F1 racing in Monaco and they are proving why there shouldn't be F1 racing there anymore.
Only 50's kids will understand this
Why are these vintage racing and sports cars so much more exciting than contemporary racing? I could watch these gutsy races for days, never mind survive watching 15-20 minutes of todays seriously boring F1
James Garner!!
Ireland x
Can we have a commentator who doesn’t keep making wet mouth sounds constantly?
most insufferable commentators, wish they'd just hush and let us enjoy the sounds of the cars. can't watch a few minutes of each monaco run before the constant mistakes and awkward corrections make me wanna drive my head through an armco.
looks like the national championship of the UK/GB to me......exclusive british race here.....some folk with a few dollars to spend....
I say old bean, we don't spend dollars in the UK old chap, it's Great British Pounds! ;-)
One of the commentators keeps making a noise with his mouth every time he's about to speak... It's so off-putting!
Guys, I’m really starting to think Monaco’s a bit crap…
swarms of cars. No dumbass conga line
🏁🏁🏁🏁👏👏👏👏
gr
Monaco has run it's course as a racing circuit. Overtaking even in these smaller cars is unsafe. Monaco needs to be pensioned off.
so we can have more sterile and tilkefied tracks? no thanks. this is racing history.
@@EnfvntTerribleagreed, the modern desert based tracks are boring much like France Paul Ricard circuit IMO
@@TheKayliedGamerChannel-TH-cam totally agree man. I don't think decommissioning historical tracks will do anything to the sport other than hurt it. We need smaller cars...they're just ridiculously oversized now and in general make wheel to wheel racing dogshit on every circuit. The recent F2 race at monaco was incredible to watch as the smaller cars could easily sneak around corners 2 or even 3 wide. Cars are the issue, not the decades old tracks. Thanks for coming to my TED talk 😅
