  • Welcome to the 7th edition of Pondy Lit Fest! This year, we proudly focus on "Bharat in the New Age", guided by the inspirational phrase “Bharat Shakti” from the writings of Sri Aurobindo, whose sacred seat of sadhana resides in Pondicherry.
Our festival has always been a platform for empowering knowledge on spiritual, religious, and cultural subjects that showcase Bharat's true strength. We explore critical barriers through Lectures & Conversations, Book Talks, and presentations on Science, Technology, Defence & Security-avoiding the noise of polemics and debunked narratives.

A nice presentation by Tamil scholar Shri Jatayu ji. I was very happy and excited to hear the speaker reflecting the research of Dr. R. Ranganji, a renowned scholar and researcher of the Ramayana and Vedas. I have heard and read Dr. Ranganji saying many times that the Valmiki Ramayana is the closest to the Vedic samhita. Being a Vedic scholar himself and having written the commentary on the entire Vedic samhita, I think he is able to make that claim aptly. To understand the importance of Vedic samhita is like another scuba diving.
Way back during the pandemic lockdown, I had the opportunity to read in detail Dr. Ranganji's Ten volumed "The Ramayana of Valmiki". The first Six volumes had the original Sanskrit shlokas alongwith verse to verse English translation. The remaining Four was an extensive research of one of its kind. One of the innovation of that research work was to decipher the chronology of various versions of Ramayana and establish the authenticity of that of Valmiki. In the process, the author had showcased various stories in different regional versions of Ramayana including but not limited to the stories presented by the speaker here. The work had seemed to be exhaustive including various threats to Ramayana upto our times. Dr. Ranganji had concluded the chronology research saying "Thus the stream of Ramayana flows on and on up to our time" (Page 92, Volume VIII, The Ramayana of Valmiki, published by WEBOLIM-Dr. R. Rangan), the same way that the speaker ended this talk.
As rightly pointed out by the speaker, Dr. Ranganji's book "UttaraRamayana ?" is a very bold research again to classify the original from the later addition. An exclusive interview by @21Notes on this topic last year was very interesting too.
Again, I am happy that the speaker has presented this topic nicely.

Thank you @HarishChandar-ud4oh ji. Yes, Dr Rangan ji's interpretations and insights on Ramayana are absolutely brilliant. I have been very fortunate and blessed to read his Ramayana edition, listen to his talks and also interact with him closely.

From the very first time I heard Jataayu at PLF 2018 the most consistent émanation from his scholarship is his erudition and command over ideas and philosophy to nuance and reconcile and synthesise ideas.

narratives interpolated later by various authors etc. First watch fully with attention.

Lesson to be learned, originals are originals , should be studied first, rest can follow. We should immediately stop calling Ramayan ‘ mythology ‘ and introduce in the history curriculum in schools so that people take it as our history.

Everyone has a right to their views and versions. This is a great country with many traditions within Hinduism.

Narrow minded view. This country has not had a better translator of ancient poetry than AK Ramanujan. Pl appreciate the painstaking work he did. Read his Speaking of Siva.

I do not understand why Buddhism and Jainism ever came about in Bharat ? Did they find deficiencies in Hinduism ?
