For one entire year, I would pass the playhouse hosting this production on Broadway at 54th Street, I was a bartender at STUDIO 54. Because of my high-profile at StUDIO, the producers of EVITA with Patty Lupone would have given me front row seats any time I would have asked for, Not once, not one single time did I ever just walk into this theater and sit down and watch history in the making. I could kick myself in the butt, however, in my defense, at 54, I saw much history in the making. I still grieve my ignorance.
Used to go to Broadway shows all the time...(had the $$ then) saw the original "Jesus Christ Superstar" and was fortunate enough to see Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin in 1979... EXCELLENT... blew me out of the water! Phantom didn't suck either!!! (yup, the original with Michael Crawford)... MISS those days...
Too bad we miss after they're gone and can't go back to relive them, even in our dreams. Those good ole days only are missed by the old and lived by the young. Good or great times are better than trying to forget the bad ones.
Evita is a brilliant show not because it's 100% accurate (how could it be? history is NOT objective), but because it explores a compelling character, who happens to be historical. Maybe it varies show-to-show, but Evita isn't really evil, she's just too narcissistic to care whether her genuinely good objectives are done, and instead helped Peron's greed out of her self-delusions of sainthood.
Shows how much people rely on Tim Rice's slanted perception which he got from sexist and dated references. Eva Peron was outspoken and sincere in regards to her efforts for the poor, she fought for the rights of illegitimate children and publicly pushed for women's suffrage. Rice and others perhaps don't take into consideration what a woman working in the 30s and 40s had to go through to get anywhere.
This song is my favorite song in the entire play. I love the how fun it sounds. I also love how Ché mocks the entire situation and uses it to bash Eva and Perón. It's just a fun song

Evita, unlike many musical stories sans "Jesus Christ Superstar" does not loose its luster in the second act. Rice and Webber have a knack for keeping the momentum going and I love them for that. Speaking of JCS, the film version of that piece had the life sucked out of it by Ted Neeley who made an embarrassingly LONG career of playing Christ. Ian Gillian sang it WAY better in the concept album but, I digress. This is about Evita, another savior-esque icon in history. Have you read her books? Have you heard her speak? LuPone simply NAILS the 'character' of Evita vocally in this piece.
This song is just as good as the others. Wonderful story-- the musical starts and ends depressingly but thats okay. Our town theater is doing this show. Right now we're in rehearsal-- but having professionals joining us relatively soon, i think this show will be fantastic. THANK YOU ANDREW WEBBER.
I could never get over the English version compared to the American. Saw both shows and like better the original English version! Everyone not Argentine should refrain speaking about her. She was the result of a political/social scenario. Complex and really difficult to explain to people that didn't live through it. Now history pictures her as nothing short of a saint...

Eva died from a type of cancer, and her body disappeared for 17 years, because of Peron, when he was overthrown, he was afraid they would destroy Eva's body, so he fled to Italy with Eva's body. Pretty creepy huh?
Perón didn't take Eva's body with him. He left her behind, when he fled. It was the government that ousted him that eventually had her buried under an assumed name in Italy. In the early '70s, the Argentine government finally had Eva 's body disinterred and returned to Perón in Spain, where he was living in exile with his third wife, Isabel. The coffin was usually kept in an upstairs room, though visitors sometimes saw it on the dining room table. Perón's private secretary, José López Rega, an astrologist and spiritualist, encouraged Isabel to lie on the coffin to soak up Evita's 'magic vibrations' -- while López chanted incantations. (Now THAT is creepy!) But the magic proved non-transferrable. Though Isabel achieved Eva's dream of becoming Perón's Vice President, when he ran for a third term (and the first female president of any country in the world, after she succeeded Peron when he died shortly), her administration proved disastrous, and she was overthrown in a coup. There is only one Evita.
I had the pleasure to start in a lort to turn international touring company with Florence Lacy, Ms. LuPone's understudy. Began in wardrobe then joined the cast, chorus gratefully, earned Esquity and toured countries, villages, towns and cities l never knew existed or heard of such as Louvorno, Italy or Patua learning and seeing the differencia between Venice and Vienna, the Danube, Thimes and Thames.
The movie was just a dumb ad for Madona. It is a very moving experience to be sitting in the live audience and to witness for yourself everything from the gleam in the actors' eyes and the animated contractions of their facial muscles to the well choreographed movements as they convey with every bit of energy to reenact the tumultuous events of Evita's life
wolfie 81 movie musicals have the problem that they are seen as more realistic so having people sing and dance in a film feels unrealistic while on stage this isn't the case. Unless it's a cartoon.
Madonna was only the star of the movie. She had nothing else to do with it. Director Alan Parker only hired her on the condition that she not meddle, because Madonna has had a history of wanting her input in everything. Parker co-wrote the screenplay with Oliver Stone. Blame them. For the record, Madonna didn't make them give her "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," nor did she demand that they write "You Must Love Me" for her, either. Seriously, people, get your facts straight!
