    Jacques Marie Mage is sleeping on the Spectacle Factory. You’re legit the best in the game. They’re missing out on a huge opportunity.

    I’m a huge JMM fan. Have two pairs still not Rx’ed. all said… you’ve done a terrific take on this from product to storytelling. I’m contemplating sharing this on my Facebook page.
    Again… WELL DONE. (Damn… I love those frames… a barrel of legend and laughs!)

    I think JMM makes quality glasses and have their place in the market. However they have become over saturated and become a mass luxury product in its life cycle. First the frames are uncomfortable after long wear times. I went to the boutique multiple times to get them adjusted but never found a fit I like due the weight. Second the “limited” and numbered aspect of the brand is all marketing. They recycle the same frames and make a small tweak or change the lense color and announce it like it’s some new product. Lastly I think he’s priming the brand to be sold off to a big conglomerate which is why you see the rapid expansion of boutiques. We know how that story goes

    For an early thick quality frame, look at the 4th Oliver Peoples x TakahiromiyashitaTheSoloIst collab...2012, 2 years before JMM. Those are a particular favorite of mine.

    Not having your eyewear in the best opticians in the world is a shame for any brand.

    Legend has it, the only sculpture Michelangelo signed was the one he angrily signed when a passerby mistakenly attributed it to another Renaissance era artist.
    Much like Michelangelo and Renaissance, JMM is not doing anything that was not done before, but he has rebirthed something far forgotten, with his own unique fingerprint. And he’s well within his rights to be mad at hacks like T Henri.
    I have 10 pairs of Jacques Marie Mage glasses. 7 Acetate, 2 Titanium and 1 hybrid. Every single pair was bought because no one else made what I wanted. And I own several more pairs from brands Robert adores. None of the other “Chunky acetate” brands come close to how a JMM pair feels. Matsuda probably comes the closest, but the range of styles they have for thick cut acetate are very limited.
    JMM frames come with innovations as well. Their fully sealed and maintenance free hinge on the latest titanium frames is a marvel. And anecdotally, of the 30 odd pairs I have from pretty much every top brand in the world, the JMM pairs by far get the “I love your glasses” comment from laymen. With the exception of maybe a couple of Cartier frames.
    Lastly, regarding the politics, my local eyewear store, who stocks a large variety of independent brands (and where I go for my lenses) candidly told me JMM did not accept them as a dealer. But they had no hard feelings and gladly recommended me to go to the Authorized dealer in another city, whose owner is a personal friend of theirs by chance.
    I don’t particularly care much about cults or sheep mentality, I buy JMMS because they make a product I desire. End of.

    I am an avid JMM enthusiast (currently shopping for my 5th pair). But I have never really liked the man very much, I find him to be a little pretentious (which maybe he deserves for what he's done) but all that aside, I have tried many different products in the sector and find myself ALWAYS coming back to the JMM product. The quality, the packaging, and the limited edition nature of their releases does such a great job of dragging me back to the brand...and I aint even made xD

    I (used to) loveeeeee the JMM designs. They are beautiful glasses. And I was so happy when I got a pair for my own (all the way in Vietnam). And then found out that they are sooooooo uncomfortable for wearing. They are very heavy and uncomfortable. Which is very, very sad. Such a beautiful pair of sunglasses and now also my least worn pair. So yeh, I still think that JMM glasses are very good looking, but I will never have another pair.

      JMM “Marketeers”.
      Guy single handedly designs every single detail of every frame, down to the hinges. A contract manufacturer with skilled workers then make the frames.
      You’re asking for a Foxconn documentary because you like iPhones.

    I like videos on the brands and industry insights! I'm wondering why eyewear is mostly only designer brands that all manufacture from the same factory. Who is the third party factory in japan that makes for all these companies that are labeled as made in japan? Which companies are completely in-house like most watch companies are? I would love it if you do a video answering these questions! I personally think JMM make a lovely frame to admire and not so much wear, whereas masunaga makes frames that are much more wearable, incredibly beautiful, but its not immediately apparent its more something the wearer enjoys.

    • @leiyue812
      @leiyue812 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +4

      Masunaga manufactures a lot "made in Japan" luxury eyewear brands, including Dita, Chrome Hearts, etc.

    • @SgtKillmorez
      @SgtKillmorez 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      Thanks for sharing that! I think I'm going to buy masunaga directly then cause I like supporting the artisans at the source, even though im sure masunage make more revenue from having multiple third parties buy from them. I'm new to eyewear but it seems to me that nobody should be complaining about copying or imitating if they all just manufacture at the same place anyways. Just a lot of designers but not alot of brands willing to make a long term investment into their own production.

      @@SgtKillmorez True. Actually, all those high end eyewears are made in Sabae city in Japan, including JMM. I don't think there are much differences in terms of quality and craftmanship between those brands. You are paying for the design and brand name.

    • @SgtKillmorez
      @SgtKillmorez 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yea so true! I also imagine Japanese themselves would never make such crazy outlandish frames like JMM and T henri and maybe even Dita haha. They're too subtle and look for balance I'm guessing. I guess this way we get diversity in eyewear at least.

    I see many similarities between glasses and watches industries. The attitude is a major one, the Rolex CEO called other manufacturers pirates last year, so I see the parallels. What will say, unlike Patek’s CEO, this gentleman did not attack any customers or potential customers. His negative comments were directed towards other business entities. Which I don’t mind, Coke and Pepsi should hate each other, so I have less issue with the arrogance. It’s regrettable they won’t sell through you, you are clearly the kind of business that they should want selling their brand. Great video and I hope this leads to you getting this brand in your store!

    I love them, I think they are currently the hottest best designs along with Ahlem however (I I don't know if they would admit this) but I am sure they are influenced by old school brands known for their acetate models, François Pinton, cutler and Gross, Oliver goldsmith and in my opinion the gold standard Maison Bonnet, fair assumption?

    I had seen that interview a while back when I was looking to learn more about JMM eyewear. I agree with the take you had in response to some of the things that interview shows. Nothing against JMM himself, but he reminds me of how some musicians or other artists can maybe come off as a little "big-headed" vs being more humble to the success of their brand/craft/art. That is unfortunate that politics can get in the way of restricting which stores can sell them. After seeing so many of your videos, I just KNEW I wanted SF to do lenses for me. It would have been a much nicer experience if I could have bought them through you guys, knowing that I was going to get custom lens with your help, Robert. I also would have saved some money from having to ship them over 😉. That said, I'm looking forward to the day I receive back the Smoke Fade Molino frames you guys are doing for me, cheers!

    I think i know why they aren't taking new stockists Robert. They already have some out of London in the north and in Glasgow too but now their new Marylebone (Chiltern) boutique is opening this month (Feb 2025) shortly after opening a Milan boutique too. Their brand strategy is ramping up even more. A store presence like Rolex and Cartier means the brand will surge in popularity even moreso in the next years. Regular eyewear users and non enthusiasts will contemplate spending several hundred on frames for the first time

    There are plenty of brands that make good shit from japan. Sekka Kudo, Archibald London ( which is made in japan but rayban prices) , Dita, Barton Perreira and the list goes on. JMM is a great brand but its marketing is what holds them.

    Jacque Marie Mage are truly missing out not having you as a stockist. It’s frustrating when buying Jacque Marie Mage glasses and not having the option to get it in prescription because then I’m thinking why buy these if I’m not going to wear them. You create the most perfect prescription lenses and would add another level of uniqueness to these “limited” frames for the customer. Extremely short sighted by a brand that claims they are looking to the future. Hope they change their mind.

    I am a huge JMM fan and buyer. 3 Last frontier, 4 special collabs, 2 normal run of the mill pair(run of the mill sounds insane). But I just purchased master of craft 001 and I agree Robert. The quality there just blows my JMMs (non last frontiers) out of the water. I believe the last frontiers and the Master of craft are on equal levels. I’m very grateful to own both but there are others who do it just as good and I think for master of craft the enamel is so understated because that enamel is so crisp on titanium for me it’s a marvel of manufacturing how they were able to pull that off. I could go on about the details but really I hope he at least sees what they do and really lets that inspire him. Worst thing he can do is not push the boundaries. Talking to his employees though he seems very down to earth and likes to have moments of touching grass and sees how much effort goes into his eyewear. And I agree he may come of a bit egotistical in the video but the other side says he is so focused on his craft he wants to continue to push and elevate his craft. I don’t agree with their practices of keeping the spectacle factory out of the race. I’m sure your videos alone would push them into a further audience of people who are just discovering good eyewear. So with that I hope the reconsider having Y’all stock them.

    Have a few of theirs. Happy w/ all, but they’re definitely not revolutionary. JMM models even pay homage to designs of the past that are tweaked and refined ie (Dealan, Enzo, Felson, etc.), so i think he should get off his high horse and go easy on the “copying” claims, as his designs are “revived/re-imagined” ones, which is also a form of copying (with beautifying), isn’t it? . I’ve felt they’ve plateaued design wise as they simply release new colour ways, and their quality lately has dropped a tad ie imperfections such as oxidation here and there. Maybe it’s just me, but i felt so much arrogance from JJMM that i believe it already translates to complacency & lack of growth in his products.

    I literally held my breath when I saw you drop this video - watching you show snippets of the full-fledged arrogance emanating from him just made me cringe - even though I myself own a couple of the ´non-acetate´ models only because I like how unique they are, as was how the Flynn was perfectly made for you. 😉 I cannot really appreciate their chunky frames tbh. Bottom line is this.... ´Their loss and other potential optical brands gain´ (I am positively confident that Lucas de Stael is benefiting hugely from you featuring them 🤗) when you become an advocate and ambassador of theirs. JMM probably think that since they already have such a ´huge´ following... they don´t need more representation... this already speaks volumes of the foolhardiness and arrogance. To be honest, I am glad that you don´t stock JMM - Things do happen for a reason 😉

    JMM is nothing special, they were when he was ordering small batches and they were limited. I have a beautiful pair of eyeglasses from EO7 (Entourage of 7) made in Japan and after comparing them with JMM glasses I think that's the same factory, look them up, level of detail is absolutely TOP but price is about half of JMM (even 1/3 recently)... I don't like overpaying 2x for Young brand without in house production. (I used to work in eyewear industry and I know this and that haha) Cheers!

      To be fair, people like JMM typically do predict trends in a sense. The direction they take their designs usually sets the trend, and then the mainstream adopts it a few years later. Like Hedi Slimane with skinny jeans in the 2000s, or Demna with oversized silhouettes at Balenciaga in the mid-2010s. What starts as niche usually trickles down to the mainstream over time
