Yeah I agree with you on this point, the ASDA Just Essentials Hot Chocolate looks like it is just Cocoa Powder and Sugar with little or no Milk Powder added, which could explain things. As you say, make with milk and cook in the microwave.
Hi Gareth, I too prefer the Cadbury hot chocolate drink. How I make mine is first after measuring out the required amount in a mug, I then add just enough milk to mix the powder to a smooth but thickish consistency, then I add boiling water and stir in. It just seems to make the chocolate drink a bit creamier....that's just my preference anyway.
I’ve always preferred Cadburys Hot Chocolate until I tried Aldi Choceur Instant Hot Chocolate. It’s the best.. You should give it a try Gareth.. it really is spot on..👌😁
Asda cheap make would be better adding coffee mate which will make it more creamier ..Cadbury is Cadburys already added powdered milk that’s why it’s more tasty.I still think the cheap one will be ok with added powder creamy milk.nice video as always.never knock the cheap one as said adding coffee mate will be even nicer 👍🏻😊
Oh dear. Bought one of these yesterday, but not tried it yet. Mind you, the other Asda HC is quite nice & I use essence extracts, to flavour it. mint, orange, coconut or almond, for a bit of variety. Will have to try that with this one & see what it's like.
My favourite hot chocolate is Twinings. You make it with boiled milk, not water. It’s more expensive, but it’s the best hot chocolate I ever tasted. This video has inspired me to go and make myself a mig of it today 😊
The cadboury has milk powder as well as sugar added to coco powder, the powder itself is similar in taste to an actual chocolate bar, and the drink is far better made with boiled milk instead btw.
When making hot chocolate I add 1 cup milk and 1 of water in a pan add the required amount of powdered chocolate and heat through, stirring all the time. I use this method to make cocoa too. Delicious!
When I have brought a instant hot chocolate I have not enjoyed I add to a, Ovaltine or Horlicks to give a slight chocolate hint or used when cooking so I can reduce amount of actual chocolate. I agree with a lot if comments tho they say instant add water that is, OK at a, push but always better with milk was a simple way to get my daughter to take milk when younger as hated milk but loved magic bedtime drink aka hot milk drink lol
Gareth, have always put a Teaspoon of Coffee Mate (Aka Coffee Whitener) into any Drinking Chocolate. Seems to do the trick. Great Video, really proved a point. Cheers, thank you ! 👏👍😉
Best hot choc drink by far is Swedish brand O'Boy, available online from various places. Deffo one of those you get what you pay for items. Choc drinks taste much better made with all milk imho.
I concur with some recent remarks, and request a rematch made with hot milk. 🔥 the measuring out was hysterical, I'm sure I was not alone in shouting at the screen, "Noooo 32 not 34, nooo" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 great watch.
I don't really have instant hot chocolate since getting a Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser but I used to mix the instant hot chocolate with a bit of cold milk before pouring on the water and then a dash more milk to finish.
The Asda just essentials hot choc is one of my favourites, compares extremely well against Cadbury's. I make it in a mug with hot water and add a splash of cold whole milk and it's brill.
Hello Gareth, will you do a comparison on opening packing relating to food products, especially with those on "re-sealable " products. The pensioners , me included ,can find it difficult to open/re-seal sometimes.
your scale has a mini scales for measuring small amounts more accurately. It goes to 200g, the main one is up to 10kg. The software on these scales and take several seconds to register, which is why it was changing, and the 10kg one is just less sensitive. I would not presume the 2 glasses to be the same weight either, even though they look identical they are probably different by a few grams, I find that with ones I used before. The glass would have been too heavy for the 200g scale, so you would use a paper or plastic cup, or a plastic lid off something.
please can you tell me where i can buy a bloody ASDA ESSENTIALS xmas pudding they are like Hens teeth. been looking for weeks after the review. BTW love your reviews and honest option we use them alot as a family and choice on what we buy. You have never let us down mate cheers
Hehe ok it's just fun and comes down to personal taste. Scales and the weight bouncing around... Try some new batteries. That kind of fluctuation is usually due to unstable voltage... IE the batteries are old.
Hi Gareth, I just know by the look on your face that I would hate the Asda Essentials. I am not keen on Cadbury's either to be honest. To me it has a really weird slightly off milk taste. Great video! Think you need a new set of kitchen scales haha!
Hi I been watching your videos religiously every day for months now but didn't get around to subscribing but tonight I had to after watching the cocoa comparison ive not laughed so much in ages Thanks Andy R
Another fabulous comparison vlog. I wonder if you would consider doing a white bread comparison of asda essential and one of the brands (hovis or kingsmill). Xx
Hi Gareth a great review, i think when it comes to chocolate Cadbury's is always better I've never had chocolate that tastes better than Cadbury's and the asda one looked like water and to dark 🍻🙏
More pig's ears videos, please! It's your chuckling when it all goes wrong (not that it really did) that has me laughing everytime! I've not got Asda hear me but I've tried the Sainsbury's budget Hot Chocolate which is really good, and has a bit of a froth on top when you make it, although it seems to be off sale at the moment.
PMSL bro that was hilarious, Have to say I agree with Filet-O-Fish using hot milk in both is the Equalizer for them and then some sweetener. Keep em coming dodgy lad lol
Ya think showing the ingredients isn't that much of a deal but its probably the most important part of your videos. Ya think seeing only (Milk) the only allergen that its ok for most of us to have but a woman nearly died having milk in a meal a few weeks ago that she was told there wasn't any Milk in. Keep up the good work man. Good luck in your break in the booze. Ya will enjoy a few then at Christmas 🍻🎄
I fill a normal size mug with full fat milk to within 1/2 inch from the rim. Microwave for 70 seconds, remove, then stir in the recommended 3 teaspoons chocolate powder and microwave for about another minute (900watt) Stir some more. For those mentioning cocoa powder it's not. Cocoa powder is a lot stronger, darker and bitter. Drinking Chocolate is not the same thing.
There's no substitute for good quality Hot Chocolate, otherwise you'll be disappointed. I prefer the Dutch coco hot chocolate. It's so smooth and creamy. I have a box of choc orange flavour hot chocolate tubes. It's delicious too 🤤👍 Tip: When weighing powders in small amounts, use a light weight container or, a piece of paper or cling film. Makes weighing easier. Well Gareth, you have plenty of hot chocolate to keep you and family toastie warm when the those cold nights start to bite. Cheers 👍🤤😀
The budget drinking chocolates tend to be much heavier on the sweetness to offset the lack of anything chocolatey so I find that grating in some budget dark chocolate and using hot milk makes it a nicer drink.
When making the instant hot chocolate, I mix the powder and a little water to a smooth paste then add some frothed hot milk made in my coffee machine. I know...... it's not then instant but 30 seconds to zap the milk..... Anyway it's gorgeous whatever chocolate you use.
Goodreview Gareth I always buy aldis own drinking choclote that's really nice ,mix the just essentials with a drop of milk , and make it with really hot water from the kettle 😋
The weighing sequence was so funny Gazzer. But getting back to the hot chocolate? Asda has failed miserably here. I would gladly pay the extra for the Cadbury's any day 😊

With the sweetners that they add I find them too sweet. I prefer the tried and true traditional method if I want a good hot chocolate drink. Easy and quick if you heat the milk in the microwave.
One thing I noticed about essential range is there usually bland no flavouring, but it is what is basic essential if you need and can't afford you've no choice, I'm quite a simple guy so some of there stuff is fine for me.
Ha ha you with the scales.. You know the little pad on the right of your scales is a more accurate for small amount scale. Plus you could have just weighed it in the cups you are making the hot chocolate in. Im also guessing as a teaspoon is a measurement, approximately 3 heaped spoons per cup would have worked. Love the video mate. Keep up the great post's
Twinings Swiss hot chocolate (make with milk) is my favourite. Haven't tried the Lindt version yet. I'm guessing it's the coconut fat that makes the Essentials one weird... Lyons is the same. Having tried a few makes recently, Morrisons Savers is nicer than their standard range one, and Fry's is also pretty good for the price. Also, I use it to make milkshakes as it's half the price of Aldi's equivalent to Nesquik. Those weighing shenanigans, Gaz 😂😂🤔🙄😅
I found making the Asda hot chocolate with milk instead of water was so much better. The taste actually came out and it was a big improvement!
Yes I just went with the instructions which say water but good to know as I've got a whole bag to use up. Will try it 👍👍
well I like tea with chocolate so I put it in a cup of tea.lovely
Yeah I agree with you on this point, the ASDA Just Essentials Hot Chocolate looks like it is just Cocoa Powder and Sugar with little or no Milk Powder added, which could explain things. As you say, make with milk and cook in the microwave.
Did you use whole milk or semi skimmed ?
@@wolfman011000 whole for me when making hot chocolate:)
I'd go for Cadbury personally. The big 500g tub is £2 atm. The cheap one is ok for using in baking. either way though I'd also use hot milk not water.
I'm guessing that's Drinking Chocolate as opposed to instant
Always preferred making hot chocolate with coco powder and sugar. It’s a bit more fiddly making the past first but it tastes fabulous.
brilliant, informative, but also was pissing myself laughing when you said "oh no... ave med a right pigs ear ov it now". pure class
haha cheers Steve
Get some measuring spoons for this. I’m a mechanic by trade so having the right tools makes all the difference 👍. Fabulous content as ever 😀😀😀
Thanks for the tip! cheers pal
Did you have to reboil the kettle after the fun you had weighing the hot chocolate powder.
I did 😂😂👌
I'm in total agreement, you can't beat Cadbury's hot chocolate. Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜

Yes, I like it with milk and sugar. Cadbury is good 👍👍👍
For drinking the Cadbury
But for baking you can use the cheap one..

If I buy a hot chocolate mix I buy it to add to coffee in the winter. However you can stir it into oatmeal porridge as well.

I put in the powder, a little sugar and some milk and stir it all up. Only then do I put in the hot water.
