@@oceanwater1246 Yeah, some early jets do have downward ejection seat out of concern they will hit the tail. Modern jets have whats known as zero - zero ejection seat. B-52 lower deck crew still has the downward ejection seat until today because they seated below the pilot. CMIW though.

@@neomab3780 There were two kinds of reasons why f-104 crashed. In some units, they flew so little due to the lack of spare parts that pilots couldn't get used to control it and crashed. And in some other units they flew so much both pilots and parts failed to function. Anyway a freaking missile with a pilot.

The 104 DID go toe to toe with the F15... and actually held it's own.
A veteran aggessor pilot in a 104 embarassed the hell of some hot shot F15 pilots back when the 15 was first introduced.
Took them a few hops - but the 15 pilots figured out how to handle the 104, which they were using as a MIG21 stand in.
But it showed that the 104 in the right hands, could best even the most advanced fighters of the early 80s.

Short range, STOL high speed interceptors/strike fighters.
Unlike the F104, the SAAB planes didn't need meticulous cleaning of the runway and could get 10min refuel & rearm turnaround on public roads with conscript ground crews.
At the same time, The SAAB planes didn't even come close to the F-104s top speed or top altitude and did not have an in-flight refuelling probe.
Man if you didn't manage to butcher every single one of those designations. There's no AJ 35, no slash in any of the Viggen designations and not A or J 37, it's either JA or AJ 37. Neither were they built as interceptors or had that short of a range. AJ 37 was primarily built as an attacker and JA 37 as a fighter. J 35 was the last plane built specifically as an interceptor.

No its not. The german F-104G was immature with many technical problems. The variant was more complex than the american counterpart due to to specific german requirements. There were also a lot of design defects of the Starfighter itself and 27 planes crashed with 17 dead pilots. That was the reason it is called the widow maker. Also there was huge corruption scandal around the german defence minister and Lockheed.
Or call them flying coffin, like Turks did. Turkish version of F-104 had same issues
Turns out when you slap poorly trained conscript pilots into a plane that was designed for high speed, high altitude air superiority fights, then force it to be an all-weather strike fighter, you have a lot of problems. Who would've thought??
that's what happens when you take an airframe meant for one purpose (quick reaction interceptor) and try to make it do something on the opposite end of the envelope (low altitude strike).
Germany also tried to make an interceptor into a hunter-bomber. And overloaded the plane with computers etc.

When I was 8 years old my dad got a computer for his business, he bought US Navy Fighters, and US Marine Fighters for MS DOS. "CD:\ USNF" the Starfighter was INSTANTLY like "WTF?" and made the F-14 seem mega chonky and inferior compared to the F-104 in my child head, so when I saw Top Gun for the 1st time I was like "Meh, Where are the Foxbats and Starfighters?" It's probably one of the reasons I got interested in Skunkworks and other strange military projects over my life. Thanks for the vids bro, keep it up!!!!

I'm belgian. My Aunt, who is now around 70, used to date an US pilot who was based in Germany awaiting to be sent to VN. He flew F-104 & F-4. He went back to US, married there, and eventually became coast-guard instructor. My family kept in touch with him. When i was 16, we went to visit him. He lives in a house around a lake with coast-guard runway ending at the lake. Every aircraft taking off passes just above his house. I had the opportunity to visit the base, where he put me into an F-15 (grounded of course) then had me as passenger in aerobatic biplane (not with him beceause he eventually became deaf beceause of flying). Still one of the best experiences of my life. Anyways i don't even know why i say this, it just crossed my mind when Phly told about F-104 not being stuck in his mind.

I've got to try flying one of these. In 1969 my family moved to Arizona and our next door neighbor turned out to be the head of maintainence of the F104 simulators at Luke AFB. One Sunday when nobody was around he took us in to see the simulator facility and the equipment he helped keep running. Three was one simulator used for instrument flying conditions that was the cockpit of an F104 with a hooded canopy that didn't allow any light in except the instruments. He put my Dad in the seat, talked him through start up and take off. Then. They put my brother in the simulator and he played around a bit. Then I got a turn. I asked Sarge to show me how to land the plane, but he said that he could not because my brother used all the fuel and there was no airport where I was and I was running out of fuel. That pissed me off so I pulled back on the stick taking the plane into a steep climb. Once I hit its operational ceiling I nosed it over straight down at full throttle with afterburner on. I think the thing hit close to Mach 3 on the way down, and in real life and it shot into the ground like the world's fastest lawn dart. When I hit the ground all kinds of hell broke loose. A siren went off, there were red lights flashing all over and sirens went off. Sarge speedily shut everything down and packed us into his car so we could get out of there before Security came in. Now that there's War Thunder I have to do it all ver again!

I think it's only the G variant that carried them, and only for Germany and Italy. If you look closely at any pictures of "S" models carrying the chaff/flare dispensers, they're G models.

The F104 was called "la bara volante" (flying coffin) in Italy. But I think the problem was that F104 was a pure interceptor, and was probably used in other roles by Aeronautica Militare, roles who demanded bigger wings.

I'm honestly really enjoying the old WWII planes like the P-40, but I can't wait for air-to-air missiles and afterburners.
It didn't make much of a splash in the US Airforce's history, but it is quite infamous in Europe, especially in Germany.
In Germany it was called "The Coffin Nail" because it killed so many pilots.
It wasn't the fault of the aircraft, the German Luftwaffe just used it... well... not necessarily "wrongly", but not as intended.
It was a high altitude interceptor and the Germans pressed it into service as a "under the radar" attacker and flew it at tree top level.
It is interesting that that fact is reflected in the game, by it having a much bigger selection of ground attack loadouts in the German tech tree.
Many of my favorite aircraft were made by Lockheed: the P-38 Lightning, the SR-71 Blackbird, and this, the F-104
even the 104's designer, when he was asked about what he thought about modern planes, said that the starfighter would outrun all of them if you strap a new engine in the 104. he basically designed that thing like a missile with a dude strapped into it

The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information that the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa. And by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

the missile with a man in it, the German fighter and the plane that i like the most.
They will have to upgrade the EE Lightning if the F-104 is so rapid, in real world well documented side by side acceleration tests it monstered the F-104, the Lawn Dart only being its match in low level supersonic acceleration in horizontal flight, it was still left for dead in the climb behind the Lightning however. MiG-25 would be interesting in game, it would have to boom and zoom though as it had the turning circle of a small moon!

I can explain why the f-104c for the us tech tree doesn’t have as many weapons, it was considered to not be that great for its fighter bomber role, and it’s regular service with the usaf ended in 1969. The us national guard used them until 1975. I think it probably was the f-111 was introduced and the F-14 was being developed coupled with the fact that it really shouldn’t have been a bomber. Yes the f-104 saw combat in Vietnam but only till 1967. Other countries used them a lot, Germany used them until 1989 and Italy used theirs until 2004! The Starfighter could be an awesome plane if it were to have the same engine as the f-35.
My love for the Italian sppppppppppaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa is as long as this quarintine
