My basement flooded. The water level was so high it reached my oil furnace, and the water had an oil slick on top of it. Mold is growing everywhere no matter how hard we tried to keep it under control. My foundation is compromised in several places. Floors have cracked open. Water ran down beside our chimney (we think) and saturated the walls. I can't use my furnace to heat my home. FEMA finally came out a month later. He looked at nothing. They denied me any help. Before they will let me appeal it they are making me jump through hoops with my homeowners insurance with inspections and estimates, even though I showed them my policy that doesn't cover flooding or hurricanes. I am disabled with 2 heart conditions and an autoimmune disease. I am losing hope as well. But I am just one of thousands. Pray for us all.

i live in Burnsville. we were cut off completely. no utilities for weeks. couple places had starlink (musk provided some places with starlink.). After a few days supplies were brought in by helicopter. They cut rough roads in, passable with 4 wheelers at first. i am type 2 so i lived off pure canned chicken and tuna. Grandson type 1 was taken out to stay in town. at first there was food and water stations everywhere in schools and churches. that has mostly dried up now since the government took it. after a couple of weeks the road to town was open by car. but some are still stuck. bridges were all out. roads were washed away or caught in a landslide. lots of those. my utilities came back on last week, still goes off a lot. everything is just patched. first good snow will bring a lot of it down.
almost all the supply hubs were closed as were the shelters. Government took it over. There is almost no supplies in their center. people that were depending on shelters were back in cars, tents or travel trailers, then the government started taking their kids. kids were taken about 2 hrs away. parents with no cars are told to visit them once a week or lose custody. people were forced to sell land for pennies on dollar.
where is FEMA. good question. As Regan said, if someone shows up and says "we are here from the government and are here to help" be very afraid.
Operation Blessing's and Samaritan's Purse and many many more church groups and individuals came in and saved lives and helped in hundreds of ways.
It will be a long time before most of the people in this area recover. I had just paid off my new roof. now got holes. chimney damaged. house foundation broke and floor unlevel. Doors don't shut good. Son and his family back with us. his home he just bought, very badly damaged. car damaged. just went to work tonight at his new job 60 miles away because old job was destroyed. our other kids lost homes and jobs too.
AND I WAS LUCKY! Many have NO homes at all or they died. The government even took their land so they can't rebuild. Many are out of work, the business is gone.
Thank you to all the non profits, church groups and individuals that helped.

If you don’t have money to start demolishing and cleaning up as soon as you have access to property- you’ll probably lose your property. Anyone waiting for fema or insurance will have issues down the road.

There's gonna be more landslides. 10s of thousands of trees have been uprooted on the mountains sides. Those roots are what holds the dirt in place. It may not happen immediately, I am thinking the Spring thaw could do it, or heavy rain this winter. It has hardly rained since the hurricane, so we do not know whats going to happen. Hopefully my armchair quaterbacking is wrong.

It’s going to take years to get back - not to normal, a new normal. The destruction from both hurricanes was tremendous. It probably makes sense to stop talking about the fact that there is no potable drinking water. Every single foot of water supply pipe needs to be replaced and connected to a new water treatment plant and pumping system. Many or most of the volunteers just can’t grasp to level of effort it’s going to take. The volunteer work has been inspiring - the real work and hard decisions will continue to build. Some folks may face permanent displacement, a sad fact that seems more likely.

Rant incoming... My oldest daughter, her husband and their four children live in my stepmothers home. After my father and her got married she had had the house available so my daughters family moved in and basically just pays the mortgage and insurance.
During Hurricane Helene the entire first floor was flooded. FEMA came and looked at it but denied my daughter help because they don't own the home and denied my stepmom help fixing the home because it's not her primary residence. Here they are now two days before Thanksgiving, denied help to fix the home and have no opinions. 95% of the relief organizations are gone now. Sure they helped right after the storm (excuse my example) to stop the bleeding, load the patients on the stretcher, carry them off the mountain and take them by ambulance or some case's in helicopter to the ER... BUT NOW WHAT. Who does the operation, the post opp. care and physical therapy. The emergency calls are over and now people need help rebuilding. A lot of people don't know where to ask for help and how do you ask for help if your house just received severe (FEMA own classification) damaged when friends lost everything?? It's hard not to just give up.

These agency's including FEMA are in 6 states and dealing with 2 recent hurricanes. And our congress who is useless, just before the storms voted AGAINST funding these agency's. I don't think that they are forgotten any more than many tornado victims and towns are. There are just so much more of these storms lately. People are a little desensitized to the carnage because its so prevalent now. Social media is a two edged sword when it comes to exposure. People tune out after a while unfortunately. Historically the Appalachian area has always needed more help due to many factors but poverty is definitely in the mix. I hope everyone gets help the desperately need but depending on govt or fema is a bad plan. I've been thru catastrophic flooding myself and fema only does some things. Local agency's and groups fill the gap. This is normal. Good luck everyone
