    This was brilliant. I really love how you honor the traditional way of making violins, instead of just carving the whole thing from one chunk of wood. If I had more patience, this would make a great project.

  • @BobSeg
    @BobSeg  11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yes, basswood is easy to carve, and because it has such a fine grain, you can create a lot of detail. I've never seen basswood splinter.
    If you want to hollow out the entire underside of the front and back, it can be done with a gouge. You'll have to be careful, but it should work almost as well as finger planes. Just be sure the chisel is razor sharp and make very shallow cuts.

  • @BobSeg
    @BobSeg  11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I didn't actually hollow out the front and back as with a real violin. I used a small gouge (curved chisel) to thin out the underside of the f-hole area of the top so that it would appear to be the proper thickness when viewed from the outside, but that's all. If you watch the video again, you'll see me creating two fat, f-shaped hollows on the underside of the top.
    Thanks!

      Hi! I have an assignment at school and really want to get top marks at it. Our assignment is to make a very detailed miniature on an object. Since I love to play the violin, I would love to replicate it. So I really want to know on what kind of wood are you using and where u bought it ?,how to bend the ribs of the violin on a bending iron and how to make the arching on the top and bottom plates of the body of the violin.
      sorry for asking so many questions
      thanks

    The wood I use for all my carvings is basswood. It is fine-grained, easy to carve, and is available in any hobby or art supply store. If you don't mind trimming it to size, it can be purchased for much less at lumber yards. The tools I use you can see in my videos. Most of my carving is done with an X-Acto knife, and occasionally, chisels. I also use a Dremel tool (available at most hardware stores that sell power tools for around $60). The pieces are finished with sandpaper.
    Good luck!
