An extra dope final countdown reaction ⏱🚀! Yes, it's the MNF countdown song. Joey Tempest is the lead singer. The band's look is called "Glam Rock". The Final Countdown was released as the lead single from Europe's 1986 album: The Final Countdown. It was written by Joey Tempest. It was produced by Kevin Elson. The song reached #8 on the Hot 100, #10 on the Cash Box 100 and #18 on the Main Stream Rock chart. The song reached #1 in the UK, South Africa, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Spain, Austria, France, Sweden, Ireland and Switzerland. It sold over 8 million copies worldwide.
The music video was directed by Nick Morris and contains footage from two concerts the band did at Solnahallen in Solna, Sweden on May 26 and 27, 1986, as well as some extra footage filmed at the sound checks for those concerts. The group wanted to use a space shuttle in the music video to go along with the space travel theme of the song but it was too expensive.
The song was based on a keyboard riff Joey Tempest made in the early 1980s, with lyrics inspired by David Bowie's "Space Oddity". The song's lyric is both apocalyptic and optimistic, describing a trip into Space (heading for Venus) and leaving Earth behind. When we asked Europe lead singer Joey Tempest about it, he explained: "I had the demo without vocals, and I was singing it over and over again. The music was almost like a soundtrack to a movie, about leaving Earth, and that the Earth was spent. And one day, we'll probably have to leave this place. It was kind of a dream-like lyric, but that was the backdrop for it".
On VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders, Joey Tempest said: "It was quite a surprise that the song 'The Final Countdown' became such a big hit because it was written for the band, it was written for our concert, it was written to be the opening song in our concert. It was almost six-minutes long, it was never intended to be a short pop hit or anything, it was very much a surprise and its been used for all kinds of events, anything from Formula 1 to boxing. It's been used for a lot, sort of like an anthem. I know there's been some cover versions of it as well and I know when the Berlin Wall (fell), at the same time that all thing happened I know a lot of other people from that area saw the song as an anthem. I get a lot of letters about that. So its been interpreted in many ways".
The song has been used in the television shows including 📺: Monday Night Football, Dancing With The Stars, Arrested Development, Chuck, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superstore, Glee, the Grand Tour and Gotham. It also gets a mention in a 2015 episode of the animated show: Gravity Falls, when a character says, "It's the final countdown! Just like they always sung about!".
Movies to use the song include 📽: The Olympians (1987), Shiner (2000) The Kid & I (2005), The Rocker (2008), Yu-Gi-Oh! Bonds Beyond Time (2010), Pitch Perfect (2012), Chic (2015), Planet Single (2016), Lapland Odyssey 3 (2017), The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), The Lost City (2022), DC League Of Super-Pets (2022), Tetris (2023).
It is also featured in the video games 🎮: SingStar '80s (2007), Saints Row 2 (2008), NHL 11 (2010) and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015).
In 2015, Europe appeared in a commercial for Geico insurance, performing this song in an office break room while a worker waits for his burrito to microwave. The tagline: "If you're the band Europe, you love a final countdown, it's what you do. If you want to save 15% or more on car insurance, you switch to Geico".

    Europe Info 📰:
Europe is a Swedish Rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979, by lead vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson, and drummer Tony Reno. The band's musical influences include Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, UFO and Michael Schenker Group. The band obtained a major breakthrough in Sweden in 1982 by winning the televised competition "Rock-SM" (Swedish Rock Championships). It was the first time the competition was held, and Europe became a larger success than the competition itself. Europe rose to international fame in the 1980s with their 1986 album: The Final Countdown, and their international chart topping single of the same name. The single reached #8 on the Hot 100 in the US.
Since their formation, Europe has released eleven studio albums, three live albums, three compilations and twenty-four music videos. As of 2003, Europe has sold 10 million albums worldwide. The band has had two top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 album chart: The Final Countdown (1986) and Out Of This World (1988) and three top 30 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: "Carrie" (#3), "The Final Countdown" (#8) and "Rock The Night" (#30).
Not satisfied with the album's keyboard-dominated production nor the band's commercialized image, John Norum decided to leave Europe in November 1986 to pursue a solo career. "I didn't really like the direction the band was going in", John Norum said: "We became this teeny-bopper, bubblegum band and I hated that whole image, the spandex, poodle-rock type of thing. I was more into the heavier, guitar-oriented stuff and it seemed like the keyboards were taking over more and more, and we were becoming more commercial. So I decided to leave. I just wanted to move on and do something else". Kee Marcello replaced John Norum in the band.
After ten years of living, recording, and touring together, Europe decided to take a break at the end of the 1992 tour. Joey Tempest said: "I remember in the tour bus afterwards we were talking about where the whole thing was going and I think at the time the consensus of the band was we really felt ready for a break". "We felt that it was time to put some roots down and I was really into the idea of making my own solo album". In that time, Joey Tempest, John Norum and Kee Marcello released solo albums whilst the other members participated in several different projects and bands. In return, Europe was dropped from Epic Records.
The band reunited temporarily for a one-off performance in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999 and announced an official group reunion in 2003. Since then the band has released six albums: Start From The Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look At Eden (2009), Bag Of Bones (2012), War Of Kings (2015) and Walk The Earth (2017).
Europe gained new attention in the US after being featured in a GEICO cable television commercial campaign during 2015-2016.
Europe still performs their music live on stage in 2023 with a band lineup comprising of vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist John Levén, keyboardist Mic Michaeli and drummer Ian Haugland.
