This Collection is BETTER than Atari 50?

  • We know about the Atari 50 collection that came out a little over a year ago, but what about this one? This game, called Atari Flashback Classics, came out 3 years prior, and even has more games. Could this be the better option over Atari 50?

      @sloppynyuszi I am hoping for 2600 Miner 2049er Volume II. I think we could see Jaguar Bubsy and some ST titles from the MicroProse deal. I also hope Atari buys Battlezone back, and we get Battlezone arcade and maybe some ports.

      @@jeremiahthomas8140 Atari ST would be good. The 2600 was before my time in the sense that when it was relevant I didn’t like it, and didn’t get the appeal. I didn’t really like games until I was 10 and by then the Mega Drive was a thing.
      I got the Atari 50 for Jaguar love. Atari Kart, Tempest 2000 and Cybermorph are worth coming back to. The documentary was fun and made it the old titles I didn’t care give me more respect, but I only played them once.
      Would love some of the later Atari Arcade titles to be added like hard drivin’, Road Blaster, Primal Rage 1 and 2, Area 51 to be added, and honestly I would love to play Kasumi Ninja and checkered flag, just to hear more stories about it. Actually more video interviews about the Jaguar years would be nice.

    There are unresolved issues with emulation on the PS4 ports of Flashback. In Missile Command for the 2600, the missile trails don’t show up on the orange sky level. This was fixed for the Switch version. I have a video of the broken PS4 version on my channel.

  • @chrislaustin

    Both seem solid options depending on ones needs, as I have the Flashback and always found a solid offering for classic Atari games. I also like how the "50" version approaches the history of the company and its games, so I'll for sure grab that at some point as well.
    And on a side note, Major Havoc had a unique controller, as it was like a trackball, but only allowed for left to right movements, so more of a trackwheel(instead of the ball). So when jumping in the game that was how you moved left to right(not my a digital joystick), and it was analog same as a trackball. So when playing that game on modern devices, the jump is going to feel off as you don't have the proper controller the game was designed with. I actually never saw it on any other Atari games, so it may be one of a kind, as Atari were the masters of unique arcade controls.

      @@ianswift3521 I actually have the Vita version and it allows for analog stick controls, as well as touch screen. Not sure if any other options would be possible, as the Vita was mainly a handheld. That's going to be a HARD disagree for me. I like Atari 50 because I'm a younger player who's never had these consoles back when they were new. Atari was on their way out when I was still a toddler and wasn't a gamer yet. Things like the 5200, 7800, Lynx, and Jaguar are rare and expensive now due to being flops, so I would rather play a smaller, but more varied collection that doesn't require me to spend hundreds on those games AND consoles. And since I'm a younger gamer, the 1990s section is what I prefer anyway. I like games like Scrapyard Dog (both of them) that have definitive beginnings and endings and are more like the Nintendo games I grew up with.

    You forgot the elephant in the room which is online play. All of the app game collections have online play but is better on Nintendo because you could be in the waiting room for 150 different games versus the Xbox and Playstation where you could only be in the waiting room for 50 games at most and have to switch collections if you want to switch to a different discs.
    Also if you have an Xbox adaptive controller you can get real paddle controllers working with games that best use it. I don't think the Pro Controller is that good for paddle games because you have to fight centering resistance. Atari paddle games are one of those few games that really need paddle controllers and everything else is just cheap imitators. Luckily you can get them working with an Xbox adaptive controller and a controller to Nintendo switch

The thing with me is; that I don't really like Atari games as they are too outdate even for my retro tastes; which start at Sega Master System, NES and above. I like the Atari 50 better simply because of it's presntation and video content.

    Someone should do a licensed package across systems, it's just a shame great games like Intellivision Lock 'n Chase and Burgertime, let alone Alien vs Predator Arcade, have never seen home releases.
    Yeah there's a ton of licensing to negotiate, but as it is no one is making money off them anyways, so why NOT work out something that's reasonable and nets you a little extra revenue?
    What is it about companies choosing to price their IP into being shelved for eternity instead of putting them to work?

    • @purelogarithm
      @purelogarithm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Trust me the costs are really high. Not only do you have to work out licensing terms (which negotiations take time and money to instigate), but it's still expensive to license anything. Just because nobody is making money right now doesn't mean that it's cheap to do it - the reason nobody is making money is the licensing is cost prohibitive.

    • @docsavage4921
      @docsavage4921 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@purelogarithm *Sigh* A guy can dream.
      I wonder how they even set their rates?. I know if I had an IP that everyone was willing to pay for but that I set at a prohibitively high licensing fee, i'd at least be open to negotiating to the benefit of all parties, because the alternative is what they've been doing with those classic games: sitting on them.
      Where's the sense in that? How is demanding such a high rate that no one can do anything with your property a smart move?

    I have "Atari Vault" on Steam, which is the same collection as "Flashback Classics" but with some differences in the menus and stuff. It got delisted right before Atari 50 came out so it's not an option any more.
    I would say the contest between the two boils down to quality versus quantity. Yes, Flashback Classics/Vault has more games, but the exclusives are a lot less impressive compared to the exclusives Atari 50 has, with the most impressive ones being the Mattel games as compared to 50 having Lynx and Jaguar stuff. I also put a lot of stock in Atari 50's bonus content. It's like an interactive documentary, and I actually found the history stuff to be more fun than the games. A lot of games this old are going to have very niche appeal (how many people get really excited about being able to play games like Air-Sea Battle or Basic Math unless they grew up with them? Let's be honest, not a ton of people), but the history of Atari is well worth reading and watching, especially since it intertwines a lot with the birth of video gaming as a hobby.
    Just getting both collections is a reasonable enough solution, at least for now while both of them can be acquired inexpensively, but if you only want one, Atari 50 is definitely my choice. It's probably also worth noting that most of the games Atari 50 added in that free update had been on Flashback Classics, and they DID claim there would be more updates in the future. If there are, I'm willing to bet the Flashback Classics exclusives list will shrink further.
