- Best remembered as the leather-clad, black-gloved rocker who stared sullenly down Top Of The Pops cameras in the glam-rock early Seventies, Alvin Stardust had already enjoyed fame in the beat era a decade earlier as Shane Fenton. After his spell in the Seventies charts he was reborn yet again in the Eighties as a retro-pop balladeer, songs about Buddy Holly harking back to his youth. His half-century in the business has seen many changes and he has adapted to them far more effectively than most, so his story is a fascinating one. Alvin recounts it with a welcome humour - the ‘stick-on sideburns’ story is worth the price of admission alone!
One of the best English pop artist that I met in my 9 years as a rock journalist in London... After an interview I asked him to take some photos outside... It had started raining, but he walked right into Regents Park, dressed in leather without a hat... I had to follow him quickly with my camera open: Just wonderful down to earth, generous human being.
One Love, Armando Gallo
Such a thoroughly decent man ! as well as a good musician.
Wow! Feeling very lucky to stumble across this. I laughed and cried. Thanks.
I met Alvin after a small club gig in the early 2000's. He was chatty and not stand-offish at all. A gentleman and a gentle man. I had a selfie with him, probably before selfie's were popular and I treasure it today. RIP Alvin.
I really appreciated the interviewer letting Alvin give lengthy answers to questions rather than keep interrupting, which is what happens in most interviews you see. Great interview. RIP Alvin.
A great interview from a very humble man who achieved the dizzy heights of pop stardom in the 70's. A true performer, still going strong right up until his untimely death this year. Alvin's guitar will be worth a fortune now & a wonderful memento to leave his family.
I Played a week with Alvin (Bernard) When he was Shane Fenton at the Garrick Club, Leigh where I was in the resident band around 1970. Real nice guy and, at the time, married to Iris Caldwell, Rory Storm's sister, who was the inspiration for the Beatles 'I Saw Her Standing There.'. In those days he also did a comedy act with the Fentones. Good act but two years later he became Alvin Stardust.
I interviewed Alvin when I was 16 on a community radio station in 1996, great times! He said my headphones were bigger than me...! They were. We spent the whole day together talking music and general banter, fond memories of that.
remember Alvin Stardust's first appearance on Top of The Pops, caused a sensation, rightly so! Legend.
I worked for a utiity company & randomly received a call from Alvin in mid to late 80s.He was such a gentleman & was so lucky to have had that honour
A lovely man and the band as well, no egos, met them at Kings Lynn Corn Exchange, terrific live band, never forgot that night.
One of my fave singer/songwriters from the 70,s ,as a 8/9 year old a joy to listen too
What a lovely man. I could listen to his stories all day and night. I came across this by accident and remembered him as a kid, we used to take the piss out of him cause we were more into kids stuff stuff, probabily too young to get him, if I'm honest i thought it would be something to laugh at. This has totally changed my view of Alvin Stardust. Sad we never saw him more like this on TV before he passed.
Great interview. I was a Stardust fan back in the 70's. Listening to this goes to show what a pro he was.
Just found this interview.. fantastic to hear Alvin tell his own life story, and some truly amazing facts about how it all started as both personas! Remember hom being the first pop star I had ever seen live at the Central Hall Chatham, some time in the 70s.. Great guy, fantastic era of music 🎶
Now that's a great interview, Alvin's story is an amazing one, could make a great little movie or TV docu-drama. R.I.P Alvin.
A lovely man, God bless Alvin.
Great interview, you let Alvin do the talking rather than interrupt and ask silly questions .
Alvin Stardust is incredibly cool. What a simple, brilliant concept.
The great Shane Fenton, RIP.
No other american singer/band influenced the young british bands as much as Buddy Holly & The Crickets. They changed it all in the UK.
100 % Correct .
What a great storyteller and nice guy(not moody at all!).Good interviewer as well, just let him talk, but knew his subjects history.
Alvin has been very lucky but he makes the most of his lucky breaks because he is grateful for them and he is GOOD! God Bless Alvin Stardust - legend!

Brilliant - really great listen
Brilliant- could listen all night long. Great stories from a great Artist. There is a saying that applies specifically to the music business- 'cream always rises to the top', and in Alvins case, it is genuinely true, no matter who, the 'musical incarnation'. . Miss you mate. X.
Great interview. Really enjoyed this . RIP Shane Fenton.
What a brilliant interview. Well done young man ❤❤❤
What a nice geezer, sort of bloke i would love to have just sat in a pub and chatted to.
r.i.p Alvin , passed away today at home after a short illness. 23/10/2014
What a fantastic interview, I was enthralled. I looked at this whilst working on my Billy Fury Dance Show which is planned for the London stage at the Shaw Theatre in April 2016. Alvin wrote a tribute to Billy Fury which I am using in my flyer for the show. Michael Parkinson
Thank you great great interview rip Alvin,
Terrific Buddy Holly story. RIP, Mr.S.

What a lovely guy. A friend told me, about an interview with Alvin. When I was at school. I watched him on Top of the Pops and thought he was so cool I'm his leathers, I wanted to be him, and get gurls. The Buddy Holly story is amazing. Could you imagine if it was you?. So sad he passed. R IP brother.
Just a genuine nice guy, and in this guys case, its true, R I P Bernard Dury.
I have been trying to find some clips on TH-cam of his TV show from around 1989 on ITV. If someone could put some clips up or give a link to where I could find some old clips it would be very nostalgic for me. I remember it from my childhood.
great interview
Don't believe in RIP. He's not resting. He's gone. Thanks for the memories, Alvin...
That's a guitar made by Melodija Menges- circa 1955-a Yugoslavian make- good tone. You can buy one fairly cheaply on ebay.

Legend - Northerners are always so interesting to listen to. Class.
Mansfield? The North? North of London is all.
@@original.dwornboy far enough north to be acceptable in good company !
A nice talented guy.
The God of Glam. With only two or three smash Hits. I adored him as a kid. We'll meet again, Alvin!
When I learned about his life I got even deeper respect for this awesome musician.
He was so cool.
R.I.P
I've always wanted to play Terry Britten's guitar solo.
RIP Legend.
jackie lynton did the intro for Quo's 'Live' album in 1976 and also worked with Quo's road manager Bob Young/ Micky Moody etc. Diesel band
but he didnt sing My Coo Ca Choo did he, he mimed to Pete Shelley didnt he??
Pete wrote it, but this man sang it. Also the world is a lesser place without both of them.
@@bonesybeat1949 Nope, It is now well known that Peter Shelly sang the song, but Shane/Bernard mimed to it - and became Alvin. Peter sang it on the show Lift Off, but didn't much like performing,, though he later had a couple of hits as himself. They had very similar voices. On Jealous Mind, the two are mixed in together, and the growly Elvis bits are Peter and Alvin/Shane. Mary Wilde turned down the chance of becoming Alvin Stardust. Alvin probably got so used to saying he sang it, that he had to say it and then after decades believed it..
Alvin’s son is drum and bass artist Adam F
Boy, you get Mr. Bernard Jewry talkin' and that's it, pretty much, eh? Brilliant!
Ziggy.......'five years'....Interesting story though how his image materialised .
He'll always be Shane Fenton to me.
One cool guy
GOOD OLD MANSFIELD LAD RIP

such an interesting guy...i didnt think id find it interesting but...wow
If he was Welsh he would be Alvin coaldust
Bring out a dvd please Alvin is GOD
When was this interview?
Jon Bryan look at the title
He had a 2nd bite of the cherry
Where would he have been without Gene Vincent
So, whats the name of the guy being interviewed?
Bernard Jewry aka Shane Fenton aka Alvin Stardust.
Is the interviewer one of those robots??
He's better than most that get paid plenty to do it because he doesn't constantly interrupt. Breath of fresh air and without ego.
He's saying he sang on the first Alvin Stardust which contradicts what Pete Shelley said. Hmm?
One cool guy
