  • Update: Deadline to apply for winter storm assistance has been extended to May 20.
The Texas Department of Insurance spoke with FEMA about applying for disaster assistance. FEMA may cover damage, repairs, or other costs not covered by your insurance. FEMA doesn’t duplicate insurance benefits or cover insurance deductibles.
Can renters get help from FEMA?
Yes. FEMA rental assistance may be available if you need to rent a different place to live for a limited time while repairs are made to your rental home. Rental grants may be used for security deposits, rent and the cost of essential utilities, such as gas and water. FEMA can also help renters with replace or repair damaged personal property, such as furniture, appliances, clothing, textbooks or school supplies; replacement or repair of tools and other job-related equipment; vehicle repair; and medical/dental bills.
Who can apply for FEMA assistance?
If you had damage to your home, car, or property or other disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance, you may be eligible for FEMA assistance. Disaster assistance may include financial assistance for temporary lodging and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from a disaster. FEMA normally accepts applications for aid for 60 days after a declared disaster, but states may request an extension.
If you have insurance, you’ll need an insurer’s determination letter.
What is and isn’t covered by FEMA?
FEMA doesn’t cover insurance deductibles. But if you have damage that isn’t covered by your insurance or didn’t meet the deductible, FEMA may be able to help you with that. FEMA repairs homes back to being safe, secure, and functional. FEMA doesn’t put homes back the way they were. FEMA also doesn’t repair rental housing. For homeowners, FEMA only helps with primary residences.
