    This guy caused Y2K. That was an unexpected ending! Great video, it's still very informative even after 11 years!

    I watched all 4 videos. That is really neat. I really enjoy looking into the history of computers, it's absolutely stunning to see how computers have come along through the years. Thanks for sharing! BTW-- the geek girl is a cutie.

    Ahh.. Finally i understood how punch cards/paper tape programming was actually done from assembly language. Great video!

    Cheezy, but fun! I'm old enough that I actually lived through that era, though thankfully near the end of it when CRTs and hard drives and timeshare operating systems were becoming more widely used. My very first program, in 1977, was written on a Varian 620f, which had a hard drive, so all you needed to toggle in was the hard drive boot program, then run the editor on the TTY, enter the assembler mnemonics, save to disk, then run the assembler (debug, rinse, repeat), then run the resulting program. Hello world was very popular then too LOL! When I graduated to bigger systems, we got to punch our programs on 80 column cards, then transfer them to magnetic tape, then run the assembler, etc, etc, still outputting to TTY. A few years later, we were programming on PDP-11/44 running RSTS/E, with one computer (the size of a room!) supporting 20 programmers with a whopping 256K of RAM and a 480MB hard drive which I'm sure the whole system cost well over $100K (in 1985 dollars), but at least we got to use DEC VT102 (80x25 CRT) monitors... sweet! Ah, memories...

    I was a systems programmer at Eastman Kodak in Rochester NY in the early 70's and they had a bunch of PDP computers used for process control. There is an entire family of PDP machines and the later models had memory management, etc. We wrote our own O/S (rather than using RT-11) to control machinery used in the process of making film. The O/S was called The Kodak Park Executive. It was a great time to be involved in the industry. Lots of good memories about the machines and friends. Ben Price - San Antonio

      What? You did not use Bell Labs Unix?

    • @ve3cda
      @ve3cda 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeekBoy03: The decision on which O/S to use was made by senior management. The requirements for an O/S for process control is a stripped-down version of a regular O/S. I worked on PDP machines for a number of years in various settings and never used the Bell Labs Unix O/S. Can you tell us a bit about it, and where it was in use? Thanks - Ben Price - San Antonio

      The Unix operating system was originally written on a DEC PDP-6, then PDP-7, but was not called that at the time. It was in 1970 the name was changed to Unix, and started writing it on a PDP-11/20

    I was lucky. In college we had two PDP 11/05s, a PDP 11/20 and a PDP 11/40 for machine language and assembly class. At first we used the paper tape to write several programs on the PDP 11/05 then we actually got to boot RT11 off of an 8" floppy to do our last few programs. All were done using the switches and LA30s. Funny how we finally memorized the boot strap loader until the 8" floppies and boot ROMs were installed. I bought a PDP 11/23 (QBus) and want to get it running again. What fun!

    Cool, groovy and far-out man. This is better than a full DVD collection of The Partridge Family. I didn't know people walked around with mop heads on their heads in the 70's. I learn something new everyday.

    I surely miss my PDP 11/45 running RSTS/E. Great OS that allowed redirection, everything could be 'piped' into everything else.

    The inside of such computer has lots of cooling fans, which can get pretty dirty. So in manufacturing areas we had to do maintenance monthly, take it all apart and clean all circuit boards and cooling fans to avoid overheating. It was a real dirty job for a Rookie technician.

    This machine's at the low end. I used an Elliot 903 for a student project in the mid-70s, it was an obsolete minicomputer that was also driven from paper tape. The programming system was much more sophisticated, it included Fortran-2 and Algol compilers as well as the assembler. I think the more upscale PDP-11s like the PDP-11/34 were similar.

    just finished the whole thing. god damn how difficult mainframes were. I remember seeing a honeywell 24bit mainframe at my old job, still running, and they had a redundent mainframe to do the debugging. They also had tape card emulators for running some of their programs. Was really cool to see, too bad i wasnt allowed to bring a camera.

    I'm not sure what the song title is; our students produced the video and selected a song from DePauw's collection of music that we purchased licenses for. I'll check with the student to see if he remembers. Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Great series, I would have loved to have seen it go a bit more in depth and show using some of the other compilers like fortran for the pdp11. and perhaps show an actual operating system running with disks on the thing. Sorry about my post in part 1 I had no idea where this was going.

    • @GeekBoy03
      @GeekBoy03 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it´s not a series, but TH-cam at the time had very limited restrictions on the length of video which could be uploaded back in 2006. It is when Google took over, they started easing that back.

    Haha, question:
    Was there any LISPs for the PDP-11? I've heard that the PDP-10 is supposed to be the first "real" LISP machine so I'm just kinda curious :).

    @darijo203 Proven language? Sure it's still around because has evolved many times. It was never meant to be a commercial language and the two guys that created it only did so because they needed it to create Unix/Linux (I can never remember which, and haven't really used either OS's).

    Octal? Was hexadecimal too much?

    • @jazzlover10000
      @jazzlover10000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was octal base binary - could store useful binary numbers in 3 bits of data that were something like variables.

  • @kinglonewolf104
    @kinglonewolf104 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Who needs to store years as 4 digits anyway! BTW, why didn't anyone rewrite the year thing to use 2 bytes to store the number, and not the last 2 characters of the year? That would have been much better, and would have been good until the year 65536!
